I have the opportunity to get a fairly discounted Yeti ASR-SL frame.

The opportunity also exists to get a discounted GT hardtail which I can use for components (SLX, Recon fork and Mavic Crossrides). The frame is still pretty nice, so I can pull the components off my Giant so I still have a hard tail or I can sell it off on ebay (and maybe upgrade forks with some of the proceeds).

Should I do it?

The thing holding me back is that SLX isn't XT, but that may be me being overly picky and wanting something for the name rather than what benefits of differences I will notice. The Recon fork isn't as nice as the Reba I'm currently using (which isn't mine), so an upgrade at some point would be good. I would like a Fox.

I have to decide by tomorrow, or the ASR frame will not be mine. I don't think I'm going to be able to sleep tonight...

Is this the aluminium one on special at CBD?

The ASR-SL is a beautiful frame. I still have withdrawal symptoms from not being able to look at my old 575 before bed every night. Does the frame come with an RP3 or RP23 rear shock?

I'm not to sure if the performance of the recon fork will match the calibre of the frame, but it's a good start.

Should you do it?.....Can't tell you my $0.02 without knowing the price.

Yep, this is the one.

They have one left at the distributor in my size. It's pink, BUT I can have it sprayed black (well any colour I like, but I think I would go gloss black) and there just so happens to be some custom turquoise Yeti stickers that can go on it too.

I believe the rear is an RP23.

What did you do with your 575?

Check your pm's.

As someone who knows nothing about mountain bikes - Yeti's are hot. Do it.

I sold it about a year ago...It wasn't getting enough use anymore.
It paid for a trip to Cuba though :P

I know Tim, they are totally hot. I can only hope that I will look hot riding one.

Well John I am thinking about selling things to fund the Yeti purchase, not the other way around. I have some turntables and a drum kit sitting in the 'past hobbies' corner of the room. Is there a bike obesession honey moon period? Is it too early to assume that I won't be going back to my pre-cycling life?

Frame ordered!

I get to see it tomorrow in all of its pink glory before it's sent off to Star Enamellers.

The guys in the shop are trying to convince me to keep the pink and are hoping I change my mind tomorrow when I see it... No chance! I think I'll take some pre-stealth job photos.

<envy>Yeti ASR-SL</envy>

By all accounts there's nothing wrong with SLX as far as performance goes, but I can see why you'd prefer XT on a Yeti.

I think I would only ride a pink bike if I was a guy and I was super fast. That would be funny.

Then again I did ride a pink bike down at the track for a number of months, until I upgraded to Teschner stealth :D

I agree, keep it pink. Also, let me save you the trouble in future - when it comes to thinking about buying more bikes, the answer is always yes.

btw, that's me who keeps bumping into you around centennial. in case you didn't recognise me and thought I was some weirdo saying hi.

Well the frame arrived at the shop on Friday afternoon...

Image

Oh yes, it is very pink.

It's off to get stealthified on Monday. It seems just about everyone wants to see me riding a pink bike though... So much so that I get a further discount if I don't spray it?! Really, I just don't think I could bring myself to ride pink.

Rhys - I knew it was you! Otherwise I would not be so friendly... Haha.

Victoria - I don't want you to ride a pink bike, especially one that shade of pink. Nothing ironic to be had there! what were they thinking?

I love it! Also you will not get to enjoy riding it for months, even if Peter Flemming promises it will only be 3 weeks, he really means 3 months, though this does mean the quality will be compromised (just ask sparkles!). It's up to you, though if I were you, I'l enjoy it pink and after it's chipped and or scratched, themn i'd stealth-a-fy it :)

..Yes definately a spray job needed! Dulwich Hill blood red with sparkles...now that's hot. I'm not sure I could ride a pink bike?

Jess - I'm kind of hoping he gives some kind of priority service to the bike shop, since it's being sent through them and not me. Although, was that how yours was done? Lucky I have a bike to ride in the mean time!

