Course description: A fast undulating course. Long straights, weeping corners.
We could get a weeping squad to weep on the corners :wink:

I'm up for this one in D Grade, although it's my niece's 18th party the night before so I'll certainly be weeping around the corners.

It's my first race so I'm assuming I can jump into the D grade race.

im not sure who you are, how fast, etc, but id recomend at least trying to race hefron once or twice before this race, its an open crit, which is usualy faster than a hefron crit.

Much easier for a first crit. Have you raced any thing before? done waterfall etc etc etc?

I'm up for this one in D Grade, although it's my niece's 18th party the night before so I'll certainly be weeping around the corners.

It's my first race so I'm assuming I can jump into the D grade race.

Being an open you will have your grade submitted by the club to the state handicapper. The state handicapper will then determine your grade.

As per Tim, for your safety and everyone elses please give at least Heffron a go before you enter an open event. The pace will be seriously fast.

Racing Heffron every Saturday 3pm.

Hi , thanks for the advice. Sorry I'm a bit slow to reply but I'm out of the country at the moment.

I'll give you some history. I raced this one last year and this will be my first race as a member of DHBC. I came in around the middle of the field last time. I've been training a lot since last year and started doing the waterfall rides with you guys in the middies group. I was at the Dunc Gray DHBC crit in April and rode in the middle group. Unfortunately I had an injury in my knee that got worse that day and put me off the bike for about six weeks. I found a great ART specialist who worked it out and seems to have fixed it, but then I had to go into hospital for sinus surgery.....boring. That's why I haven't been around for a while.

Anyway, I was under the impression that the ride is restricted to D grade this year after reading the email sent to me.

They say "The Open D Grade- Corporate race is not open to any other graded riders" here's the link:

I might be reading this incorrectly. Either way I'm keen to race at Heffron anyway but thought I'd ease into it after my break. Could you give me advice on how I will be graded?

oh ok, well easing into racing will happen at hefron before the ride for life, but yeah, if youve raced our crit you may do all right? our crit can be fast, and the course is crazy!

In prior years it was laps of sprinters hill in the opposite direction. Last year it was some sort of half lap, cutting thru the middle, ie pretty flat

Thanks for your help everyone, I'll register next week when I'm back.

The course is the same as last year. It's opposite the normal direction, starting on the road passing the main cafe going into the middle of the park, veering left, slight uphill to the main road, turning left and straight towards the cafe again and a left after cafe back to start line. It can be pretty windy coming up the false flat/uphill section.

Despite Lacy reminding me Sunday afternoon, I forgot to register for this race. I was contemplating paying the extra $20 late fee and this arvo they sent out a email saying "no late fees" so I've entered.

If anyone else wants to enter, get in there now and enter

The dynamics of females riding is different to males riding. Unfortunately there aren't a lot of chances for females to demonstrate their abilities as they are usually racing males. This race would be a great opportunity for Orphic

No late fees huh. Guess I'll just sit around home in my derps instead. I realise on the day entry is harder for organisers, but with my work/life schedule, I don't know what I'm doing three days from now, let alone two weeks or a week's time. It makes trying to race anything but RAW a real pain.

Course info looks the same as last year (ie. downhill finish). Still undecided until Sunday morning. Big DHBC turnout in C grade though.

I'm a bit confused. I thought I'd be in D Grade as I haven't officially raced before. How do you know what the grades are?

Grades are HERE

D Grade seems to basically be a corporate race. C is a good starting point, even though some of the country opens would have a wider handicapping range, you generally won't get much easier than this when it's an Open held in or close to Sydney.

hows 7am sound? It will only take 20 min to get there, so that gives you 50 minutes once you get there. As im racing later, im happy to mind all the extra gear (pumps, etc) whilst everyone races.

In C grade there was a big crash with 2 laps to go

Matt has a suspected broken collar bone and was one of the 4 riders taken to hospital. I don't know which hospital but it was probably St Vincents.

All other DHBC riders are good, but Lacey will need a new jersey

It was carnage. A few of the A Graders went through a fence at the top of that little hill, took then fence with them. An ambulance went blowing by me in the Corporate race too, didn't see what happened. I had two near misses with guys chopping me up in the bunch. Shoulder bumping is fine, but I had to move two metres to my right because someone thought you won the race on lap 3 going up the hill.

