How was the course itself? And any hassles signing on etc? I pulled up ok on Sunday but am glad I didn't come as I don't think I'd have then pulled up ok on Monday. Next month for sure though - I just worry it'll be a little crowded a couple of weeks before the main event. Perhaps we could ride up one Saturday and just do it ourselves?

The course was more hilly than i imagined it would be, espically the one about 5km from the end - I didnt expect that. its nicknamed 'blood hill' for some reason. ... Def going back next month to do a PB.

You have to do it for real Camilla, if you just ride up there it wouldnt be the same - unless you just want to see what the course is like.

First time off a starting ramp as well, all pretty well organised, you even pick your own starting time between 8 and 10am.

Found out what those funny figures on the ATTA site mean;

1. Age, which is noted as 3 years younger than my actual age.
2. Difference between actual time and time expected for a rider of the same age and gender.

So, according to their specs, I was 4m13s faster that what was expected of a male 3 years younger than me.

Don't know how they work out the time calculation

Well last Sunday Mark Amy and I returned. Joining us was Eleri and Camilla. We invoked an informal handicap by nominating start times.

We had guessed Eleri's and Camilla handicap and got it wrong. At the halfway point, Amy had 2k on me and Mark had 800mtrs. Amy won the handicap this time.

All of our times were slower than last time, in particular mine. I noted that the air was colder and hence denser, Paul Meeham added that TDF probably didn't help either.

Results - 25k course
40.07 Mike
40.27 Mark L
43.11 Amy
51.09 Camilla
51.28 Eleri

So that makes the informal handicap, for next time we go;
Mike - Scratch
Mark L + 1
Amy + 4
Camilla + 11
Eleri + 12

Whole minutes makes the handicapping a little inaccurate, but what the heck :)

So, I bit the bullet and signed up for the State Titles today - entries close tomorrow. Sure I was about 6 minutes slower than I should have been last Sunday, according to age, possibly more, but this time I'll remember not to do a no resistance sprint session a few days beforehand and that way will hopefully at least be able to walk properly. Who am I kidding? I'm out of shape. But what the hey - it's only 5$ more than a usual Sunday and time trials are fun!

Who else is in?

OK, I entered. I'm going to go 20 seconds faster and beat you Camilla,

unless you try harder (or get uninjured)

Oh No! Eleri's thrown down the (love & hate) gauntlet!

Right. Training starts tomorrow! Well, Sunday. I like symmetry. 14 days to drop 2kg and, according to the last time it was run at Calga, lose 16 minutes to be competitive in my age group! Ah haaaaa haa haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa ha! gulp.

Lucky for me Eleri isn't in my age group, so I don't have to play by the rules. :D

Thank goodness! Thanks Mike - I realise now that the ITT course is 5km less and more downhill than the usual atta Calga course. 16 mins out of 51 seemed a lot to have to drop! I still have a battle on my hands, but don't feel quite as doomed.

Thanks Mike, will aim to get there at 7 then.
If I get an 8am start I should be done by lunchtime,
which gives plenty of time to get back to the wedding.

See you guys there!

RIDE REPORT - ATTA 2 OCTOBER 43km course.

So I sat at my computer at 530am this morning look at the BOM weather
map and deciding weather I should head up to Calga this morning... It
wasn't looking good - radar was a big blob of red so it was raining hard,
and the wind thing said the wind gusts were up to 50km/hr at Mangrove
Mt. But I had gone to the trouble to wake up and I had packed my stuff
last night so I thought 'its never as bad as it looks', so I did the drive and
did my first Calga race.

It wasn't too windy when I was warming up, but it was cold and raining
hard. The rain eased off while I was on the first 10-15kms or so, but by the
time I got to the Wiseman's Ferry Rd turnoff it started raining really hard,
and I was getting blown around the road a fair bit.. I wasn't feeling too safe
at speed so I eased off the gas down that big hill to the turn-around. I was
actually feeling really good and wasn't feeling fatigued , I'm not sure of my
time at the turn but was averaging 38km/hr which I was happy with in those
conditions. I was feeling really good on the way back - did the hill up to
Wiseman's Ferry Rd but as I got to the top all of a suddent it just POURED!!
It was windy, I could hardly see the rain was so hard, water was flowing across
the road and I felt like it was all a little out of control and getting really dangerous
being in those conditions on an open road (in my opinion), so I got out of the
aero-bars and really eased up. Pretty dissapointed because I was feeling
really good and it felt mostly downhill on the way back - I get the feeling
you could really hammer those last 8-10kms. I should have gone out quite a
bit harder too, I think I was a bit nervous about my fitness. Anyways, next
time.... My final time was 1:11.

It was lots of fun though and really good experience. Really looking forward
to having another go when the conditions are good. If you haven't done it
before I really recomend it - great fun starting out of the little booth, the
course is nice, very few cars (and they have lots of time and space to get
around you so I think its very safe) and fun to ride [well it would be
usually :) ]. And note to self - need a longer warm-up when it's cold like that!
I think a good 45-60mins would have been good to get the legs going, I
only felt like I was getting wound up at about the turn around point.

Wow, long post... sorry for boring you all to death....

Wow Pat! That's hard core. Especially because the weather up there looked even more wild than here. Hope you didn't have a disk wheel, otherwise you would be blown away somewhere out in the bush!

I also braved the weather for my first time trial - but only did the 25km... wish i knew to look out for another club member who was silly enough to brave the weather. Its a bit of fun, and well worth the trip up -- hopefully better weather next time!

Personally I prefer the 25k distance, but I'll do the 40 sometime.

Choppo and I drove out but pulled the pin at Turramurra and had breakie at the NSCC coffee stop. I had the bike ready to roll.

Yeah It think the 25 would probably suit me better as a rider, but the 43 is a cool distance and ive been trying to improve my endurance so the 43 is a good way to work on it.

nice bike mike! looks super fast!

i did see one person with a full disc, which looked a little silly in the conditions i thought. i guess if you've bought one you might as well ride with it, unless of course its going to blow you off the road... Skyer next month i'll look out for you - Im not sure who you are though unfortunately :( this year i rarely made an appearance outside of track training/events, so unfortunately I don't know too many of the roadies. i do hope to ride in more road stuff this coming year though! i was wearing my dhbc jersey though?!?!

Good time patn, wouldn't of been easy in those conditions.

I've been using the 25 as a reference point, but I'll do the 43 sometime.

Yeh, shame its not mine, the bike is owned by Choppo and the wheels are owned by Matty Clarke, who is a top triathlete. I was going to use the ITT as a shakedown for next week and to get some comparison data between the road bike with clipons vs the ITT bike with tri spokes.

Skyer, what time did you do? we can add you to the informal DHBC handicap for next time

I did a 51m... not too happy with the time - excuses include: rain, first time, 3 weeks off the bike... just getting soft.

I'm thinking i might head up and to the MWCC road race this weekend, or the NSCC crit on 16 Oct. Does anyone generally head out for those?

It was your first time, now you have a base to work against.

Based on your feedback I'll set the 25k informal handicap to;
Mike - Scratch
Mark L + 1
Amy + 4
Skye + 10
Camilla + 11
Eleri + 12

Just a bit of fun, nothing serious

Patn, do you want to be added to the informal handicap?

Yeah add me for sure.i want to focus on the 43, but my average speed for that gives me a a 41 for the 25km, so chuck new ib with that-fits in well and gives me a goal to work toward
