At least you can login to the online system. I sent them an email about it and the reply was

"If you continue to have this issues logging in, please download a manual entry form from our website and forward it through to michael at michael.buckingham@*********.org.au"

So if I wanted to enter the Dinnerville i would need a time machine and an envelope.

so

I just called them after 9.00am and Andrew took my details to register
- happy days :)

then I called Cycling Australia to ask why my details haven't been updated and 2 minutes later I got a conformation email saying a new card will be re-issued and Margaret from Cycling Aust will contact Cycling NSW to make sure

So now that I've entered what exactly am I in for? :P

I know that it's 90 km done as several laps of a course in Dapto but I don't really know the race, course or how it's run.

- It's handicapped but does everyone start at the same time and place? Will the DHBC group all ride out together or if we have different handicaps would that split us up?
- What's the average speed for such a race? So far I've only ridden criteriums which are super fast but short.
- What are the climbs in the course like? I have a compact crank and an 11-25 cassette on my race wheels, would I need to swap that to my 13-29 cassette?
- Do you generally carry spare tubes etc? For the crits we're not allowed to but I'd imagine for a long race like this one it might be wise to carry at least a spare tube and some CO2.
- Is it any good for spectators? My parents were thinking about going down to watch.

The climb is not that difficult, the difficulty is ensuring you are not dropped on the hill

Andrew, in answer to your questions:
- Riders will be split into a number of groups, probably about 12, based on their supposed ability. The slowest group will leave first, the fastest last. Gaps between groups vary depending on group size. We tend to drive down to the race. The start is in the carpark so there's no need to ride anywhere beforehand although you'll want to warm up because...
- Handicaps are hard races. Theoretically you should be riding flat out for the duration of the race. You'll certainly start hard anyway. The intent is to catch all the groups in front of you without being caught by the groups behind. Once you've caught all the front groups you can start to think about sitting in and sprinting for the win but till then it's sort of a moot strategy. With that said there'll be people sitting in in your group from kilometer 0. Average speed will depend upon your group and whether you get caught by a faster group or not, but for the middle bunches it will be around 40 km/hr.
- The course is rolling. The climb is not hard in training in a granny gear but is hard at race pace when you've been riding flat out for 70 kms, been up it twice already, have been caught by scratch and are trying to go over it 39/14. Context is everything, as with any climb. Your cassette will be fine.
- That's up to the individual. The road surface is terrible and if you flat at the back-end of the course you're a long way from home. A saddlebag isn't a bad idea.
- Quite a number of people set up at the top of the hill, I think it's called Marshall Mount. There'll be plenty of Flanders flags there and if you know those Classics then you'll know the type of climb it is. It's a short steep climb approaching from one side and a long shallow climb approaching from the other so it's good viewing there.
So now that I've entered what exactly am I in for? :P

I know that it's 90 km done as several laps of a course in Dapto but I don't really know the race, course or how it's run.

Just out of curiosity

do you stop for nature breaks or do you get your team mates and go eurostyle ?

and being my first road race of such a distance is it similar to doing waterfall and back or am I kidding myself

naw you do the nervous pee before the race, and I thought it was like waterfall (last year was my first ever road race), but it totally isn’t. There are no traffic lights, the extra 10k is a killer, and it’s game on the whole time. It’s a hard race, but oh so much fun

Hung, its like doing Waterfall without stopping. 2 water bottles and a some energy gels are all you need.

Posted: 02 Mar 2012, 11:14
by rhys
Here are some tips for beginners I learned from the internet and hanging out at Cheeky.
Tape your energy gels to the top tube and set your Garmin for 15 minute alerts. This reminds you to eat and drink and let's everyone around you know how on top of things you are. Relieve yourself as you ride along - mid pack, no one will care, its only yellow water really. A sleeveless jersey will also help you look experienced, but the sign of a true pro is some compression calf socks. You might have to execute a bike change throughout the race due to your zipp 1080s are too wind effected, so write your race number on your arms with big black nikko.

Hopefully this is of some use to you guys.

i'm planning on a bright and early (i'm thinking first tain out) train ride down to dapto to do hill repeats. i wanna do every gear i have and find which one i like the best. i only have 15 of my gears working and a few in the big ring are just not gonna happen, so maybe 10 the great big hill.

if this sounds like a fun saturday, you'r more than welcome to join.

otherwise, Adrian and I will be going one saturday later in april, when he's free.

Mike, thanks but I have some very special magic heel wedging and cleat shimming stuff happening with my shoes that I don't want to disturb. Doesn't matter anyway, just tried my shoes on again and although one of the buckles is broken it still works, just the nice little lever part that's snapped off.

5:20 am ugh :( I'd have to leave my house around 4:50 at the latest assuming I drive to Wolli Creek. How fast do people go up this hill anyway? Any idea of gradients and speeds?

Where would you be meeting there Lizanne? I might drive down and meet you at Dapto high school, we could do a reccy of the whole course one time if someone knows the route?

I can't do this saturday as I'm a fair bit off a decent level of fitness, and I would like to be in good form for a realistic approach to the course. I also have other stuff on. Good idea though.

