Not sure if this is officially vintage but being a much admired bike of my teens, it must at least be retro.

So I picked up one of these bad boys having spied it sitting forlornly in a neighbour's yard and making an offer they couldn't refuse (you'll get rid of it? For free? Awesome)

To my eye it look rather original, but my eye for such things is probably rubbish- 105 brakes, sun tour shifters, Shimano 200gs rear deraileur, alloy Shimano hubs. Brakes work fine. Hubs seem fine. Chain so rusty hard to turn cranks or make a call as to how rear deraileur works. It does though move from the inner to outer cluster under sufferance.

I've given it a bath, removed the foliage and dumped a heap of lube on it. What though should be my next step?

Will post pics once I'm off tapatalk, which makes posting pics a pain

Hi Greg. You should have told me about this this morning.
Repcos aren't as ordinary as people assume. They appear to have a following. In fact I saw a Repco super light at the Cycle O Rama/ Protohub Gallery a couple of weeks ago, and it was for sale for $400. A bit overpriced but gives you an indication some people in the eastern suburbs are willing to pay for the privilege. They use Tange Infinity tubing which is good quality Japanese Chromoly tubing. Not gas pipe rubbish. Important to check for rust esp in the forks. The tube walls are less than 1 mm thick so deep rust in the wrong locations is not a good thing. If you need to do repairs, be careful not to destroy or damage the decals. Hard to replace.

Does ur bike look like this? If so, nice find.

Shimano 105 is good mid range road components. The 200gs rear derailleur is MTB related. But I am sure one of the Valley wheelers may have something that is more period correct. Failing which a visit to gumtree or ebay will help. I wouldn't pay very much for a 80s or early 90s 105 RD. I'd throw away the chain and QR skewers. Get new parts - don't risk it, esp the skewers, OUCH. I suggest a nice set of Velo orange skewers. Get a nice Selle Italia Turbo style saddle and you'd be ready to go. If u want to have a bit of fun, suggest upgrading the grouppo to Shimano 600 (1980s predecessor to Ultegra). A bit more pricey but u can still get bargains if u look around. May I suggest our very own Sydney Classic Bike Show. Expecting about 20 different swap stalls on the day. As for the pedals, a nice set of modern and reliable 105 SPD pedals from Wiggle will suffice. Not period correct but practical ;)

Cheers Marc. Don't worry, there will be no lack of scope for future chats :)

Think the best first step will be getting someone clued up to eyeball it. Might waddle down the cafe with it one coming Saturday.

I dare say a crash course in bike repair and sourcing parts wouldn't go astray either

Few pics so ppl know what is being discussed

I'll bring the derailleur to Slowies tomorrow. If you can't make it, let me know so I dont lug it with me.

Any of you vintage boys got a 6 speed cluster you'd be happy to part with? Some friction levers for down tube braze ons would also be greatly appreciated. BTW I'm not expecting this to be for free........

6-speed I can do, as long as you don't mind a 14-28 Shimano. No cost and I can bring it to Slowies tomorrow.

Shifters I'm not so hopeful on. The only set I'm sure I own are slated for my 10 YO nephew's bike.

Ok, so I've pretty much stripped the frame back for respraying. Not sure the bb and crankset are in fantastic nick, so might seek replacement. Any ideas what I need to be looking for in terms of bb type/size or crankset?

It is probably a British threaded BB. Take it to your LBS to get a replacement. Bring the old BB so as to confirm the replacement needed. BB's are not a problem. What's wrong with the crankset? Hard to go wrong with a crankset, unless it's rusted through or bent. Hard to tell what the crankset is, a 105?

tis indeed an English bb.

Crankset is shimano. Not 105, but some shimano species (will confirm once I again get home). Some of the chainring teeth were looking a little worn

Greg
Go check out the Cycle Recycle Coop. They are located a short walk from the Slowies route next to Redfern St.

Bring your incomplete bike with you. I believe Oliver Cashman helps out there too. He did a few years ago. Anyway, look around for one of the organisers and ask if you can get whatever parts you need.

So progressing nicely.

Need to resolve some headset issues (bearing issues), source a new 6sp threaded cluster (at 14-28, seems to wide a spread for the rd cage, and also has some issues), and the band for the FD seems a little small for the down tube.

Headed the right direction though
