Marrickville Cycling Club Old Trophy Search

Hi All,

I received this email last week:

"Hi,

My grandfather was James "Jerry" Gould who was the captain of the Marrickville Bicycle Club Road Racing team for at least the 1928-29 season when they were road premiers. I have been emailed a photo from my uncle showing the 5 man team (B. McWhirter, J. Gould, R.J. Ley, H. Pethybridge and C.J. Bonner) with a couple of bicycles and what looks like a perpetual trophy/shield.

I have contacted Cycling NSW who suggested I contact you folks as Marrickville merged with DHBC some time ago. I wonder do you know the whereabouts of any of the old trophies from this era as I am very interested in having a look at these. I live in Canberra but grew up in Sydney and still visit regularly. I can be contacted by email which I have access to during the week.

Cheers, Tony"

Can anyone help?

I dont mean to be flippant, but one can genuinely try Al Sumner's shop, probably under one of his many piles of inventory.

The trophy is the Dunlop Interclub perpetual trophy sponsored by Dunlop from 1902 to 1940, with other sponsors from 1941 onwards. You'll all be pleased to note that Dulwich Hill won this event once (in 1920) in 100 years of racing....

Marrickville won the Dunlop Interclub every year from 1928 to 1933. I suspect the photo mentioned probably dates from 1929 when Marrickville's team of McWhirter, Gould, Ley, Pethybridge and Bonner beat Enfield-Burwood. A report on the race is here. It was a 30-mile team time trial, 3 laps of a course along Liverpool Road, from Wallis Ave Enfield to Bass Hill and return.

Where's the trophy? Well, who knows? Marrickville club won it in 1940, when a new sponsor took over. I suspect it is probably still in private hands. So Al's shop would probably be a good place to start looking. The Speedwell Challenge Trophy Shield (another club trophy from from 1937) makes periodic appearances on eBay for about $6,000.

Now, about that photo?

Hi,

It was me who sent the email, and the photo is this one:

Image

James Lay (J.L.) "Jerry" Gould was my mum's father.

I've found a bit of information through the Trove website, and some other information on another forum, but just thought that you folks at DHBC might have inherited some of the old property of the Marrickville club.

I have several other tidbits from Pa, who I still miss dearly, but I was just trying to spread my feelers a little further and wider.

Thanks,

Tony Maxwell

Lovely photo Tony. I'll talk to Al Sumner the next time I see him. See if he knows anything.

I am brand new to this forum but noticed a query regarding Jerry Gould. Jerry was the brother of Frank Gould who was a great mate with my father Jim Leedham. Frank was also an Australian Champion but his career was severely disrupted by WW2. I have a number of articles from Frank about both his career and that of his brother Jerry. Frank turned 98 in May this year after only recently handed in his driver's licence, he only drove a manual car.
If anyone would like more details just contact me and I will be happy to oblige.
Oh and by the way I also used to race with Canterbury Amateurs back in the 1950's.