If I go for red sparkles then I don't think I'll be seeing the frame sprayed for a year! Lol... Thanks for the voice of sanity Eleri and Joanne!

Perhaps I can get some red bling for her one day... Like some of these ;)

Think I need to take less than 8hrs to complete a 100km ride before I could justify that :?

I would advise against getting it painted. Here's my 00.02c worth. You'll find that there has been a heat treating process in the production of your frame and the coating (pink paint) and heat treatment will be matched to the alloy to produce a final result. The coating plus final stage heat treatment will make a change to the molecular structure of the alloy, this is called "aging". I think with alloy frames you shouldn't go past this point.

Adrian E had the idea to repaint his Apollo track frame from it's stock blue to something else & I asked Rob Small (Theo's Dad) who is a metallurgist what he thought. Not a good idea was his reply, for the above reason.

If it must happen I'd proceed with much caution. I'd be taking a crash course in alloys. Either that or learn to love the pink. Perhaps you could call it the pink panther?

Love the pink Victoria! You're man enough.

Might require a wardrobe re-think of course...

Too late! She is already off to the painters...

Lindsay wouldn't that only apply if they heat treated the frame during the re-painting process? I don't believe they do.

Aluminium age hardening is quite a complex concept. Most modern aluminium alloys are pre aged hardened now to prevent that change of the material properties during service.
In simple terms chances are with a new frame like that changing the paint have very little impact on the "strength" of the frame.

Plenty of alu frames get re-sprayed and the changes in the alloy (if any) is probably inconsequential unless the rider is a 200lb gorilla (a long way to go for Orphic). So I think the key technical question really is, will the repaint job be as good as the factory paint job? Will the pulling apart of all the components for the repaint will degrade the frame following reassembly. As we know, reassembled machines often tend not to fit as tightly and nicely as when it was first put together in the factory.

As far as I'm aware aluminium frames are not heat treated after they are welded due to the fact they would have to be heat treated ina jig to stop them going out of shape. Aluminium frames cannot be cold set.

As for dismantling the frame and putting it back together, its just the swing arm bearings as its not a complete bike. I've seen plenty of stuff come out of factories not put togther all that well. So there is almost no chance that it will be put togther any worse then when it left the factory.

If you take the time to assemble a bike properly it will almost always be better than a factory built bike. Taking the time to do things like tapping and facing all threads, all those small things which would never normally be done in a factory can produce a perfect bike build.

Which category of factory would you classify Yeti's production line?

Since you are in the post-apocalypse age, you really don't need to know the meaning nor significance of "200lb" to the pre-apocalypse civilization.

I didn't realise how long I have actually been waiting for this frame. I want her now :(

And to think I could have been riding her around in all her pink glory for two months...

Oh I was just going to post in here saying 'I know nobody really cares but...'. I'm glad you care, Anthony.

The bike is nearly all together. An evening of bike building and beer drinking (ok so I drank beer and had little to do with the actual building) was spent last night and providing my rear wheel shows up I'll be riding her home today! She's looking pretty hot. Awesome paint job on the frame, better than factory if you ask me. Oh and the wheels are ridiculously hot. Possibly overkill, but hot.

Depending on how late I get her, I might have to ride straight to the track so you can have a sneak preview if you're there. I'll have to find some stuff to ride over on the way ;)

AAAHhhh! gah! I can't come to track tonight, I'm going Mumford and Sons at the Enmore! WOOO! But I want a look see! Haha, I love bikes and beer drinking nights - it's why my fixie took so long :P I'm pricing up XX kit for the hardtail, so we should be able to go for a ride on shiny new steeds together! :D

When do we get to see pics of your frame? I am starting to think this thing doesn't actually exist ;)

I completely forgot I ever posted that. I have those wheels on it now, how funny. They were second hand and at a bargain price, so I think I can be excused from being slow on them? ;)
