Ok people, I have been told that instead of buying actual brand name goo's etc, we can just buy the multidextrose and what ever else, and make our own, costing about 6 cents instead of 2 dollars (at cost, more for retail?!).

I haven't totally looked into it all yet, but thought I would see who is interested, I hear you can buy in bulk from a home brew shop, and even cheaper off the net.

....... you know this is "HOW" it all starts. A couple of budding chemists just mixing up some "goo's", then one says to the other "if we just mix in these Codrals we'll go faster". I have seen pictures of these "Goo Labs" on Billboards. If i hear a massive explosion one night down Marrickville way, I'll know that the Goose has been cooked.

lol Douggie!! yeah it is a dangerous game, see my earlier thread on the lad and his move into illegal cycling habits!!

I have found a source of hammer gels at cost ozzy cost (I am not sure if that is cheaper than a dollar or not, it may still be more expensive than what you get), but this is a heap cheaper for my uni student life style.

James F is the one I am probably going to get the cheapest bulk buy website from for the Maltodextrin.

ok Here is a simple idea of ways to make it, I hear there are a heap of options, I hear that different forms of malt in there can give different types of energy for different times in long races (we are doing a mid length triathlon called a "half Ironman"), which requires a bit of this stuff along the way!
Here's a recipe for the gel.

It has actually come from IronmanOZ OzChat website
if you want to read the original thread. But the ironmanoz website is down at present.

It is similar to (what's commercially known as) Gu, and is far cheaper. It has been named (rather flippantly) Gu+.

--------------------------

GU+ recipe

You need
- Polyjoule or Polycose powder (aka Maltodextrin) (found at your local chemist, mine is ChemMart)
- Gastrolyte sachets (ChemMart again)
- Red cordial (Cottee's works for me, choose your own flavour)
- water
- mixing bowl
- fork/whisk to mix it
- squeeze tube (or similar) for the gel

Mix about 1.5 cups of polycose/polyjoule, 1 sachet of gastrolyte, and lastly add a generous amount of red cordial (enough to turn the powder into a gel, maybe 1/2 to 1 cup). Mix the ingredients for a minute of so. Depending on the consistency of the gel required, add small amount of water (no more than 1/2 cup) to get a 'runnier' gel.

Gu+ will probably be cloudy when freshly whisked. Importantly, let the gel settle overnight in the fridge in the bowl (with glad wrap over the top) to allow the polycose/polyjoule to dissolve fully. It will turn from a cloudy liquid to a more transparent red consistency.

Decant into squeezy tube before use.

No need to use Gastrolyte sachets. Just use normal table salt, diet salt, and citric acid, to get the sodium, potassium, and citrate. Normal sugar for a bit of sweetness to balance the maltodextrin. Then just some flavouring if you want, though the citric acid gives it a bit of a citrus taste.

I only mix up my own sports drink mix, though i've been a bit lazy lately.

A (different) James answer: looks almost as fun as making homebrew... almost... similar ingredients, at least. I'd rather make beer than gel – but I have long considered making a super-sports beer. One day.

You can get 1kg of maltodextrin (aka powdered corn syrup or wheat) from a homebrew shop for about $6-10. You can buy 25kg of maltodextrin for somewhere between $85-$100. You'll also see stuff on Ebay for ultra-bargain prices – I'd strongly suggest avoiding it, as there has been some evidence of counterfeit [beer] ingredients (yes, believe it or not).

I ride past Dave's Hombrew in North Sydney everyday... mmm... such temptation. He's very helpful, and can source bulk ingredients fairly readily. He lists a kilo of maltodextrin for $9.60.

Mark's Homebrew (yes, naming of homebrew shops is very creative) list a 25kg bag for $86.

A more sports orientated source is Bulk Nutrients ($19/4kg). Call me old-fashioned, but I'd buy from a home-brew shop first.

I would be more interested in a group kitchen gathering to make some energy bars. Surely solids are better for us?

depends when you want to eat them, it takes a longer ride to need solid. I will need energy bars for my longer triathlon race I am guessing. Do you know what would go into them? I would be up for a cook off, maybe Lizanne would be a good person to add into the mix
