Sun Club Ride: Royal National Park (RNP) 6:00am

Posted: 17 Sep 2012, 12:49
by geoff m
Due to large numbers turning up on Sunday, and some enthusiasm for riders to take on RNP, we've decided to reinstate the RNP ride after a few years absence. This time however the ride will be weekly until further notice.

The ride will leave teh public square next to the Post Cafe at 6.00am sharp and likely to return 9.30 to 9.45am.

It's a ride suited for strong C28 riders and above. Pace going out should be somewhere between C28s/Middies with each group to find the right speed, making sure everyone stays together. The idea is not to blow everyone up prior to taking on the RNP. Waiting for riders at the top of hills in the Park at appropriate waiting points will be required as well.

Having said that, riders who are new to C28s or find C28s quite challenging should not join this group and will likely to be dropped. This is not your ride (but one you should aspire to and continue your training for).

Odd Weeks (1st, 3rd and 5th Sunday) will be in at Waterfall, and Even Weeks will be in at Audley.

Whilst Dulwich Hill Bicycle Club tries to have Cycle Skills coaches assigned to some of our rides, because of the limited number of volunteers taking this role, this is not always possible, nor can this ever be guaranteed. In the case of the RNP ride, if a Cycle Skills Coach decides to ride on that particular day, they will identify themselves to the group, but mostly there will not be one. Take care, communicate well and remember to look out for each other. You are all aware of the dangers of cycling.

I'll ask Stuart to update details of this ride on our website.

If club members wish to organise a RNP ride earlier than the 6th by using this thread, feel free to do so, and the ride will launch earlier.

Excellent. I'll be doing the RNP again this week. Happy to go in either way if anyone else is interested. Also happy to start at 6 if we get enough riders.

Previously, the RNP rides were every 2nd Sun, alternating entry points. Do you think we'll get enough riders for every weekend?

Stuart. Club numbers have doubled since last time and we are getting riders going into RNP every week now by their own organisation. So worth a shot. We can pull back frequency. Wonder how it will go when winter draws close?

I'm feeling a cold coming on. Hopefully after a good nights sleep I'll be feeling fine. If so, I'll be there. Don't wait for me though, I may well be a no show. Have a great ride regardless.

Good, but hard, ride this Sunday. Thanks John and Andrew for the good company. We started out at 6 as a three man ride, then picked up another 2 in the park. Then met up with Eleri and the 25s at the servo, so had a good bunch to make for an easier return home.

I'll be back for more at 6am on the 21st, after seeing Andrew fly up the hills I realise I'm still in need of some last minute Fitz work.
Either that or get my EPO regimen going.

Good to see a few DHBC'ers in the RNP early bright and early on a Sunday morning.

David Os and I were the two DHBC dawdlers you guys picked up in the park.

We were expecting to see you coming the other way and we were surprised to have you catch us from behind.

Thanks for waiting at the top of the Audley Hill. I was a bit cautious descending down a wet Artillery hill before the last climb. The throbbing head from the boozy dinner the night before didn't help!

I have my kids birthday party to survive next Sunday but I should be there the following week.

I'm having a ridiculous notion to carry on through the park this Sunday and do "The Wall". If I do, then I think I'll turn around at the top and then retrace the route back through the park. Any takers?

I may also chicken out. It's so easy making plans from the comfort of the couch.

I'm keen to venture into RNP but I might need you to put another brick in 'the wall' - without me.

I need to be back at a reasonable hour (and with some energy) to feign enthusiasm for a birthday party.

Hopefully everyone made it through the Park all right this morning - Police fear oil deliberately spilt onto the road causing 3 cars to crash (Saturday 20th Oct 2012)
Something to watch out for.

Well, the police seem to have put so much sand down it was like a beach – and without knowing about the oil we all speculated what might have happened. I suggested a king tide, but nobody went for that theory, strangely enough.

Quite a few motorbikes stopped in that area - I asked them if all ok, and they said they were just having a coffee... as you do... but then again, we were going uphill (from Audley), probably a bit more technical coming the other way with the descent.

A good roll-up of 7 this morning for the now well embedded RNP ride. John H, Ben, James, Anthony K, Phillip, me and Matt from Kooragang CC kept a nice pace up to Audley and then dived in to the Park. The sand was a bit confusing when we came upon that, mostly because of the motorcycles. We were pootling along at that point so it was no real drama. I was worried about getting dirty sand on my bike, but perhaps the least of our worries.

Phillip invented a great idea to do "the Wall". What felt good on the couch became real when Anthony joined in the fun. We said good-bye to them at the turn off to climb up to Waterfall. Their fate is, as yet, unknown.

Most of us got passed by a kid of about 12 on a bike that was mostly wheels - he could have ridden my bike. He's a good rider now and definitely has a cycling future ahead of him. His dad, on the other hand, got passed by all of us.

Fast, smooth paceline back to the servo where we came in just behind the 25s. Then back to Marrickville battling a headwind along the beach. All up we averaged somewhere around 28.5kph. I'm seeing PRs on everyone's Strava as they load them.

