Rode up Stanwell Park -> Stanwell Tops hill today in 39-25. Blowed if I know how I rode it in 81" last year, it was hard enough using 39-25

Last year I rode up it on 69" and found it to be a tough climb, then earlier this year I rode up it on 81" to test the waters, I didn't find it any easier or harder on either gear and probably didn't go at a different speed, I just found myself pushing the bigger gear at a slower cadence.

So Lizanne has been instrumental in the ordering of some pretty cool hats by the sounds of it. If anyone was late to the party like me, let me know by 5pm Monday your size an how many you want and I'll do my best to get it tacked on to the current order (I've been in contact with despatch). You'll have to be prepared with the cash or email me the transfer receipt or I won't place your order. I it all falls through, obviously I'll provide full refunds. I'm working on the same price, but if there is any sort of penalty, I'd just split it over the number of people rather than number of hats. PM me if you want in. Cheers, Ant.

Fixie Century Prologue HERE

I think the plan was to ride all the way from Marrickville, probably with a stop at the pub/brewery in Picton. We can sort out the leaving time/ travel methods during the week.

Is anyone catching the train down on Saturday? There aren't many trains to Bundanoon itself so might have to get off at Moss Vale and ride there which is approximately 20km.

I'm thinking of leaving shortly after lunch and arriving mid afternoon.

Could be a plan Lizanne. What time do you think you'll be going through?

Not sure about the track tonight as I'm nursing a hell of a cold after swimming in the 16 degree Hunter River yesterday!

So I've looked up the train timetable and the best station (near Marrickville) is Wolli Creek. There is a train at 1:08, change at Campbelltown for the 2:04 to Moss Vale and arrive in Moss Vale at 3:23. Half an hour or so to Bundanoon should have us arriving about 4pm.

People meeting at Wolli Creek Station at 1pm on Saturday:
1. Jo Skinner
2. Toff?

drive an mx5 from Bundanoon to Sydney

Hi all fellow Century participants,

I will be driving down to Bundanoon on Saturday, because I am going to a friend's wedding somewhere north-west of Goulburn in the afternoon/evening, and the only way I can get there and back to Bundanoon that night is by car. And of course Sunday I'll be riding the bike, so I have the problem of getting my car back to Sydney.

Lizanne's partner Ben has kindly (been) offered to drive the car back to Sydney for me, but would be making a special trip to do so.

So, if anyone's partner or friend will be down that way on the Sunday morning (or even late saturday night) and would be interested in taking a silver mazda mx5 convertible for a responsible drive back to Sydney, please drop me a line. PM is probably best.

Thanks,
Andrew

PS the car's a manual.
PPS it will have had the "italian tuneup" the day before on the trip down, so should be running nicely by then.
PPPS might be able to take a bag down, but the car boot and my schedule are pretty tight.

Ok here's the latest;

There will be a car going down but will have limited room for bags as we are trying to fit everyone (with their bikes) in who cannot leave earlier on Saturday. On Sunday the car will be empty and have the usual availability to carry bags back to Sydney. SO if you plan to ride it is probably best to just travel light and carry a small bag on your back.I will aim to book us in for dinner at 7pm at the bundanoon hotel.

Breakfast Sunday morning I am trying to organise at 8am at the Ye Olde Bicycle Shoppe & Cafe
11 Church St, Bundanoon, the cafe we often go to on Saturday morning. There will be a set menu yet to be decided; so if you have any special dietary requirement let me know now.

Final checks of bike; please ensure;
-you have plenty of brake pad left
-two functioning brakes
- That you lube your chain prior,
-get your chain tension right, so that it doesn't come off on the decscent
-choose an appropriate gear.

Hello all, it's been a while...

I can't leave til lunchtime saturday, so I'll be on the train to Moss Vale.

Am I right in thinking that if I bring a small bag on my back to Bundanoon, it's pretty likely that it can fit in that car back to Sydney?

