DHBC 7 part criterium series: Race 1 Prologue & scratch race.

Criterium: Sunday 6/03/2010
Location: Dunc Gray Criterium circuit
Start time: 7:30am- 8am
Expected finish time: 8:30am-9:30am
Cost: $5 for racing
Prize money: nil.
Race:Riders must do a one lap screamer of the track, places are given as per placings based on time. Grading will also be decided on these times though riders may choose not to accept their grading and choose a grade instead. A/B, C/D & E/F scratch race to follow. Overall points for the day will be absed on position in both events.

The plan is that everybody meet at Mick Mazza's at 6:30am as usual & ride out together race & ride back as like last month. The route has been found to be suprisingly safer & quieter than expected.

Riders will need to enter through the pedestrian gates as the main gates will be locked. For driving you will need to park on the street

If anybody chooses to drive out or is coming from another direction & doesn't know where dunc Gray is; here's the map:

I'm definitely in if it's on. I really enjoyed fighting off the wind at Heffron Park yesterday with Geoff. Hopefully we can get a big turnout!

Hi Simon - can you (or somebody else who knows) post the route you take to Dunc please so we can join the bunch somewhere near Milton St or on George's River Rd (assuming that's the way the bunch still goes)? Thanks in advance.

Thanks Mike. I've done a route for the ride. Can you tell me if this is correct? We can then use it for the website, as a permanent link for the DHBC crits.

Note I've taken the liberty of shortening it somewhat by going straight ahead at New Canterbury Rd and taking some back streets, coincidently going straight past our place

Seriously though, it is a bit shorter and uses more back streets, although it has more turns. If we want to keep to the original route I'll edit it and re-post.

I don't have any problems with the route adjustment past rocket ship park, its a route I'm familiar with too. Guess it depends on who is ride captain

Hi Tim - Do you mean the original route, or my revised "rocket-ship park" route?

Oh, and is the route correct all the way? I've only guessed at which way we went the one and only time I've ridden to Dunc.

It's correct apart from your early modifications.

The only issue i see with your route is crossing Old Canterbury Rd, which i don't think is the safest if there's a bit of traffic around.

At Old Canterbury Rd it's a Left then immediate right, which I agree on reflection is probably not the best. I'll change it to the old route.

I'll be waiting on Georges River Road near the corner of Burwood Rd about say 0650. (sleep-in - woohoo!)

If there's rain we will notify of any cancellation on the forum by 6:15am (probably closer to 6am). Someone will also be at Mick Mazzas at 6:30am to let any others know.

Thanks to the organisers for a great morning's ride. It was my first race. If you have been doing Waterfall 28s you can prob have a go at racing. I's alot of fun.

I'll be back to work the fastest line through the tight left hander ... without brakes.

Don't worry Alex, i missed it too. A week of not enough sleep caught up with me and i decided i was too tired after getting up, though getting a work related phone call in the middle of the night didn't help much.

just uploaded my Garmin data for the race and it just shows you that it's not really always to be trusted.

Garmin said my initial flying lap was 1:22, Chris said 1:21:76 so pretty bloody close allowing for me pressing the stop button after the line. Then in the E/F race Garmin says we lapped between 1:31 and 1:39 which sounds about right - then it says my last lap, where I took off on the downhill bit and through the double left to get a gap was 1:12 ... which is just not possible as I see the flying laps of many other faster riders are not that low (although I know they were standing starts) .... I was really keen to see how I'd gone on that lap too! Anyone else have lap data?

I think you have found the answer yourself. This is similar to to how red lights can dramatically lower your ride averages. Yes it's true, you CAN DO 1:12 laps!

You were flying when you went past Stuart.

The 1 lap screamer is a little deceptive, on mine I entered the corner at the bottom at 48.5kph and I think I hit 52.3kph in the dip, however my average speed was only 43.5kph. If A grade had cranked it up for an entire lap (I don't have data), then that average could of been beaten.

Now combine your last lap speed with more confidence in the corner and you could of done something like 1:12

I'd like to add my thanks to Simon and the organisers as well.

Will the one-lap screamer be a regular part of the program?
I think it really would add something to the year's racing to have a personal best time to try and beat every month.

yeah.. having a one lap screamer every month that added points onto the table of over all could be a good idea :D it doesnt advantage any one... :D (though Alex chubb is the time trialist that hasnt trialled yet, so i may not be smiling so much next time :P)

Yeh, I was hot on the one lap screamer, so I've set the bar high for next time. I recon there's a little bit of improvement left in me, but no way I can bridge the 2 seconds to you Tim, you were on fire.

55 is probably technically possible but difficult, you would need to hit 55kph before the first right hander and take it thru the sharp corners, without loosing any speed. 60 into the dip and then back to 55 by the start/finish. Way outside my ability
