Anyone keen to guinea pig this over the next 2 Saturdays (most likely 31st)? I'm looking for a strong riding partner to come check out the route with me. Wouldn't be trying to set any PR's on the hills but I would be keen to try to get between them quickly.
The route has been adjusted from the one in the post above slightly to avoid roads that could be too busy.

Who's up for the challenge?
Club male model (Dave Rankin) and I have optimised the route (after a reconnaissance ride on Sunday). In summary, we've swapped out a couple of hills, with a view to including 13 of Sydney's steepest - not necessarily the longest - but ones which will give you a proper slap in the face. We've also created Strava segments to record our efforts for posterity

I love the effort involved! Thanks guys...
Incidentally, I struggle to see how 'Steve Kokkinis' can have the QOM up Livingstone Rd.

Hi guys,
A couple of additional points in advance of the ride:
- It would be great if you could record your ride on Strava, as we've created Strava segments for each climb (and that will enable us to record and compare times)
- If you're happy to disclose your weight, then I can calculate (and we can compare) our times for each climb on a handicap basis in accordance with the following formulae:
Handicap Time (male) = Actual Time x ( 85 / Weight )
Handicap Time (female) = Actual Time x ( 70 / Weight )

This was a memorable day in the saddle
Sydney was at its glorious best. We had almost 20 starters, and it was great (in particular) to see so many riders clearly prepared to step outside their comfort zones
The idea was to seek out 13 of Sydney's steepest hills - not necessarily the longest - but ones which would give you a proper slap in the face - and incorporate them into a 'tour' of Sydney
First up: the Alps of Coogee. The mood was cautious - particularly after Mayson and Rankin led the bunch down an erroneous incline, thereby damaging their navigational credibility before the first climb. Pearce Street was a mere hors d'oeuvre; Carrington Road and Alexander Street (on the southern Alps) and Arden Street (on the northern Alps) a more fitting entrée
Next up: the menacing Attunga Street - statistically, the steepest road in Sydney (with an average gradient of ~ 25%). I now understand why this suburb is called Edgecliff. Strong riding by all to get up this hill: it's basically most of Bellevue Road (on our normal Eastern Hills route) compressed into something about a tenth as long
We then took the scenic route through the City - along Macquarie Street, Circular Quay, The Rocks, under and then over the Harbour Bridge
Montpelier Street (Neutral Bay) took many by surprise: it starts gently enough, but then twists, turns and finishes with a couple of nasty switchbacks. If you listen carefully, you can still hear the echo of expletives that Andrew Harvey unleashed when he tackled this climb several months ago
Breakfast at The Boathouse at Balmoral Beach was a real highlight: excellent food and coffee, and glorious sunshine, at one of Sydney's most picturesque locations. It was always going to be interesting to see if anyone dropped any weight on Awaba Street (Mosman) straight after. But thankfully, everyone managed to keep their breakfast down, and there were some impressive efforts
Waiwera Avenue (North Manly) was a short, sharp pinch. Special mention to Andrew Parker, who took out the KOM on this yesterday
But everyone, at this point, was thinking about Alexander Street (Collaroy). Terrifying to look at from any angle, it basically goes from Collaroy beach, straight up a cliff, to the Plateau. You need a strategy for this: it's long enough that you can't just sprint. And because the steepest part is in the middle, if you lactate too early, and don't leave something for the back end, you're gone. Outstanding efforts from everyone on this climb: the general consensus was that this is the dirtiest of the dozen
We then turned west and rode over Allambie Hill, which, on any other day, would be a climb in itself, but on this day, was just a means to get to the Ryde area. The main purpose of coming here was to tackle Tarrants Avenue (Eastwood). Several road signs on approach warn of its steepness. And, whilst not very long, it strikes out a gradient of ~ 30% in parts, meaning that, if you concentrate too much weight on your rear, you can fall backwards
With the most challenging climbs behind us, we then returned to Marrickville - via Moorebank, Concord, Burwood and the Cooks River Cycleway - for a couple of pinches closer to home to give the ride a local flavour
In total, ~ 125km of distance and ~ 2,000m of (quality) elevation, for a ~ 2pm finish
Everyone who participated deserves special praise. And chapeau (in particular) to the club's strongest climbers on the day: Bob Wallace, Dave Rankin and Renee Heinrich
Thanks to Dougie for conceiving the idea, and to Peter Bownes and Dave Rankin for their leadership on the road
Hopefully we can make this a regular event (and any feedback or further ideas for the next instalment would be most welcome)
Cheers
