Motorcylists to park for free in Sydney
Email Printer friendly version Normal font Large font November 4, 2008 - 9:25AM

Motorcyclists and scooter riders can park in Sydney's CBD and inner-city suburbs for free from today, in a 12-month trial designed to encourage locals to leave their car at home.

Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore says the trial, decided at a City of Sydney Council meeting last night, exempts motorcycle and scooter riders from payment, but they must still park in designated areas and comply with existing time restrictions.

"More and more motorists are feeling the pinch of rising petrol prices and are switching to motorbikes and scooters which can use far less fuel and reduce congestion by taking up less space on roads," Ms Moore said in a statement.

"The Motorcycle and Scooter Strategy supports our commitment to sustainable transport options and the shift away from large, polluting vehicles to smaller vehicles to complement walking, cycling and public transport."

During the trial, motorcyclists and scooter riders will no longer need to buy or display a ticket in parking meter zones within the City of Sydney local government area, which includes the CBD, Pyrmont, Redfern, Ultimo, Darlinghurst, Paddington and Kings Cross.

They will also be able to park in the Goulburn Street parking station for only $6 a day, where rail and gear lockers will be introduced.

The new parking arrangements complement the city's existing 600 free, untimed motorcycle parking spots.

An additional 100 untimed parking spots for motorcyclists are currently being created in the north of the CBD.

A Brazilian woman was killed by her husband's coffin on the way to the cemetery to bury him, police said.

Marciana Silva Barcelos, 67, was in the front passenger seat of the hearse when the coffin slammed into her neck during a traffic accident.

She died instantly.

Her husband Josi Silveira Coimbra, 76, died of a heart attack while dancing at a party on Sunday.

The events took place in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.

The recently restored Canterbury Velodrome at Tempe hosted the staging of the historic Sydney Thousand last Sunday and came through with flying colours. The cream of Australia's best cyclists including dual Olympic and Commonwealth Games champion Ryan Bayley and three-time Tour de France sprint champion Robbie McEwen contested races on the day, along with Malayasian champions Josiah Ng and Rizal Tesin and the Danish national team. The event thrilled the largest crowd to the attend the Tempe Velodrome since the late eighties.

The feature event, the Sydney Thousand handicap event, was staged for the first time 103 years ago on the hallowed grounds of the Sydney Cricket Ground. This year's edition was won by 2005 national keirin champion Joel Leonard, who powered home over the top of Ryan Bayley in the finishing straight. Bayley looked a certain winner 200 metres from the finish, but his earlier effort in the heat took its toll, and Leonard (who started from the 20 metre mark) proved too strong in the home straight. It was the second successive win by a Victorian following Leigh Howard’s win off the 70 metre mark last year.

Steve Fitzpatrick (55 metres) took out the third placing just ahead of Justin Tomlinson of Southern Highlands (130m) with Joel Stewart of the ACT and Gavin Bates of St. George (both of 85m) also in contention.

Bayley turned the tables in the international Keirin when he sped away with one lap remaining of the 333 metre track, and won by 8 lengths from Jason Niblett. Niblett managed to hold off Mark French to claim second, and Kial Stewart was next best in fourth.

Robbie McEwen displayed some excellent track form winning the points race ahead of the in-form Stephen Rossendel and Jens-Erik Madsnm, and then went on to finish second in the Aces scratch race. McEwen was beaten in the final few metres by Adrian Hanson of Coburg, with Rossendal once again picking up a place in third.

Bankstown's Rochelle Gilmore topped the winners list for Women by taking out the women's keirin and wheelrace, but was defeated 2-0 by Kaarle McCulloch in their match race. McCulloch, who raced exceptionally well on the day, was pipped in the wheelrace on the line by Gilmore, but raced impressively in all of her events. Kate Bates, the dual Commonwealth Games champion, posted a historic win over world masters champion Keith Oliver in the battle of the sexes. Bates also won the Women’s scratch race.

The day also featured a Stars of the Future race, won by Michael Docker of Lidcombe ahead of his team mate Brendan Cole. Travis Smedley from Central Coast was third.

