If you have a junior rider in the family who wants to race on the road you may want to know about the Junior Tours that happen around NSW each year. They start in a few months time and this is a good time to look at the calendar and see if they fit in with family plans. A good time to start taking juniors on the slowies ride to get some road kms too.

We only found out about the junior tours last year. We went to a few and had a great time and will be going again this year. They take place in some great NSW country towns and make use of quiet country roads with lovely scenery. There are div 1 and 2 races in each age group so that the first years and the less experienced riders can race at a suitable pace.

Looking at the Cycling NSW Calendar it looks like the Wagga Tour comes first on 26 and 27 April. This takes place on a series of looped country roads with a base in small town Wanterbadgery. Last year the format was a road race and crit on Saturday, followed by another road race and TT on Sunday. (The National Junior Tour also took place at Wanterbadgery last year.)

The Goulburn Tour is a month later, on 24 and 25 May. Donna travelled to that round last year and says the beautiful scenery, frosty mornings and friendly locals made it a country treat.

After that there are Canberra and Tamworth tours and possibly others. James Rogers and I went to the Tamworth Tour last year with the boys and are happy to pass on information about the pub you don't want to stay in.

Another thing to watch out for is the B2B - a good family bike ride / race outing as well as a great training experience for the kids. This year the school vacations won't allow the Cycling NSW junior training camp to come the week before so it will be interesting to see how this works. No doubt Colin will put up information about this when this becomes available but the date of the B2B is Sunday 6 April (preceded on 5 April by the NSW Hill Climb Champs - suitable for extreme masochists of all ages).

For information about this and other junior road racing opportunities do ask James or I down at the track or the Marrick Café after a Saturday or Sunday morning ride. (I also have some knowledge of the mountain bike racing events for kids around Sydney and happy to pass on to anyone interested.)

Very keen to get heads up on the Cycling NSW junior training camp once there is news of that.
