At least there won't be any disqualifications for not holding their line....

Doesn't there have to be a crossover so they race the same distance?

It is, what distance?

Re: Awesome track pics

Posted: 27 May 2011, 10:21

That bike is Francesco Moser breaking the hour record in 1988, setting a distance of 50.644km (as stated in the picture, Mike).

Most people instantly recognise that the back wheel is huge, at a diameter of 1.03 metres, but look at the front wheel. It's actually bigger than a standard 700c track wheel too. Most people don't see that due to the massive size of the rear wheel.

Other cool features of the bike:

- Look at the seat tube, which is actually 2 seat tubes. It needed to be split to accomodate the massive rear wheel.
- Look at the short headtube, which allows room for the longer than standard front forks, as well as a low profile position.
- Moser rode a gear of 47 x 17, which the papers calculated to be about 100 inches after factoring the big wheel size.
- If you look carefully, you can see one of the first instances of a heart rate monitor mounted on a bike. it's the black square on top of the stem.
- Moser was 36 years old when he rode this bike, and broke his previous world record of 51.15 km.

Bigger picture here.
Also, good paper snippets here and here.

There is no crossover, so the guy at the top of the track travels further. I am guessing here, but I would think that the guy at the top of the track can go faster since he is subjected to lower centrifical forces, and therefore less likely to fly off the track. This should even out the odds.

If my guess is correct, then I would still choose to race on the lower track. If the rider on the high track tried to overtake you, you could speed up, and fly off the track into him. If you both fly off, then it's a no race and you don't lose. In my experience what is more likely to happen though, is that the outside car (or in this cas, the high bike) gets knocked off the track, and the impact tends to knock the inside car (low bike) back onto the track to enable him to keep going and win the race.

Also, Karzie, what's this: :{)

Is it a sad face, or a guy with a moustache and a happy face???

No, I'll be on my holiday before that. Time will seem to go very slowly soon, as I relinquish all my habits and routine and submerge into the eddies, currents and torrents of the chaotic life flow, never knowing what will be around the next corner or what the next hour will bring.

It's hard to believe that lauren Fignon lost the 1987 TDF by 8 seconds due to technological advances in aerodynamics when you see the sort of bike he tried to break the hour record on.

Pick the parts of this bike that haven't been banned by the UCI...

There's something very strange about that track, it doesn't appear to transition from the corner into the straight very well and seems to make it very difficult to stay low and ride a straight line. In the madison when they miss the change, the crash seems to start because they can't stay down the track then half riders crash because they keep rising up the track untill they hit the fence, unexpectantly. Then as the Australia comes around in the final sprint he flies up the track, same with CLara Sanchez in the sprint.

Remids me of Muswellbrook where when you come out of the corner and you hit the fence if you don't straighten your bike up well enough or are riding too big a gear.

I remember watching Kirichenko in that kilo. He started off powering out of the starting machine, but the handlebar only broke when he was sitting down in his "tuck" position, putting almost no weight on the bars. Kirichenko does not sit up from his tuck position, but instead brings the broken handlebar up to his face to inspect it. Then he gives a slight shrug of his shoulders, throws the broken bar piece down on the track, and powers on towards the finish, clutching the stem with his right hand. The whole time, he never comes out of his tuck position, and never slows down. From memory, he still finished 3rd in the World Championships behind an East German and Martin Vinnicombe.

He also won gold in the 1988 Olympics the year before.

No brakes on these bikes either, although to be fair, a tiny single pivot rear caliper will take a long time to slow you down from 220 km/h :!:

Haha. Sargeant Shultz riding a bike with no seat, motorpacing a 3 year old wearing a leather helmet and cycling clogs. But none of those things are the freakiest thing about the picture. I can't believe that kid is riding a proper "Stayer" bike, where the forks have been reversed, so that the bike remains stable, and countersteers at speeds in excess of 60 km/h!
