2010 started with a bang after holding out just 1 single flat in 2009.

First ride in 2010 and got hit by a front flat, all within striking distance of the Waterfall turn around. A nice shard of glass retrieved from the tyre. Then tonight, patched the punctured tube and while in the process of putting the old tube back, the new tube on the wheel was found to have a broken valve core. So it's bin the new and back with the old. 2.5 points in one go.

So if you "borrow" a tube from you boyfriend (or significant other), does the same tube returning rates and penalties apply?

Of course, we don't discriminate on relationship status, only gender

I have no idea how it happened but I went to pump my tires up last night before this mornings ride and I had a front flat. Checked the tube, no air but when I took it out and pumped it up it stayed inflated...weird. So I checked the tire, nothing hmm so I changed the tube anyway.

Ok, so someone may be able to work out what my score is from this story...

My track bike had no tyres on the wheels as I'd pilfered them for the road bike. Patched two punctures as all my tubes have holes in them and went to put them on the bike with some old tyres before training tonight. Couldn't get the tyres on as my thumb is too weak since breaking it. Take the whole lot down to track and have Alex roll the tyre onto the wheel. Alex starts pumping and it gets a pinch flat - we have no levers so use the ones in the track toolbox. I don't have any more spare tyres. Borrow one from Christian. I get both tyres to the point where it needs the last bit rolled on and get Lindsay finish it off. I do all the pumping at this point.

Othy, as you have a broken thumb, we could make you an honorary female for the duration of the period while the thumb is broken, so lets go thru the score

*****Basic Points
Get flat tyre
0 - male
1 - female
That would be 2 points, however as the front wheel would of hit the taxi before your thumb, we will have to classify you as a male for the front wheel and a female for the second flat, so that's 1 point
Repair Own flat tyre
1 - male
1 - female
As you didn't repair your own flat, that's 0 points

*****Bonus points
Patching own tube
0.5 points * 2 = 1 point, so your up to 2 points

*****Penalty Points
Someone else repairs your flat and Lindsay repairs flat. As you are classified as an honorary female and you are not Camilla, Joanne, Jessica, Amy or Victoria, you get zero penalty
Pinch Flat
- 0.5 points, that takes you down to 1.5 points

*****Purchased points
As no money has been received, no bonus points can be allocated

So that makes it 1.5 points for you and 0.5 points for Christan. However if you don't return the tube within 14 days, you will loose an additional 0.5 points

Hrmmm, I don't really understand what you're daying here Mike...
Of course, we don't discriminate on relationship status, only gender
...so I've been a little hesitant to score my situiation.

I got my track bike out of the car last week and discovered it had a flat. I borrowed a random velocity wheel to get me through training that night. I utilised one of Simon's tubes to swap with my flat one and am adding it to the "to patch" box.

Now, thus far I see myself on two points, with no penalty and will accrew a further 1/2 point upon tube repair.

I had a total of eight flats during the tour de Disneyland. One on 25th Dec, and seven on 1st Jan 2010 (that too within the first 65km of the 200km stage from Launceston to Bicheno).

Image

This tiny shard of glass was responsible for two flats. It was so tiny that it escaped undetected when I inspected the tire first time.

I start the year with a bang, flat last night on the way home, no spare, so walked the last part of it. Patched last night, new tube in this morning, lasted all of about 1km, when it went off, it blew the bead off the tyre, so the tyre is a write off as well.

- 0.5 for first flat
- 0.5 for patching
- 0.5 for second flat

If we get 0.5 points for patching, then it should be 2.5 points. I patched 5 tubes that night.

Did you puncture all 5 tubes this year? Or are they carry overs from past decades?

Well done Jess, you deducted the 1/2 point penalty for getting Lindsay to change your tube.

I'll have to think of ways of making the 2011 comp more complicated.

I patched them this year, when I got the flats is irrelevant.

Maybe I will become a scab this year, and pick up tubes that others are going to throw away so I can patch them. Easy way to get points...

I'll update a few people here. On the 3 day tour I got one flat, Victoria got 3 where I changed two of them, Camilla got two where I changed both of them. If you want to clock up some points just go on a tour and fix flats for other people.

