More crazy DHBC prizes over the years.
This one is from John Michell, founder and owner of 'Ashfield Cycles', Liverpool Rd, Ashfield. Local Specialized and Focus distributor and repairer.
John joined as a 'juvenile' back in 1967 or 1968, but was only recognised as a fully fledged DHBC member (according to the DHBC minute book 1954-1987) in late 1969 after becoming a 'junior'. John was a good rider in his day and won several club prizes.
The health hazards associated with smoking was already know by the late 1960s , however the word took time to filter down to the DHBC executive committee. IN 1969 some bright spark decided to present an ashtray as a prize for the Junior Road Club Champion.
