Dear all

This is the most popular and one of the most scenic road races of the year. Its only 1 hour 15 mins from Dulwich Hill and fills up quickly within about 10 days of sceduling. Already Eastern Suburbs are filling this race up.

James F will launch the Winter Program for the Road in the next few days, but as this race will literally 'sell out' in days, you gotta be quick. Great race for newbies with a race licence.

Here are the details

Start List

Entry Form

Last year's thread drumming up benefits of this race

Photos of our huge turnout (can we better this in 2009?)

Not sure why URLs are not highlighted. Very tired and must go to bed. Perhaps our webmaster can fix my erroneous ways.....

Day 2

31 entrants (3 Dulwich Hill) 119 positions left.

Nick, myself and Christian are registered.

Weiyun, would you like to do some sophisticated modelling to estimate how many days this race will be oversubscribed?

I just tried to enter but Cycling Australia still haven't sent me my new licence so I don't know what my number is!

What's the deal by the way? How many km etc? I have a faint recollection from talking to poeple who did it last year that it sounded really good.

92km. Got it now. Still can't enter though because of the no-idea-what-my-licence-no is issue. Will ring people and have stern words tomorrow.

5 minutes ha ha..... same as last year, when I came second in my handicap group.

Based on my lack of endurance form at the Blaney to Bathurst, its probably just as well.

These flu type bugs take about 3 - 4 days to get thru the system.

Hopefully I'll be better by Sunday, if the race was tomorrow I'd have to pull the pin.

Must admit I'm a little confused by the handicaps, last year I was second home in my handicap division and this year I'm on the same handicap

I'm expecting rain and wind, that way it can only be better. I'm going to two watter bottles, it is 90kms, and you don't want to run out of water. This has the potential to be a bit of a painful ride if the weather is against us.

The race was a lot of hard work. I was in the 19 minute bunch, Alex, Matt and James were 5 minutes behind me, Mike C was 5 minutes in front and Bill, Peter and Geoff were in the limit bunch.

The pace in my bunch started at around 38km/h with only about 6 of us doing the work and the rest of them just sitting on. The road surface varies from bad to very bad, with the occasional smooth spot. We managed to catch the bunch in front on the second lap and were caught by the bunch behind after about 50 or so kms. From then on I didn't have to do any work on the front as the bunch was quite large. Matt had some chain trouble and had pulled out of the race. James had some trouble with his seat post but managed to get back on. Mike was in this bunch somewhere as well.

It got interesting after we turned off for the final stretch back into Dapto. The road is quite narrow and everyone wanted to be near the front. Alex and I were in the thick of it for this part. It got a bit hairy with people being forced on to grass. I manged to finish in the top 20, I think. Alex wasn't that far behind me.

Not a bad effort for my first road race. I averaged 37.16km/h over the 88kms.

Matt didn't pull out of the race, but dropped his chain, and had to stop to put it back on.... race over.

I had to stop as there was no way i was going to ride 40km more with my saddle tilted upwards, after having done it for 25km already. Seatpost was most likely a bit damaged from previous week, and hitting a big enough bump caused it to slip. I stopped at Al's van grabbed an allen key and adjusted the saddle, then got riding and was on the next bunch, but it was pretty obvious they weren't going to catch up.

Race Report from Limit Bunch.

Bill, Peter O'S and myself and about 9 other Illawara guys.

Started off OK. Going reasonable but challenging pace. Wasn't quite warmed up. Bill drops off.

We did the the first of three circuits and still seemed a fair bit a head of next group as we passed them going back.

Up the ankle snapper. Big hard going up the ankle snapper, but I manage to keep at the rear over the hill. Peter O'S at this stage just loses touch.

Down to 7 riders and some headwind.

Down to 6 riders and the bunch don't work that well. Two or so of the guys keep surging when rolling off, pushing and splitting the bunch somewhat which was starting to waste me. Pity, because we were going a very fast pace and a bit more order would have gone a lot longer, with more of us.

Going down the ankle snapper at 70kms per hour with the ambo waiting down on the corner is always encouraging!!!

Coming round the circuit the second time we still seemed to be a long way ahead of the next group as we were going hard.

Up the ankle snapper it was hard work again for heavy dudes like me. Managed to just stay on the back.

Headwind was there, and only 6 of us.

Again, some of the bunch regularly push and wear out the rest (or me at least). Another hill before turning left through a town, and I'm off the back. 52km mark, no bunch behind in sight.

Finally, 5 to 10 mins later I'm swept up by not only the next group, but a merger of the next four groups. Maybe 70 riders and it was just a pleasure to sit in there at about 10kms per hour even faster. Met Mike, Alex, Michael and Christian as well.

Then they went hard down a valley road at about 65km per hour and that was it, and so too for Michael.

My original bunch was not far in front as I could see them at this stage, so probably the limit got caught at about 65kms.

Retiring to Alan's van, with a bad head cold, and anti-biotics, I started to really feel the effect.

Oh, well. Next year.

Was fun anyway.

Was it 65kph, didn't feel that fast.

OK, a race report from me....

I've been sick, spending all day Friday and most of Saturday in bed. Drove down and decided to ride, felt pretty ordinary on the warmup, took more sudafed on the start line.

The 5 minute group felt pretty slow, which was good cos otherwise I would of been dead.

Lap1
Got dropped by the group, but once I felt better, I rode back onto them and then I got dropped again, but the hill was coming up and I didn't seem to have any problem riding up it, so I pulled my bunch back in, going up the hill and caught them again, not far afterwards.

Lap2
Didn't get dropped on this lap, we had reduced limit to 2 1/2 minutes, then 2 minutes, but we were shedding riders and got down to 6 riders, including Frank Conceicao (Easts), A rider from a club, I'm not sure of and 3 Illarware riders. We knew that the 10min bunch behind us was going to catch so we eased up a little and waited for them to catch. They hit us hard, but we were ready and all 6 of us got on. Then I think the 15min bunch also caught?

Lap3
Not long after we turned, we merged with limit and then almost immediately another bunch caught from behind. While the pace was quick it was within what I'd normally be able to handle, but the bugs still had a hold on me and eventually I was dropped, at the end of a down hill. 3 cars overtook me, I found some composure and started to chase, I undertook the first car and moved towards the second car, I was thinking about catching the bunch on the big downhill, however I'd need to get past the 2 trailing cars, so I could get a clean run down the hill, did a bit of mental maths on effort and said "nah, time to quit" and pulled the pin.

Coming towards the school, I saw that Frank C had been dropped too, he was about 400 mtrs in front of me, if I could catch him, I could at least take 5th in my group (I got 2nd in my group last year), so I bump it up and catch him on the hill, I attack the easy part of the hill and pull a lead on him, but Frank's chasing me, so it becomes a time trail challenge. A couple of K's later Frank catches me, he's done a good job of pulling in that 50 odd metres, I didn't make it easy for him. However not long after he caught me, the scratch bunch catches us, I hit the shifter and go up to cogs, jump out of the saddle and bang, I'm on the back of scratch, Frank tries to but fails, that's the last I see of Frank.

I stay on the back of scratch for about 4k and eventually get spat, some limit riders suck my wheel for a couple of ks then another bunch comes along so I jump on the back of this bunch and cruise back to the finish.

While I don't know my time, its got to be a fair bit slower than last year and that was to be expected. Cardio was way down with my sickie, but strength was reasonable, I didn't have any problems going up that hill.

Should I have ridden... probably not. If the same circumstances occurred again, would I ride... probably.