Actually according to the rules I think I should be on 3 points. +3 for getting the flats, +1 for changing one myself and -1 for Christian changing two of them.

Better patch those tubes to score some extras...

Blatant sexual discrimination.

I'm wondering if Jessica's points are out by 1/2 a point, as there's a special penalty for the sporty females

After failing to score a single point in 2009 due to having Gatorskin tyres and only doing about 3000k's a year, I've rocketed into the charts. Feel free to correct these as It's so confusing with all the plus and minus and girls and boys and ....

Sat Slowies: lent new rider Lou (fem) a tube and changed her flat - 1 point?
Sun Crusiers: changed Ted's flat for him (he had tube but no pump) but had help from Michael (don't know his last name - one of the seemingly endless Michael's - long time club member). I took the wheel and tyre off and pulled out the tube; Michael inserted new tube and pumped the tyre & I put the wheel back in - do I get any points for this? .25 maybe? I haven't claimed any.

If anyone is silly enough to pay real $$$ for points in this competition, then they well deserved to "win" the competition. Sounds quite appropriate to me.

Or maybe you should read it all first.

It's all about figuring out how to win. Jimmy has found a hole in the rules and is doing a magnificent job of exploiting it. Eventually he will run out of tube and/or patches and then you'll trump him as he's on a half point handicap.

I've got around 10 tubes to patch, so i should get started.

How many points do i get for patching a tubeless clincher?? you get points for tubes and singles, so surely you can't discriminate against tubeless.

Took another look, seems as though it'll be 1 point, but no bonus points, as according to the rules, Repair own flat tire = 1 point for males.

Please, please people - this is Australia and the word is spelt tyre NOT tire!
Edit: and if you're using Firefox then you can download an Australian spell checker here >> https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3099

Then right click in the message body window and click on languages and select Australia - say NO to yank spelling.

Could be a long walk home

Some of the rule changes have been to encourage responsibility and environmental friendless. I chucked a tube the other day that could of been patched and afterwards I thought... "dam that tube was worth a 1/2 point" :D

whoops

didn't see that rule about not carrying the correct stuff.

When I flatted the other week, I wasn't carrying a spare tube, but I did have tyre levers and a puncture repair kit, but I decided to walk it anyway. Is that a penalty?

The next morning, I did have a spare tube, but the tyre got destroyed. I wasn't carrying a tyre, so is that a penalty?

Flatted on the M5 this morning. There's so much glass and metal on the road.

Another rear flat on the fixie. Once again it went flat after I got home. Cause a small piece of green glass. Saved the tube, if I'm in the running near the end of the year, I might do some patching

Ran over a bike on the velodrome at about 50kph, pinch flat in front, not the best way to earn another half point.

Two flats on Sunday. I kind of fixed some of it, but Christian is so much faster at it.. Do I get any points for half fixing my own flats?

I'll take that as a no.

So I get 2 points for getting the 2 flats, but I will have to deduct one of those since I was not carrying a pump on the ride. Slackeerrrr.

Btw, both the flats were due to shitty rim tape on the wheels.

Flat on Sunday on the way back to Sutherland station. Think i ran over glass and must have been a sign to stop riding for the day.

Was that for you or for the whole group?

To make that meaningful, it should only register punctures through the tyre. Flats due to tube damage by other sources should be excluded from that count.

Honestly? Not really. Because I was standing there with my hands on my hips half the time, and in my head a voice was saying "You know Victoria, you could really be doing this yourself"... But another voice was fighting back "But he's nearly finished it... He can do it without any levers... You'll just take half an hour"

My efforts of removing the tube on the first flat and putting air in the second aren't really worth much at all.

I gave a class on patching tubes where I assisted and supervised my pupil in this task. Said pupil kind-of repaired 3 of my tubes. What does this mean for the points tally??? Are the points mine if I was the tutor?

Perhaps we should build that into the 2011 rules, I'm always looking for ways to make the competition more complicated, so we can argue, um I mean have healthy debate.

Now lets look at the rules...
**********************************************************
*
* Bonus Points
*
**********************************************************
Patch your own tube
1/2

So you don't get any as it says you have to patch it yourself.

