State Road Team Time Trial 19/6/11 Entries close Sun 5/6/11
ok on the nineteenth of june there is a state road team time trial championship on. If you are interested in riding, please post in this thread, talk to James fowler or Alex Chubb, or some one that seems to know what they are doing.
There is a possibility of us having an A team, and a Beer team, which will be Elite level, that will be harder to enter, these teams will probably not be organised at all on the forum, so if you think you want to be in one of them, have a talk to me, simon, james or Alex.
For other teams will we have our ever sexy Valley Wheelers? is there a girls elite and vets side? any one else? triathlete team?

I'll get round to it after I've solved world peace
I've checked and it appears that the time trial will start from Eastgrove Park North, down Forbes Street, then left into Bungonia Road. After crossing the freeway this becomes Windellama Road. Continue along Windellama Road until the U-turn at Dewsbury Lane (it's not marked on the map, but presumably it is the road leading south at about the 22km mark), then back the same way. Total altitude gain to the U-turn is about 90 metres over the 22 km, with two very small downhills.
This is part of the Bungonia Loop, maps on MapMyRide and Bikely.
See you all there.

This is part of the same route as the Masters Women's road race a few weeks ago. If it is anything like the day we road, there was a savage cross wind that beat everyone up and always appeared like a head wind. You might want to practice riding in an echelon. The inclines, although appearing small, still took their toll. Particularly for people who weren't sheltered from the wind.

I think you are doing the road racing course I did at the NSW champs. Something like Ken Dinnerval, but one lap
I think we're doing same as you but twice, they wouldn't use an extra section due to the extra marshalling required. Looking at the cycling NSW website, all distances are multiples of 22.1km, which according to johnj is the turnaround point.

Then the course is undulating with no large hills. Wind could be a problem

I'd just like to confirm that the Valley Wheelers have a team entered in this. I have no idea whether we are in the plus 150 category, or the open masters category, but we are in. Just so we're clear, our team will have no timetrial bars, no disk wheels, no tri spokes, no v shaped rims, no teardrop helmets, no skinsuits, no carbon fibre frames, rims, seatposts, or nuthin'. Instead we will have steel bikes, downtube shifters, and thermoses of tea in our bidon cages (which will be on our downtubes, not behind our saddles, except for one which may possibly be mounted on the handlebars).
I was also going to say that we won't have any newfangled clipless pedals either, but I discovered that John, who will be riding his first official club race with us, and has never owned either clipless pedals or shoes, has invested in a set for the big race day. So while the rest of us, who do use clipless pedals a bit are going back to toestraps for the day, John will be clipping in to some shiny new SPDRs.

I was going to check if you were still out. Looks like i'm digging out some form. 6 uni exams in 4 days this week hasn't helped my too much (nothing but studying, exams, and not enough sleep), but i'll take my legs out for a spin tomorrow afternoon.I'm out of this team....buggered my knee 2 weeks ago and it hasn't recovered.
Josh Lester is in.
Hopefully you'll be better for some long training rides in July.
More Valley Wheeler news.
The moustaches this year have been cultured from one of Fausto Coppi's last nasal hairs, and look delightful.
Will bring them in their Petri dishes.
This afternoon, I had a look at the TTT route via Google's "Course Fly-By Video" from Lizanne's post above.
Seemed a very fast way of doing the TimeTrial, but I was continually surprised by the amount of off-road racing involved.
Still, that will sort out the pretenders.
It also seemed extremely cold and windy, even sitting here sipping tea in front of the heater..
Somebody tried to tell me it was going to be held near Goulburn, but that can't be right, not in mid June.
Anyway, happy that so many DHBC are giving it a go.

Race Report - NSW Club Team Time Trial (TTT) Championships
DHBC 150+ Team
Michael Clement (captain)
Mark Masterson
Mark Lacey
Craig Weller
Location Golburn NSW, lets call it cold-burn. Conditions were cold and windy, on a dead semi hilly road.
Seeded 6th by NSW Cycling, we were giving a 12.20pm start (teams 2 minutes apart), pefect for a warm start - NOT. When we had arrived at 9.45am there was no wind, but by midday the wind was pretty strong and cold. The decision was made as to what to wear and I rugged up, only to change my mind 10 minutes later and take one item off.
0-10k
We were working well together making good progress when at 8k Mark M declared that that he couldn't go on, we asked him to sit on the back but he said it was quits and pulled off, leaving 3 of us
10 -22.5k (turnaround)
About 15k, Craig started to have problems, we told him to stay on the back while Mark L and I shared the work. We caught the team in front of us, but they got a flat just as we approached them. I don't understand why they stopped, there were 4 of them and you only need 3 to finish.
22.5k - 41.5k
Mark L and I took up roles, so to focus on Craig's pace. Mark L kept a close eye on Craig, while I punched a hole thru the wind. For the return journey I did all the work on the front apart from 3 turns of about 1k or so by Mark L to give me a short rest. Mark L had to keep yelling at me to slow down, he was doing an excellent job of protecting Craig. At 41k I red lined and Mark L took the 3rd short turn, I recovered straight away and went back to the front.
41.5k - 45k
Craig was seriously wasted, I had gone too quick on the flat section (say 38k - 41.5k) and the bridge over the freeway became a hill for him, we were so close but he was on death row. All I could do was sit in front, while Mark L and I provided as much wind protection as possible. We were close to getting the next team in front of us, it was like a carrot on a stick, but I couldn't do anything about it.
So we had done one team in front of us and nearly a second. No teams overtook us, but it appeared to me that the team behind us had gained ground, so what was our result;
1h12m to place ourselves 4th out of 10 teams. One place outside a NSW medal

