-Tempetation- 2010 Coastal is coming!!!!! Fixed Century***

by Simon Llewellyn
Well due to popular demand it is back & better than ever before!!!

The fixie century will return with a new flavour, new route and more suffering, sight seeing and lots of yummy food in 2010. This year it has been decided that getting lost in Campbeltown, making crazy crossings of highways and puncturing out 5kms from home is no longer a good idea. Instead we have decided it is time to test the legs with one gigantic descent, one mega climb, a brewery and a whole lot of coffee stops along the way. To add to which will be some very beautiful riding along the east coast taking in the beautiful coastal road.

The route is not confirmed but here's a flavour what it will likely look like when refined to 160kms:

http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/australia ... 9763814474

The elevation chart can be put on to see what it is likely to feel like. The entry criteria is as below:
-All riders must hold an affiliation with cycling nsw for insurance purposes with a minum of a 'ride it' licence or a racing license.
-all bike must be fixed, no free wheels will be allowed.
-Helmets must be worn at all times
-All bikes must have two well functioning brakes with thick brake pads, not worn out, this will be checked as the descent down macquarie pass will otherwise be dangerous
-riders must obey road rules at all times and must comply with the ride rules when stops are concerned or else official recognisition will not be granted to aceivement of finish.

An accompanying car will follow the ride with walking shoes for those who cannot climb up the stanwell tops climb and officially this will count as distance in the ride. But will only be available to do so between to be determined times.

To know:
-this is a very tough ride, all riders with any known medical conditions should check with their doctors prior to riding that they are up to riding before beggining.
- there is an accompying train line from wollongong which can be utilised for anyone who does not feel they can finish.

Fixie social:
-This year will also have the addition of a shortened ride with lots of coffee shops starting in wollongong at the brewery for lunch.
-this ride with be around 50kms and will bypass the stanwell tops climb via rail.
-the two rides will link up for this stretch of road.

http://www.dhbc.org.au/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1964

***Date to be decided but possibly September 12 at this stage.

I will confirm shortly, but currently 14th November is looking likely. Just need to confirm accommodation.

Accomodation for the 14th November might be a bit hard. That's the same day of the Highland Fling which is run out of Bundanoon. The area is going to be pretty densely populated that weekend.

Hmmm would love to come but my fixed up commuter is not drilled for a rear brake. Bizarrely, my track bike is drilled for front and rear but it's not something I'd want to sit on for this distance. Maybe I'll just have to join for the social leg...

Am I right to confirm you wouldn't want bull-horns / pursuit bars or tri bars on this?

Hmm, maybe 14th isn't so good then.....

Bull horns are fine as long as you have 2 hand brakes.

Orphic, when will you be on call? If I remember correctly, last year at Bundanoon, the only mobile that worked was Lindsay's one with the special aerial, till the battery went flat, he forgot to charge it. But I'd say there should be reception on most of the route, just not where we are staying overnight.

After speaking to Simon out at RAW, I suggested that we could have breakfast at Ye Olde Bicycle Shoppe. It's a cafe and bicycle hire place, with some nice murals of people on racing bikes. They also sell spare tubes, and stuff.

It's about 200m from the hotel, near the railway line.

Check it out here, including their menu:

They usually open at 8.30, but I rang up, and they said they would open up early (~7.15) if we wanted to go there for breakfast.

I worked with Lizanne and can vouch that she is a fit little bunny and should be able to do the ride easy. She rides a fixed with brakes but has little if no pack riding skills.

I would guess that you need to be a member of DHBC, or else hold a racing licence somewhere else to do this ride. Since this is an official club ride, only members are insured.

I'll get the details of membership and what ever off of you. if commuting with a group of 5-9 ppl counts as pack riding?
Are there any fixie or fixie friendly rides during the week/weekend i can join in on to get to know people.
Ya fitness is not a problem. I do short track speed skating(on ice) and ride about 300k on my bike to commute as a bit of bonus training!

id say do slowies on saturday, and maybe waterfall some where near the slow bunch on sunday, though be careful on peoples wheels if your not used to it on the fixie, the way out is easier on the fixie than on a road bike, the way back is killer on a fixie, not hard on a road bike.

Might be a bit misleading. The cheapest cycling licence is a recreational one(think it's called "cycling for all" now) and that is $77, which gives the following (taken from cyclingNSW website):
Recreational Licence
Recreational membership is offered as Senior (19 years and over), Junior (U19) and Family. It is designed for social riders looking for suitable insurance coverage, as well as being an affordable membership for administrators, coaches, officials and volunteers.
Recreational Licences include Public Liability and limited personal Accident insurance cover for participation in events such as organised recreational rides and formal training activity.
The main thing is that this will give you insurance coverage.