Now what about penalty points, when someone does it for you...
**********************************************************
*
* Penalty Points
*
**********************************************************
<nuff'n>

Looks like your in luck, no penalty points, cos I didn't think of that one, will have to pad up the rules in 2011 :)

Never mind, after I've solved world peace, I'll prefect the points system for the flat tyre comp

Hrmmm, I held utensils pre-glue stage, demonstrated how to remove the selofane backing, then fixed this situation on all 3, then added extra glue adhesive to demonstrate just how stuck down it needs to be. And the tubes and patches were my own.

How about bonus points for lessons? If anyone else needs classes...

So the points for repairing someone elses flat are only for when you replace tubes for other DHBC riders?

I'll stop offering to assist in that case. I repaired a girls flat this morning thinking it might earn me some points!

Flat tyre yesterday morning, pouring rain, while in the middle of the Anzac bridge bikeway. Worst change experience ever, made a bit more bearable by the new Lezyne road drive pump (had to get one after using T-bones last year). Traffic was at a near standstill so I imagine a few drivers got some amusement from the comfort of their cages. Perhaps there needs to be a wet bonus....

Good reason why one should always carry two I suppose

Not my week so far. Flat on the fixie yesterday due to glass. Flat on the tourer today - cause remains a mystery. Concerns me the amount of flats I have had on touring bikes considering I leave for Tassie on Friday... Perhaps I am jinxed?

Fixed both myself (Christian wasn't there this time...), and even patched and re-used the same tube for the tourer.

Two flats today. One in the morning (but discovered in the afternoon) and one in the afternoon again. One front, one rear... What a week.

Rim tape has now been replaced on the touring bike which will hopefully mean some flat free riding...

Fixed one myself, the other one happened to be just as I pulled up to Stanmore cycles to purchase a chainring and Bob kindly changed that one for me.

OK, after 2 - 4000 km for the year so far (maybe more), i had my first flat :D which i was preparidly under prepared for, leaving every thing at home :D but making sure Anthony was stocked up :D he is now my source for every thing :D

I started by borrowing a tube off anthony, which i dont plan on returning,so thats up to one point :D We have made arrangements that dont require me giving him tubes, but hes still happy enough :D I didnt bring a spanner or the like for my fixie either, which makes it a slight miracle that this some how worked, as he doesnt ride a fixie, im assuming he was carrying that too :D

I was wearing white today, and didnt want to get dirty, if you saw how dirty my bike is, even touching the seat was making my clothes messy, so in turn got anthony to change the tube too. Im not that good at those mechanical things any way, and the lads we were with were impatient and we needed a mechanical expert like anthony on the job :D

Michelle from SSCG got 2 flats on the Adventure ride. I fixed the first one and Weiyun fixed the second one, using a patch, however you only get points for patching your own tube. So points from that are

Got another flat on the fixie rear on Monday. If you exclude the pinch flat I got on the track bike, all of my flats this year have been from the same wheel on the same bike. Thinking about putting a tyre liner in that wheel

I have 4 flat tyres to claim. Two were on the Tassie tour. The first one just went flat fortunately for me just before we headed down a very big hill. Less fortunately for Huw who rode back up the hill to find out what had happend to me but Stretch had helped me fix it. The other one just went flat and Geoff S fixed it.

Back in Sydney I found a flat in the pm check before an early ride - it was probably a spoke poked through the rim so I taped the rim and replaced the tube. Pinched the tube, replaced it with a poorly patched tube that wouldn't inflate. Swore lots. Successfully replaced that, by now sweating and very late. Next morning, ran over something near Cronulla and the whole thing went bang, now a small hole in the tyre. Replaced the tube, reinforced the tyre with plastic insert to get by. Now have a new kevlar tyre and new tube (on the bike I was going to spend no more $$ on). Patched one tube along the way.

Given that I'm not a named female :D then I reckon I get 4 points for the flats, Stretch gets 1 and Geoff S gets 1. I lose 1 for the failed patch and 1/2 for the pinch, but get 1/2 for the one I properly patched.

One to me on my way to Waterfall. Does Micklan get 0.5 points for helping change it?