All riders praised the surface of the Canterbury track. The Danish world cup champions claimed a significant win in the 2000 metre teams pursuit challenge, and after the race, Dane Michael Christensen said that the facility was "world class". The Sydney Thousand came off without incident, and the promoters are planning to stage another world class event featuring cyclists and athletes in February.

Ok, this is a great story about the Nigerian scammer who got scammed himself.

One word of warning. You will need 30 mins to read the email trails, which tell this funny story. And once you start, you will not stop until you get to the end.

Very funny

I think it's for people who, either through misfortune or carelessness, have lost one or both of their ears.

It wouldn't work as a helmet, for 2 reasons:
1) After dark, you either have to take it off, or wear it backwards.
2) If you hit anything hard, your head gets sliced into pieces like a hard-boiled egg.

How many cyclists does it take to change a light bulb?

One, but first they have to create "which light bulb" thread, then after a serious amount of discussion, you wait for the $AUD to go up and then you put in your mail order, only to receive the wrong light bulb which you return and then you receive the correct light bulb, but by this time you've gone past the LLS (Local Lighting Shop) and your frothing at the mouth over the lastest light fitting, so you don't bother to change the bulb, but go for a lighting upgrade instead....except the LLS is out of stock and there's a 9 month back order at the factory. That will teach you to want Italian light fittings.

You should try to locate the retro light fittings from the eighties. Beautiful chrome, not like the stuff they produce nowadays. Very hard to get, and very expensive when you do find it.

yes you should, i dont know how youve survived with out them all ready.

Ok today i passed the 500km for the week in training, i just wanted that recorded :D i probably did 510 or 20 or so, maybe more :D
from what i can work out, we should be doing at least 400 as track cyclists, 800 for roadies.

I'm really considering some of those tyres (not pink, white most likely, small chance for green), even though they cost more than i usually pay, i'm sure i'll find something in the future perfect for these.

I've got 2 out of 3 right, just need to upgrade the electronics
• MINIMALISM: Nothing in the place but a TV, a bed, a fridge and a pile of clothes on the floor.
• MODERNISM: Same as minimalism, only with better TV, more gadgets (serious hi-fi, PC, video games, etc), and a large selection of power-tools.
• SHABBY CHIC: In which random styles of furniture, all bought second-hand, are combined to give an eclectic, cluttered charm - or a pigsty, in other words.

On the subject of those tyres: a couple of observations...

1) I've spoken to a couple of LBSs in Sydney and they sell the tyres for $60 when NOT on special. E.g. I rang Hillbrick bikes and they said they could do a "special order" of purple tyres, and it would still only cost $60 per tyre.

2) Just before the Easter Sunday fixie ride, I spoke to some messenger types about whether they were any good. Everyone said that they were cr@p tyres. Not just for skid stops, but for general road use too. Was told to avoid them.

3) If you want pink tyres, get the limited edition Schwalbe Stelvio and support breast cancer. You can get 'em cheap at Peter Bundy Cycles. Good colour range in the Ultremo 'R' range too.

man im reading a thread about a motor bike guy that used the wrong nos in his petrol tank, and yeah. But some one was commenting about another funny thread they had read.
It ranks right up there with that that thread on the bodybuilding forums about the guy who was trying to inject himself with steroids. He read that guys inject themselves in the ass, but he was concerned about how guys could deal with the excruciating pain of it.

.......turned out he was injecting into his rectum, not asscheek. I gotta see if I can find it.

ummm no idea, but why isnt he correcting it, the first dumb thing was just the amount he put in. I have bought a bottle of stuff that looked like that before, but it was a ahrd bottle, im wondering if he bought the stuff, and it wasnt the drink, but then let the thread roll for the attention.

Adrian looses -2 fashion points for having a gap between his arm warmers and his jersey.

Toff on the other hand gets +10 for simply looking cool.

That one doesn't show the waistcoat.

I ditched the jacket soon after arriving at the start because the bike geometry was wrong for it.

Adrian should have some better pics.