I think we were a fair bit off. Next year will be a different storyDamn!!!! So close Mike - I expected a medal from you lot
How much time was 3rd place ahead????
Gale force winds, cracked lips, drinking defreezer out of our bidons, with the huskies howling on the cruel ridges and this was just the Sign In area.
The Dawdlers were back. Lindsay, John, Chris And Peter.
Wind, pain, wombats, wobbles, crosswinds and headwinds. We were preparing to do battle with the elements. This year there were no embarassing snafu's with fitting our electronic timing tags. We felt good. And we had a secret weapon. Scones.
At the countdown to the off, the gusts were lifting my upper lip. And then the moustache blew off. This wind had passed over the pack ice in its' time, and we really had to hang onto our scones.
And then we were moving, bent down fiddling with our pedal straps, getting settled, all tucked in nicely behind Chris.
Karzie, you would have been proud.
Lindsay's dream of finding the "Best Chinese Restaurant in Goulburn" kept us focused.
Images of sweet and sour pork, honeyed chicken and endless dim sims streamed past our dripping noses.
We kept up the relentless pace, tucked down low, riding deeper into the Badlands, just finishing off our second scone, when we saw, up ahead, coming towards us in the sleet, a Touch of Red.
It was the DHBC Womens Elite Team of Jessica, Lizanne Jo and Aimee!
Great cheers of delight, hoots, waving and big grins from all.
We were quite keen to pull over and offer them scones, but they were clearly on a mission and went on to finish on the podium.
Congrats - great to share a windy Time Trial with you all.
Afterwards, we did find that Chinese restaurant in Goulburn and feasted with Mike and Mark.
And enjoyed, as Lindsay put it, "Some good ol' Dawdlers backslapping".

RESULTS ARE HERE.
A great day out for the Valley Wheelers. Our rigorous team training regime consisted of two laps of Centennial Park where I believe we reached speeds in excess of 33km/hr. Then Lindsay’s headset came loose so we had to stop, fortunately for me as I was exhausted. My solo training included two Waterfall rides, where I got dropped by the C25s. Thanks to Eleri and Lindsay for getting me home.
On arrival at 9.30 I remarked that 10 degrees and sunshine were very unseasonable for Goulburn in winter. Almost immediately the wind picked up and the sun went behind clouds for the duration. Other teams had set up rollers for their warm up. That looked tiring, so we had tea and scones instead. We had a vigorous warm up ride of about 200 metres from the carpark to the start line, where we arrived ahead of schedule (this experience was not repeated).
We were told that our moustaches were not UCI legal as they constituted aerodynamic fairings under UCI Rule 1.3.011 (possibly under Subsection 3 “No technical innovation regarding anything used, worn or carried by any rider…may be used until authorised by the UCI Executive Committee.”) Anybody know where you can download a UCI technical innovation application form?
We were 24th of the 30 teams in our division, so we were definitely faster than the 6 teams who failed to turn up for the start. Amazingly, we were faster than one ladies masters team. Perhaps they stopped for a spot of brunch, or maybe they were looking for our moustaches?
Magic moments:
Lindsay getting dropped before we’d gone 300 metres.
Being closely scrutinized by the race referee when he drove past, to ensure that we’d removed our moustaches.
Getting that big cheer from the ladies as they passed.
Pete asking the marshals at the turning point “Are we the first through?”
Being caught and dropped by a solo rider who’d been dropped from his team because he was too slow…
Being helped along by Toff for the last 10 kms.
Finishing line abreast with three great teammates in my first ever race.
Sitting down to take the transponder off my bike at the finish and discovering I couldn’t stand up again.
Eating a big plate of honey chicken at the Golden Star Chinese Restaurant.

Firstly my congratulations to all who competed on Sunday especially the Women's team & their bronze, well done.
I had a great day & really enjoyed the ride inspite of the wind. A couple of "the only-ies" in our team. The only team with a rider with galvanised spokes. The only team with a rider with toe clips & straps.
Some of my thoughts of the day - Warm-up is essential. I spent my time socializing before our start time and paid the price in the first 10km when I got dropped & everybody had to wait for me. I didn't really feel good until I'd been riding for an hour!
I felt really good about my wheels. Singles are great for this type of event & when I started producing some power towards the end (just before my back gave out) wheels were starting to sing.
It was a great lift to get the cheer from other DH teams. So I'd encourage everyone to give this type of racing a go. Top or bottom end it's all enjoyable. Here's some pics.