I got some photos of the C grade race, none of the crash.

Just an update on Matt,

Me & Jess went and hung out with him at POWH ED for a few hours post crash. He has broken collar bone with a very minor laceration above it. It's a clean break from what I've heard and it is hoped he will be having surgery soon.

i just got back from the hospital after keeping him company for a couple of hours. Decided to make an exit when his parents turned up to tell him off. He's well and not in to much pain despite what looked like a spectacular break on the xray.

His main complaint was that he wasnt allowed to eat or drink anything because of the surgury prep, so all he had was a drip bag, which wasnt quite as satisfying. I was on the look out for a version with beer, so i could take it intravenously, but sadly that option wasnt available.

He's booked in for surgury either late tonight or first thing tomorrow morning depending on schedualing.

At the time I thought it was 20 bikes, but perhaps a little less

Let me try to sum up the status - let me know where I'm wrong
Joshua - in front of crash, not involved
Chidgey - in front of crash, not involved
Othy - at front of crash, hit but not knocked off
Matt - at front of crash, ended up with riders and bikes on top of him - broken collar bone, small crack in helmet but probably no other injuries.
James - behind the crash, hit but not knocked off
Clement - behind the crash, managed not to hit anyone with some heavy braking
Mark - behind the crash, knocked off by another rider over reacting. Minor graze on right leg
Simon C - ????

3 Others going to hospital;
Bathurst rider - looked really bad, probably the most injured
RBCC rider - ?
? - ?

Damage;
NSCC rider Roberts had a smashed frame after hitting the barriers trying to avoid fallen riders, looked similar to Weyiun's Ridley, but not hurt.
From what I saw not a lot of bike damage
Matt needs a new helmet
Mark needs a new jersey and leg warmers

Race was restarted about 40 minutes later for the final 2 laps. The riders took the first lap netural and raced the final lap. All DHBC riders except Matt took the restart.

Wow. Was it caused by inexperience? I hope Matt is ok, and crashes like this don't deter people from putting on more events. Should we start a donation from everyone to get Matt a new helmet? $5-10 each here and there would get a bit together.

...a very nasty crash, the pace was slow for the size of the group, and with a downhill run into a sweeping left hander the rear of the field would bunch up each lap at the point of the crash. The previous lap I was rolling on the outside line and felt the group drifting wide, so next time through I decided to stay inside to keep my position close to the front, and avoid potential run-ins, with two to go. A rider immediately to my right and one bike length in front, no idea who, looked uncomfortable with his place in the pack and the speed.. he looked to straighten his line while the road continued left, clipped the guy to his right who was probably still turning in, and as a consequence, brought the balance of the field down. I counted about 16 who got through. The sound of bikes and riders slamming into each other and the barriers was terrible..

Yes - Tim is right. Through the carnage and poor Matt getting the worst of it, Hugo managed to come 2nd in the Under 17s and is the proud owner of new Shimano pedals.

Roberts, the NCSS rider wrote his frame off, but somehow didn't hurt himself

Mat's bike is fine, no damage at all really. Though my house mate is eyeing the bike off. Could be interesting considering he is 5 foot 3 and mats bike is a 63cm frame.

I've just heard that one of the riders had a punctured lung, I think its the Bathurst rider but not confirmed.

Any news on Matt today?

It's good to hear you're patched up and reasonably comfortable Matt!

I was just behind and on the inside of the crash.
I ended up with my bike under a couple of other bikes but I didn't hit the deck.
Not sure how that happened - I was expecting to go over any moment but it just didn't happen.
Was going to help with the injured but SES were there quick smart and know more about such things than me.

A friend of mine who was there taking photos got some just after the crash.

The pack never felt very comfortable for me.
It was all bunching up along the top straight because of the head wind which was just making it dangerous.

I was chatting to a friend yesterday who was in Div 3 at Kurrajong the other weekend.
The guy who crashed coming into the finish was sitting just next to him before he got cut down by someone coming left way too quick. Apparently his bike was wrecked and he had quite bad penile urethral trauma. He had to have a urethral cathetor in place for a few days due to swelling to allow him to urinate, was urinating blood and was pretty sore.
Sounds as though his groin hit his top tube as he crashed - ouch!!
He didn't know who rode in to him and apparently that guy didn't crash - where's the justice!
