Anyone interested in an M7 jaunt? Probably at 25s pace. The ride would be Marrickville, M5, M7, rest/coffee in Parramatta Park about about the 80km mark, home via paths/Rookwood.

Do you want to lock that one in for the 9th January?

Bugger it then - I'm in for the 9th.
Rough outline of the route is Illawarra Rd, Homer St, onto the M5, exit M5 at beech road, down to Camden Valley Way and then onto the M7 path. Out on Old Windsor Road and follow the trails to Parramatta Park. Pause in the park for a drink, then home via M4 path and roads to Lidcombe, through Rookwood Cemetery and Cooks River trail/roads to Marrickville.
About 110kms, no major climbs but the M7 is notorious for lack of loos, water and food stops. There's one tap at about the 60km mark, which will be a good stop as it's about the same distance as Sutherland. Then a 15 minute rest in the park, before the cruise home.
I've only done the M5 on the path as far as King George's Rd, so if you know it better feel free to let me know.

What's the consensus on this Sunday's adventure ride? Johnny Warren killing it? Likely rain killing it? Either way, I say a 6:30 AM start. I'm tired enough as is without making it an early start. I'll happily lead it again on February 9th. I may even be fit by then ...

Your post has sent me to the BoM. It has to be said that the forecast for Sunday morning looks exceptionally negative. I guess this ride would be much more fun in half-decent weather. Still, I've got to do something to help prepare for Bright the next week.

Re: Adventure Rides 2011

Posted: 08 Jan 2011, 15:54
by simon.sharwood
BoM now says "Cloudy. Areas of rain during the morning, easing to isolated showers by early evening. Isolated thunderstorms, most likely during the morning. Winds southeasterly averaging up to 25 km/h tending easterly up to 30 km/h during the afternoon."

What think we?

Re: Adventure Rides 2011

Confusing isn't it?

A smorgasboard of rides, pesky Russian attacks and inclement BoM predictions.

I'm interested in doing this route Simon.

Who else is pondering?

That's it. I am motivated to ride this evening... To add a few ks before the rains arrive.

I'm still pondering it, but that forecast sounds pretty awful. I could be talked into it, but am leaning towards the nays.

Re: Adventure Rides 2011

by simon.sharwood
The revised forecast says 80% chance of rain, with some thunderstorms, and on that basis I don't think it prudent to run this ride.
Once we hit the M5 there's about 25kms without shelter and very few chances to exit the road.
Once on the M7 path, there is only occasional shelter but if things were to get really nasty it would mean huddling under an overpass. Things get a bit sparse out there too: it's not like we could find a friendly shopping centre with a cute cafe to wait out a storm.
So I'll push this one out to the date of the next adventure ride.

As it turns out, the date of the M7 adventure coincides with the first ever Amy Gillett ride in NSW. I agree with Stuart (see his thread about the ride here: http://www.dhbc.org.au/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2231) that it's a pretty important event, but rather than cancel this adventure again propose to make it the second leg of a two-week Tour De West Sydney as follows:

Week One. Feb 13th - Marrickville to Parramatta for the 55km Amy ride - course here: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/24100380. Riders can either bail towards the end of the course and head back to DH, or go on to the "multicultural food and entertainment festival in Parramatta Park" at the end and head home by bike or train.

Week Two, Feb 20th - The M7 ride.

At the end of the Tour, you'll have seen a lot of Western Sydney and got about 200kms into your legs.

I was talking to someone today who rode the M7 last week. They said there is road work going on in places and that sometimes it is necessary to use the breakdown lane rather than the cycle way. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Hmmm ... I've had a look at the m7 site and there are indeed three blocks to the path - http://www.westlinkm7.com.au/
The first looks easy to get around
The second and third look a bit scary.
Perhaps a quick show of hands now or with a 6:15 start we can sew what folks think then without too much harm if we pull out - waterfall is only 15 mins later

Thanks for a great ride today Simon, Paul, Peter, Miguel. I'm feeling a little sore after crashing...stupid speed humps! Thanks heaps for your support when I was feeling a bit shaken up.
The bike's at Burwood Cycle World having its rear wheel and derailleur fixed. They have no white spokes to replace the bent ones...they're speaking to Koga about getting some from Holland. Could take a while. In the meantime I have an old Rolf wheel I'm getting them to put on which will keep me going until the other one is fixed.
Cheers, guys!

Not following the calendar here but I'm looking at running an adventure ride on Easter Friday, 22nd April. This will be a Marrickville-Wakehurst Parkway-Akuna Bay-Narrabeen-Manly-Marrickville ride at around a fast Cruisers pace (or 'real' C28's pace if you like). Faster riders are welcome to sit on the front the whole way but will be asked to respect the pace guidelines, especially on the hills! Look to leave at 6:00am and stop for breakfast at either Narrabeen or Dee Why, depending on what is open. I won't be adding the West Head loop keeping the distance to about 105k's.

here's a map >> http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/fullscreen/6283660/

Confirmation and more details to follow.

Thanks Stu. Yes, and there's often numerous logging trucks. I'll be out there EARLY and hope the return is uneventful. The ride from Wauchope on is the best bit. I'll be riding with my brother in law and he wants to do the Comboyne ride sometime that weekend as well, if we can fit it in. Should be a great long weekend for all of us. Five days off and a short work week to follow. The Orthodox Easter is the same time as well this year. Very unusual.

BTW - this ride is definitely on for a 6:00am start this Friday unless it's raining. Check here if the weather looks dodgy - I'll post at around 5:30am, but only if it's off.

