If I can shake my 'flu, I'll be there (surprise surprise!).
Planning on riding 53x17 (84.2") due to the 'hill', rather than my 53x16 (89.4") 'Heffron' gearing.

What would you have to do Mike? I'm not sure what the specs are for 'singlespeed' in this context.

Single speed requires a free wheel. To get a free wheel, you can run a minimum rear sprocket of 16t. As I run 14t, the 16t would be too low a gear, so I would have to change my change ring, however not that practicable on my existing crank set, so I'm looking at new cranks.
End of the day its too much effort for one race.

Well nine riders lined up for the singlespeed race on 6 March, the majority BSCC riders who were riding their normal road bikes restricted to just one gear. I rode my usual Heffron single speed steed geared down to 84" (53x17).
Format was handicap over 8 laps (16.32km), I had a 4 minute start over scratch (A Grade) being a D Grader. I had to ride the event as a solo time trial because I was able to catch the limit rider (6 min) and then solo on to a win by about 15 seconds over a bunch of 5 or so that came through for the minor placings.
Good fun, it'd be great to see some more single speeders at the second race on the 20th March.
With the hill, my 84" gear was still a bit high, will try possibly a 81" (48x16) gear next time. (Depending on individual strength I think a usable gear on this circut is between 74 and 84").