I'll still have some tools with me on the bike, i.e. a 15mm spanner etc. Will run the usual 76". I thought Simon was being overcautious about the brake pads, but then I saw the route profile! Macquarie pass is a huuuuuge descent, makes the hill down to Stanwell Park look tiny. So I'm putting new brake pads on.

The weather forecast looks good, hopefully a tailwind the whole way.

People meeting at Wolli Creek Station at 1pm on Saturday:
1. Jo Skinner
2. Toff?

"The prologue will start at 2pm from the corner of River Road and Remembrance Driveway, Tahmoor. Tim has my number in case you all miss the turnoff." Brownie

I'm thinking (if i wake up) slowies in the morning to warm the legs. hang out @ the cafe until Tim get there. grab a social coffee. head home grab my gear and head for the train. i'll be leaving Wolli Creek @ 11:08 on a train. this gets me into Tahmoor @ 12:39. i'll grab lunch and another coffee then look for Brownie. I will then join the peloton for the slackers version of the prologue.
has any one checked out the route? i was told only gentile hills. There seems to be 2 HUGE ones!
Anyone want to join me in this option?

oh if anyone is looking thinking about the train, there are track works... I think they disrupt the trip out, depending on what line you use.

I've ridden that route many times. While there is a lot of climbing the gradient isn't steep

Depending on what time I actually leave Tempe, I could be rolling thru Tahmoor about that time, so I'll keep an eye out for you guys

Suggestions anyone?

To avoid the trackwork, you just avoid the Airport and East Hills line. Instead you take the Inner West line. (The purple one on the CityRail map).

I will be getting on at Stanmore, but you can get on at Petersham, Summer Hill, Ashfield, or any other stop that is convenient. It's a 5 minute ride from Marrickville to Stanmore Station.

Option 1:
1 - Take the Inner West train leaving Stanmore Station at 12:56pm (Platform 3) and arriving at Ashfield Station at 1.04pm (Platform 4)
2 - Take the South train leaving Ashfield Station at 1:08pm (Platform 5) and arriving at Campbelltown Station at 2:14pm (Platform 3)
3 - Take the Southern Highlands train leavinng Campbelltown Station at 2:19pm (Platform 4) and arriving at Moss Vale Station at 3:38pm (Platform 2)

Option 2:
1 - Take the Inner West train leaving Stanmore Station at 2:56pm (Platform 3) and arriving at Ashfield Station at 3.04pm (Platform 4)
2 - Take the South train leaving Ashfield Station at 3:08pm (Platform 5) and arriving at Campbelltown Station at 4:14pm (Platform 3)
3 - Take the Southern Highlands train leavinng Campbelltown Station at 4:19pm (Platform 4) and arriving at Moss Vale Station at 5:38pm (Platform 2)

I am not sure whether I will choose the early option, or the late option just yet. Probably easiest for everyone to meet up at Ashfield Station on platform 5.

I agree, let's take the Inner West / South Line.

I'm going to ride to Ashfield (not far from my house), and I think the 1:08 train from there would be good.
There's only a 5min window at Campbelltown before the next train, so in case we don't make the connection, the earlier option might be better.

The ride from Moss Vale to Bundanoon sounds nice and easy.

As for the food, I just changed my order...

I'm beginning to like the idea of the Slackers Prologue from Tahmoor. Think I'll aim for the 11,04 from Lewisham that ultimately gets me into Tahmoor at 12,54. Can I suggest you come with me Lizanne? Trackwork & busses if you start at Wolli.

For a bit of fixie century trivia & being the 5th century, I had a look back and found the start list from the first Century back in 2007 to see who had ridden all 5. Here it is;

Image

From L to R: Garth, Grant, Ross, Matt, Eugen, Simon, Peter, Julian, ?, Steve, Huw and Kevin, our beloved support crew. Missing from the photo were James (waiting on the wrong side of the hotel) and Lindsay (the photographer!).

Alex, I reckon it's going to be easier to ride to Ashfield, instead of catching a train from Stanmore.

Not considering the later option anymore. I'll meet you at Ashfield Station at 1.00 after a refreshing breezy ride of a few flat kms.