At the top of Artillery Hill - thanks James for the photo.

That was me you all passed on West Botany St this morning.
Oh, and good to know there is more to Kooragang than swamps, coal loaders, explosives and that lonely wind turbine.

Anthony and I both survived our pilgrimage to "The Wall". Thanks go out to Anthony, I'd have surely chickened out if he wasn't keen. The Wall was as tough as I remembered it, you know you're in trouble when the 12% bits are the easy sections. The reverse is steeper with a few 19% pieces but its much shorter so somehow easier.

The oil spill was no drama on the return as the area was completely speed controlled by police while a work crew cleaned up the mess.

Very glad I did the extra KMs, I feel a little better about Fitz now.

What a beautiful morning to take a trip thought the park, up the wall, down the wall and back through the park.
Actually it was hard work ..... but satisfying.
Big thanks to Philip for having what seemed like a good idea while sitting on the couch and then taking me along for the journey.
Also thanks to all of the crew who waited patiently for me to put put put up the hills.

Yep. Another good ride. If you're killing the 28s and finding the middies a bit ho hum, come and join us next week.

You don't exactly stretch your descending and climbing skills only doing Waterfall.

A good turnout this morning - I was expecting four and there were eight of us that started and finished together.

I would describe it as fast middies pace - average speed for the 91kms was 30kph. We went in at Audley and out at Waterfall.

A glorious day out - the decents into the park were sublime with relatively little traffic. We saw some fasties coming down the other way from Waterfall.

No near misses that I'm aware of - and a good fast paceline back from Waterfall. No mechanicals and the calls up and down the bunch were ok.

There are some very strong riders knocking on the door of graduating to the fasties - I'm not one of them. My climbing speeds are way too slow. I could shave off a kilo on the bike if I wanted to spend $100s of dollars - or I could shave off 5 kilos off my body if I just ate less chocolate.

I'll be an apology next week but let's be careful out there. See you on the road.

On Sunday 7 April I propose the following ride for those that wish to join me:

Start time: 5:30am (yes that's early but it's also the end of daylight saving. It will feel just like 6:30).
Starting Place: Marrickville road cafe as normal
Destination/ Route: Audley in, then to Stanwell Tops (where the hang gliders launch), ten minutes to eat your banana and for photo opportunity, and back through RNP, out at Waterfall for a fast pace line home.
Pace: middies or faster (Dinnerville crew- this one's for you)
Start list:

Anna's long and unwavering support over the past 2 years of riding will this Sunday be paid back in the form of support crew duties for her own sporting endurance event. So I'll be a no show on the 7th. Will be keen on future dates though. I need to get over my dislike of the pace line. Good luck out there.

Chaps,

At this stage there are a few storms off the coast but my bet is that the weather still looks ok for our ride tomorrow.

However if it's raining I'll be a no show at 5:30am, and either reconsider a run to Waterfall at 6:30am or bail altogether.

Please bring your licence and ensure that you have working front and rear lights. And just like the marines, no-one gets left behind.

Yep, another good workout.

Nine of us rolled out at 5:30 or so, including Jonathan who forgot about daylight saving ending. Instead of going back to bed he came with us and did an admirable job of hanging on until midway through RNP. Lizanne also sprung up from nowhere at Wolli Creek to join us the whole way and was very strong on the front.

Vital stats:
Distance: 112 kms
Time: 3hrs 52 mins
Avg Speed: 30.5kms
Top speed: 98.6kms

RNP was a bit wet and we passed a bunch on the way down with a rider nursing some injuries at the side of the road - apparently oil on the road but it didn't seem too catastrophic.

Gorgeous scenery in RNP on the way down - blanketed in fog on the lower reaches. Very strong climbing from everyone, especially John Mason.

Stanwell Tops was a real sight with storm cells only a few miles of the coast. I took a few photos but don't know how to upload them. Lizanne was the only one brave enough to sample the devil's brew ('coffee') sold by the ice cream van - not good.

The run home was fast and furious, especially the paceline back and the mad mile sprint - well done Phil and Noel.

We managed to outrun the rain until a few drops at the cafe.

I'll be in rainy Bangalow next week. Have a good one - and stay safe.

Cheers,

I'm just doing Waterfall tomorrow. I've been away and off the bike for a couple of weeks (and put on weight).

But I'm thinking of organising a ride on Anzac Day if there's any interest - maybe 150kms or so - possibly to Austinmer and back. Will post later if the family permits me to proceed.

Not that I'm coming, but now we have fast and slow middies? Things are getting confusing.

Haha. We'll start with everyone, will likely get dropped on the Kingsway climb (speaking for myself), and then will just make our own through the park... Wanna come?

Nice ride yesterday. Thanks for the photos James.

It didn't feel like a particularly fast ride. The average speed for the 92kms was 30.4 km/h.

I think we were stopped by more red lights on the way out than any other ride I can remember.

Given mother's day is next Sunday, as a replacement I will probably plan a ride at 6am on Saturday - may just be a fast Waterfall / return ride for those who want to join me.

John