Route again is Marrickville-SHB-Military Rd-The Spit-Wakehurst Parkway-Forest Way-Akuna Bay-Narrabeen-Manly-SHB-Marrickville. About 105 k's at a fast cruisers pace of around 26-27kph. There will be designated waiting points so that nobody is left behind but you should have at least done Waterfall at a comfortable C25's pace or similar ride before coming along. Also, 2 water bottles may be helpful if you like to drink lots of water although there are servo's and places to fill up along the route.

Map >> http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/fullscreen/6283660/

See you on Friday.

Posted: 21 Apr 2011, 09:17

I just wanted to reiterate that this Fridays ride is a Cruisers pace ride. If you want to come along but normally like to ride faster than that then you'll have to just take it easy for this one as I don't want the bunch splintering up the road all the time due to pressure from the front. When I say 26-27kph that's average, not necessarily cruising speed. While I'd love to say I could ride on the front the whole way to set the pace, you know that won't happen!

So while the bigger hills will see the bunch separate somewhat with a regroup at the top (or bottom for that matter) I'd like to see the bunch stay together at other times.

Ride captain over and out.

Well a great ride it was indeed. Thanks to all 24 riders for coming along. This meant we could split into two bunches so the faster riders could head off into the distance at their own pace and us cruisers could also have a lovely enjoyable ride. I was however totally trashed when I got home and had to sleep for 1.5hrs followed by a great massage to get my legs back into working order.

A big shout out to the cruisers bunch who wouldn't abandon the ride captain after I partially hit the wall & put in a fairly pitiful showing on the climb up from the spit (oh, & up to Manly Rd for that matter). The weather was perfect, the company great, the scenery and lack of cars a welcome change from Waterfall, the Driftwood Cafe at Narrabeen a stand out in coping with so many people with good humour, great service and yummy food & also a thanks to the NSW Police Force for keeping such a close eye on our parked bikes.

here's a photo of the cruisers bunch at Coal & Candle Creek where we stopped for water and wee's.

I'll take the 12th June adventure ride slot - we will go RNP, Waterfall in and Bundeena out with a trip on the ferry. Can someone who has one of these post a route map? We'll leave from the corner of Marrickville and Illawarra Roads in Marrickville at 6.30am and ride up with the bunch. Pace will be about 26. There's a 10am ferry from Bundeena. We should be back at Marrickville at about 11.30 unless we stop for coffee in Cronulla. Is there any food in Bundeena?

However, if someone has a better, excellent idea for a different ride, happy to get suggestions. I'll need a map though. Route planning is not my forte.

The date is wrong either way - it's Sunday 19th at the moment, but a call to change it.

Here is a short poll. Please cut and paste and add your name

I'm ambivalent so I put my name down for both - but really it's a choice. Feel free to put your name in both lists. Biggest list by Wednesday wins.

I'm happy either way, and will be there with bells on. I also know the way - and do recommend we stop for at least a coffee in Bundeena. It might not be of Inner West quality, but the setting is worth indulging and the local wildlife always worth a watch.

If it was my call, I'd go with Stuart -bigger surface area & therefore more drafting effect. And man, those silver moonboots! :)

Yes, the TTT is Sun 19th June - another reason to go with this weekend!

OK - it's this weekend Sunday June 12th.

6.30am at the normal starting place near corner of Illawarra and Marrickville Roads. We'll head off with the bunch and split at Waterfall.

Weather could be dodgy so we'll watch and see.

A bit late but this Sunday works for me. I'll also be coming along with a mate from Newie. Hope that suits everyone? He is surely fitter and faster than I am anyway...!

Here's to TTT training! And fitting in to my skinny pants this morning...

I'm keen for RNP on Sunday assuming that it is ok weather. Sunday is still looking wet and windy atm. I'll pass on the skinny pants though...

UPDATE

The weather might be dodgy tomorrow and BOM is suggesting possible showers near the coast, which is where we will be. We won't do the descent from Waterfall into RNP if it's wet as it isn't safe.

I'll check the radar tomorrow morning and postpone til next week if it looks too wet. We can always just do a normal Waterfall ride and go back to Marrickville, knowing that we've got next week up our sleeve.

If we do go, then dress warmly as it will be cold and windy, you can also get quite cold descending into RNP, but then have the opportunity to warm up because what goes down, then goes up. Make sure you take food and enough water, even though it is cold you'll still need it.

I'll post a further update by 5.40am Sunday morning.

I'll be on the forum, 5.41, to see what's what.

I do hope you HAB is coming Eleri? He'd be more than capable of it.

He is coming, but annoyed that I moved it and didn't tell him. I assumed he read the forum like everyone else, but apparentlly we are supposed to talk to each other. Go figure.

UPDATE - The ride is postponed to next week. The rain prediction has been upgraded and there is rain everywhere.

Those who want to go to Waterfall, I'm sure some hardy souls will go but I won't be one of them.

Was looking forward to Waterfall at least....bugger this rain. They called off A & B grade at Eastern Dragway halfway through the race. Track was slippery and 3 accidents - 1 broken collarbone and 2 other injuries where people went to hospital. Bed looks like a good option today. I'm just not that hard core.

Adam and I are hard core. We went to slowies yesterday in the rain, but we had no friends.

According to something I read on fb, Audley Weir was flooded yesterday and therefore closed. Not that we were going that way but it says something about how much water is in the park. Pity, I was looking forward to a 30km tailwind through the park!