Why do you guys need to go all the way out to Dapto to do hill repeats? The stiff hill is around 40m in elevation change. And given the repeated rolling hills on that course, loops of RNP would provide equal if not better training. As for recon, there'll be 3 laps of the course and nothing too much happens on the first two. By then, you'll be sufficiently familiar with it and be ready to "die" on the last run up it - If you are still around.

i have nothing to do on saturday, and i like it out there.

plus i want to ride the course a few times so i know where the turns and pot holes are. then i want to be able to see landmarks on the hill and figure out when and where i can push for the KOM, without totally burning myself out.

@ rhys, i'l be leaving my place, cnr of the princess hwy and brodie spark drive, and then riding 500m to the train station.
you doing the ride tomorrow in centenial, we can chat about when a better time will be good for you.

I agree with Weiyun, I see no point in riding the actual course. Its a terrible road surface. Its not a matter of learning where the pot holes are more like where they are not, I like to describe this course as every now and again you'll hit a smooth patch.

Apart from pot holes, you'll also collect a quantifiable amount of cow dung along the way. It's just not the first choice for a weekend training ride. ;)

Don't wear a skin suit, its not a TT so you'll look like a fool. You use your race wheels at this race if you don't like them and want to buy some new ones, read previous post about the terrible surface. If you're running clinchers then I'd go a slightly lower tyre pressure like 90 or 100psi, it'll make the ride much nicer.

mid length adds weight

If your got enough riders for your training ride, it would be worthwhile doing a paceline while your there.

BTW I don't give a S*** about what people think of what I'm wearing, so I'm exempt from christian's comment, which is correct

Adrian can bring the fairy bread. Geoff can bring the sparklers, who's going to bring the jumping castle though?

I won't be doing any burgling this year then! Anyone know, roughly, what the average speed will be for bunch 8?

I just answered my own question. Going on last year's times, it'll be about 39km/h for bunch 8.

Thanks Amy, thanks Mark. Being in bunch 10 last year actually meant a lot of work up front because it was such a small group. Hopefully I can sit in the middle of bunch 8 this year and be dragged along by the train!

I'm jumping on a train at 6:45 from my place. that will get me in at 8:30. That will leave me time for a pre ride feed and coffee, followed by a warm up ride.

Race report.

Started well in bunch 9 despite dragging along a fair amount of bludgers.

Didn't make it over Marshal Mount the third time and retired from race. Disappointing performance but am happy that I know where I have to work on.

The only issue is how?

Always next time.

In lieu of a detailed race report (the duty to do this falls to Adrian as the best placed DHBC rider!) here are the club results:

First of all the finish order:

http://www.nsw.cycling.org.au/site/cycl ... 0order.pdf

Place 16 Adrian EMILSEN GROUP 9 (7:30 handicap) Time: 2:22:37
Place 53 Matthew WALLMAN GROUP 5 (21:30 handicap) Time: 2:11:21
Place 67 Tim STEPHENS GROUP 8 (12:30 handicap) Time: 2:20:23
Place 101 Michael CLEMENT GROUP 7 (16:00 handicap) Time: 2:21:45
Place 113 Simon BERRY GROUP 9 (7:30 handicap) Time: 2:33:06
Place 115 Geoff MARTIN GROUP 9 (7:30 handicap) Time: 2:46:09

Then the individual times:

http://www.nsw.cycling.org.au/site/cycl ... 0order.pdf

Place 40 Matthew WALLMAN GROUP 5 (21:30 handicap) Time: 2:11:21
Place 86 Tim STEPHENS GROUP 8 (12:30 handicap) Time: 2:20:23
Place 89 Michael CLEMENT GROUP 7 (16:00 handicap) Time: 2:21:45
Place 91 Adrian EMILSEN GROUP 9 (7:30 handicap) Time: 2:22:37
Place 113 Simon BERRY GROUP 9 (7:30 handicap) Time: 2:33:06
Place 115 Geoff MARTIN GROUP 9 (7:30 handicap) Time: 2:46:09

And here are the finish photos (there is a great one of Geoff in the second who looks exceptionally relaxed!):

My race report: Started ok, group worked poorly except for a handful of DHCC & ICC riders keeping it together. On cresting the 2nd hill climb I tried to form a selection with Adrian & Taylor to shed the bludgers but the ICC riders slowed it back down. Worth a try. Found myself at the back of the bunch on the 3rd lap decent just as group 7/8 caught us. I tried to hang on and did until the turn around point at the school when i took the wrong line exiting the school and it was race over. That was not the reason for the drop though, i was feeling like junk pretty much the entire race except for the 3 climbs. Didn't really bother trying to latch onto the other bunches, i was shot. Congrats to Adrian! Very strong riding and looked comfortable throughout the race.

Things i learnt on sunday
1. I hate road races. they are too long
2. the hills i have been doing really paid off.
3. It's hard work when half the bunch slacks off
4. I need to manage my asthma better
5. I need to do it again next year... and not get dropped

Bring on the track season

things I learnt on Sunday

1) someone owes me money as I was the first DHBC rider to get dropped on first hill
2) other riders don't really want to chit chat while racing
3) A month off the bike ( due to injurys of course ) prior to the race does not help
4) remember to yell out EASE UP when your on your limit
5) actually do 90km training rides and not 50km ones and think she'll be right

Whats this ? the Excuse list?

NSW open racing is a major step up from riding Waterfall with the club.

You know that now :-)

at the 60km mark I was looking for the 7-eleven to refill my bottle and have a nature break but realised I was at dapto not sutherland then I Saw Taylor and Nic and decided it was a good idea to roll back with them so in a way it was like waterfall :)
