Hey folks, The Mont is on again in Kowen Forest and this teams event is going to be epic!

There are 4s - Male, Female, Mixed and Singlespeed, 6s M/F/Mixed and Brady Bunches.

Deets on www.mont24.com.au

Some of my riding buddies have proposed Drinking 6s - with a beer a lap and a shot on the second night lap (Mark D, the culprit that suggested this rule is notorious for not going out on a second night lap, but nonetheless I like the concept).

Any takers on serious? drinking?

Whoever I race with, it'd be excellent to get DHBC alongside ZeroFive Rhino Racing (Mark C's sporting apparel team)

I'm in. Are you saying you are riding in the drinking 6s or you want to ride seriously Anthony?

I want to race for serious. Mixed four?

So this is my training plan to get faster before the Mont:

Motorpace, ride a sh!t load of hills, race, ride a sh!t load more hills, race, race, race, find a hill and ride it x 10000, race, race and do some more motorpace.

:D

Its almost full, so if anyone else is thinking of putting in a team you better move fast. "DHBC can't turn right" has been entered, consisting of Victoria, John, Anthony and myself in the mixed fours category.

I think I'll be taking my lights to NZ in case I want to get some night riding in, but I'll let you know if that changes.

Let me know if you guys are doing any training rides before then, I would be keen to join. Am off doing some riding out West this weekend though.

Oh I also have a tent that anyone can borrow if they like. It's a 4 man one that I bought before the Fling. Too big to cart around on a bike :)

Apparently it's really not technical at all. Reports a month or so ago back was that parts of it needed bedding in pretty badly but that may have changed by now - and will certainly change once you get a few hundred people though there, so your lap times should get faster as the night goes on!

What bike are you riding Alex?

Hope you all have a blast. Make sure you take some warm clothes etc as it'll be getting pretty cold down there by now. Pretty jealous that I'm not riding but just couldn't do that as well as NZ... I guess I'll be freezing my arse off in Christchurch while you guys are freezing yours off in Canberra.

Btw, does someone owe me money for my entry? :)

That post makes it look like there were only 21 teams, there was 195 teams in out category so 13th is pretty good. I was going top be happy with a top 20 finish.

All of us except John went down on the Friday, we didn't get there till after 7pm and the place was almost completely camped out. We managed to get a good spot that had been mowed for another team who failed to mark out their spot. It turns out they had enough room anyway.

The race didn't start till midday so Alex and myself managed to get a lap in before the race to check out the track. John was nominated as our starter so he had to do the 500m run. The track was super dusty, I think we going to be coughing up dirt balls all week. The course was about 16km long with hardly any steep climbing, it was pretty tight in places which really limited how much speed you could carry through the corners. As a lot of the course was single track you found yourself getting stuck in traffic a lot. We rode single laps up until around 11pm then it was time for doubles so you could get a decent chunk of sleep.

Riding in the dark isn't usually too much of a challenge, but when its dusty your visibility is reduced because your lights just illuminate the dust cloud caused by the other riders. Luckily there is less traffic at night as some people are just soft.

It started raining on Alex's second lap of his double, at least the sun had come up by then. As the track was dusty at the start it very quickly turned to mud and was quite slippery. Whilst Alex was out on his lap we made the executive decision not to pull the pin and to ride though the rain, Alex was not happy that we made this decision without him.

Congrats to Alex as this was his first mountain bike race and we only had the chance to get him on the bike once before the race. His last lap was epic, the track was a mess for my last lap it would have been slightly worse for him. I decided to bury myself on my last lap to make sure Alex got his last lap of mud in.

Overall we are pretty happy with the result. The male fours category is the most competitive category at this race.

Some photos should be up soon.

You're story only confirms that I am soft and I will stick to less muddy endevours like inside the velodrome.
Awesome effort guys, admittedly it really does sound like fun, regardless of the crappy conditions.

These are the best photos I've seen posted on the dhbc forum.

Can you ever get your bike properly cleaned after an event like that? I would have thought some of the grit would be too ingrained...

How did the hardtail bike compared to the full suspended ones?

I haven't cleaned it yet, just hosed the mud off. I think I'll be taking all the pivot bolts out to clean it properly. May take a few hours.

Looks like you guys had a blast! Would probably have been a good event to be riding SS.

Good to see there were no broken ribs, fingers or helmets this time...