What gearing are people thinking of running for the century?

My fixie is currently set up 40/16 (with 170 cranks), which using the late Sheldon Brown's calculator gives a gain ratio of 4.9 (http://sheldonbrown.com/gears/). I note that the out of the box Surly Steamroller comes with 47/19, which gives an identical gear ratio of 4.9 (if cranks are 170).

I spin like a washing machine when going at speed, but I do find the ratio is perfect for my daily commute which has a few hills (Lilyfield Rd being the nice one). So I guess it will be good for going up (but not down) the hills we'll encounter, especially as we climb back from Wollongong.

Also, I've copied Simon's route across to Bikely: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Bundanoon-to-Tempe

That's really low Timbo. Last year I think I had the highest gearing at 77" (40/14).

Gearing is a personal choice...

I will be running the same I did last year... 44/17 which is 69.9". I figure that if you can do Waterfall on it you can do the fixie centry on it.

The fact is that you are going to have to brake going down Macquarie pass anyway, and it's not a race so you aren't going to get left behind.

There is talk of people flipping over to an alternate gear for Stanwell... But I say that's cheating! Man up and ride your gear the whole ride ;)

I had 81" on last year & got up old razor back as Alex reminds me answering the phone, but old razor back is nothing like the stanwell park climb. I think some where between 70" & 75" is probably about right. But if you can get a flip flop, a smaller gear for the climb will come in handy.

Oww!
lol :D can i video you riding up the big hill in your gear that you arent changing :) either that or while your riding down the hill in the previously chosen small one :P
(lol id personally have no trouble riding down the big hill on a smaller gear, id just use the brakes :P

Yeah, I don't mind just using the brakes on the way down the big hill. I don't have a flip flop to change gears, but even if I did I doubt I could be bothered.

Velofix is going to put on a 15 sprocket, so I'll be 40/15 (70").

Thats because we usually don't bother to use the fancy formula that the web site calculator uses. If I use that calculator my fixie will have either 70.1 or 74.2 where I would usually just call them 72 (48/18) and 76 (48/17).

Gear inches are good because they're easy to calculate on the fly and everyone understands them. I don't understand why a different crank length would affect the calculation. One rotation is one rotation of either the crank or the wheel...

Mechanical Advantage...well that's a different calculation entirely.

Yep. The common protocol is to assume that everyone rides on 27" wheels, even though almost no-one does anymore. So 42 x 15 is colloqually referred to as 72" pretty much everywhere. The calculator is therefore giving the same answer as Karzie if you use the protocol wheel size. I.e. 72".

Crank length is only used if you are calculating development, but since no-one ever really does, I'd say you can ignore it.

We tend to use "traditional inches" which means we are calculating based on a 27" wheel even though we are using 700c.

Crank length is used when calculating out foot velocity, usually called gain ratios. To simplify 5mm of extra crank length is about one tooth on the big ring. So if you were running a 48 and 170's and you switched to 175's, to maintain the same foot velocity you would put a 49 on.

All rather complicated and rather boring. Ride the bike, if hills are easy, bump the gear up, if hills are hard lower the gear

This year more than most years could require training for, not just to be used as a training event :)

Some may be able to get their bikes on the bus, I took the bus from Wollongong on Monday. For the ones that don't fit in;

12.08 Wolli Creek -> Macarthur 1.03 -> ride to Bundanoon 96.6k (approx 5 hours including breaks)

This is a problem, will we be able to get our bikes on the buses? This is the question, I've been denied this on a bus in the blue mountains when there was track work.

From city rails website:
Space is sometimes limited aboard train replacement bus services. Be aware that bicycles, surfboards, luggage trolleys and other bulky items are carried at the driver's discretion - you may have to wait for a bus with space available.

Hmmm, well I guess the is no guarantee as to if we can get our bikes on or not. So the option is to try, and potentially be turned away in which case you will have to ride. Not really keen on riding 100km fixed with a backpack, personally.

The other option would be to get the train down on Friday night, but that will require accomodation on the Friday evening and may not suit everyone (both time wise and financially).

I don't know if I can backup two fixed days, especially a week after the 24 hour. If it's a case of ride down on Saturday or don't go I might have to pull out. It's supposed to be fun as well as painful.

My wife and I and our two kids are driving down on the Saturday (we are staying in Sutton Forest). We could give someone (and their fixed machine) a lift to Bundanoon. Although you'd have to be prepared to be squeezed a bit in the back seat, taking a bike would be no drama at all.
