Re: Skinny Bars

Really, handlebars don't work without anchor points, in most cases, this means your hands (stunts excepted)! So, if you ride in the drops all the time (like track racing), then you are riding the advertised width of the bar. However, if you change your hands to the tops, as often seen on the road, y...

John, someone with your speed should leave with the fast bunch - you might find getting out of Blayney a bit hectic otherwise. First splits start immediately after the neutral zone, and then most (racing, not sportif) bunches are picked apart on the hills.

I reckon riding to Blayney is the best. It's about 45km through the back roads, very lightly trafficked because they are either already controlled, or people are just staying away. Riding Japan

Tokyo rides - the Edogawa river (various rides) http://i.imgur.com/RiisY0Zl.jpg First ride out was a simple course to check the bikes mechanically, as well as make sure the various versions of open source maps (OSM/Open Street Maps) I'd downloaded would work. It was the first time I'd ridden in Japa...

Riding Japan

http://i.imgur.com/1nqxdp7l.jpg First, the basics. I finally committed to buying a bike bag before leaving. I went for the Packworks Pika, which is a softbag that does its best not to look like a bike bag. It is well padded, and simple to pack. The biggest advantage is that it only weighs about 4 k...

I'll be there, so will Bnej (Ben). Riding either the 205 or 255... Depending on how far the hotel is from Stromlo. Ben will probably ride the 165.

Re: Kurrajong Classic 2014

Compared to last year, the first descent was a cautious affair. I think we barely did over 55kph. The ascent was pretty slow, too, with no-one wanting to hit out too early. I did end up on the front with a guy from North Sydney. As he picked up speed, I suggested to him it might be a bit early for a...

Wheel / power meter advice please

The whole power meter market seems like it will explode with a variety of brands, options, and costs over the next 6 months — even PowerTap looks like it will introduce a non-hub based variation (pedal, crank or shoe). I'd say right now would be a bad time to buy, given what is on the horizon (well,...

DHBC Juniors Training, News and Statistics 27 August 2014

Hi All, We had a surprisingly dry track on Wednesday night, with 14 riders coming down to have a spin. After a slowish warm-up paceline that slowly grew as riders got themselves together and onto the track (40 minutes for some people!), we practiced starts with a timed half-lap sprint. After that we...

Re: Inaugural Rookwood Necropolis Crit - 14 Sept

Here's a suggestion for grades, just in case anyone is playing along at home, not quite the same speeds as some other crits (although similar to Southern Cross' club crits):
c25s - D grade
c28s - C grade
Middies - B grade
Fasties - A grade

But seeing as you asked for an opinion: raw is best, like my Merlin. Especially if you finish it with anodised Chris King components, unlike my Merlin.

Is there any way you can try out using electronic? Better to try before you buy.
Yes, have someone ride behind you going "whirrr", "bzZt", "whirrr" while they empty your bank account. Actually, that might be only Campy electronic.

Re: Electronic vs. Mechanical Shifting?

I did read somewhere that you can setup Di2 to automatically shift the front derailleur. The result is you can just use one shifter to go through all your gears. I have no idea what use this is, but it sounds clever. Look Mum, one hand!

Re: Electronic vs. Mechanical Shifting?

SRAM Red has been accused of being unreliable, but it is light (I only know this because it was a hot topic this last weekend).

Not having used electronic shifting, I'd say mechanical and Campagnolo, of course!

Electronic is fascinating, though...

Junior Road News, Events, Results and Race Reports

The Junior Tour of Tamworth was held this past weekend (July 26-27). Taku and Tom B represented DHBC in JM15 and JM17 respectively. Like last year , the Boltons and the Rogers travelled as a single, well-drilled unit, sharing driving, living quarters, colds, and home-brewed beer. This year however, ...