All other train catchers, see you at Ashfield at 1pm.

the problem with the car is we are taking 4 bikes & 5 people. It is going to be a tight sque

Lizanne - and anyone who wants to do the Slackers' Prologue - I reckon we should meet at Ashfield Station. There's a really tight train change there if we go from Lewisham and as Toff says it's only a few gentle kms down the road. So how does 11am sound, Ashfield platform 5? The train leaves at 11.08. then we have a 5 minute window to switch trains at Cambelltown. We'll want platform 4. Remember that because I'm bound to forget!

Are you brining a bag? I am. So I'll have to pack light.

Does anyone remember if the pub provides towels?

How many kms from Tahmoor to Bundanoon?

Tahmoor to Bundanoon is 69 km on the Old Hume Highway.

My horoscope for the day:

Other people's revved-up energy mixes with your own today, creating a distracting situation that could leave you feeling utterly worn out by evening. There are just so many matters to attend to, and so many people to talk to along the way! Take several breaks throughout the day, so you can take deep breaths and rejuvenate your energy.

So, Pisceans, lots of pub stops for us today!

Great day for the Century. Terrific company along the way, a lot of laughs and highlights. The route was a blast, the meals memorable. A couple of bingles, and Mike added to his collection of tattered jerseys with an impressive effort down Macquarie Pass.

Alex also suffered, a victim of one of those stupid moments along a bike path on the coast. Hope you all recover well for the Grafton this weekend coming, and do it with style and power.

The railway option was very appealing, and a few of us enjoyed a "lift up the hill".
I would like to claim the title of the first DHBC rider to get a flat on a train.

Thanks to all the organisers, Kevin on back up and the bunch.

Well.. the fixie century has lived up to the reputation that it started with, a ride that would be tough on a road bike, but instead ridden on a fixie. Unlike the Sydney to the Gong, the fixie century has never really been a ride that you can just turn up to and assume to finish, as the late great Kevin discovered (well actually he is not late, but I spent a weekend with him last week, and he really was great, I couldn't stop laughing, and he did actually finish the ride the year after he failed it). The ride used to be hard, riding over the hill renowned for its anklesnappingness, 'Razorback', but lacked the scenery that would put it into the NSW cycling calendar as one of the top tourist destinations, so captain Simon decided that what we needed was a coastal cruise in exchange for my beloved m5 return route. The most imposing part of this change, was the introduction of the dreaded climb from scenic Stanwell park, to even more scenic (probably because its higher) Stanwell tops. The other addition to the ride that would be no trouble if we had free wheels, was the ride down Mac pass, one of the more popular hills to climb for people who like riding up hills, but not the safest thing for racing down on a fixie! There is a real risk of clipping pedals, and sheer click faces to drop off if you swing wide.

This year, the year that will forever be known as the fixie costal (thanks to the spelling on our hats), started like any other fixie century, well if you take away Lindsey, due to a wedding, and Hue Morgan, for some sort of Canberra business (am I leaving any one out of this list of regulars?). Though we did include a walk to see the glow worms, which was one of the most amazing things I have been to! Walking down those stairs into what seemed like surrounding caves of glowing lights had an almost mystical awe to it, and reminded me of the village of Ewok's in star wars at night, all these lights up in the tree's, the glow not clear and defined, adding to the aura. This experience was added to by the two wombats we saw on our way down, which were waddling within meters of our path. We had been told about them by a nice couple who we had stopped to ask for directions off, though Ben (Lizannes English boyfriend) didn't think they were for real, perhaps because he didn't really know what a wombat was, and we had likened them to drop bears (which he did know about and proceeded to tell me the history of drop bears and their relation to Japan etc.)

Breakfast at the cycling Cafe in Bundanoon was amazing?! I don't know what it was that Peter had, but I want it!@! it was covered in berries, and possibly one of the most tantalizing looking breakfasts (or even deserts, though it was just yogurt covered in different types of berries etc) I have ever seen in my different touring endeavors through NSW, Victoria and Tasmania (though I have had some amazing iced coffees that could compete I guess). This left us leaving some time closer to 9:30, with 180 or so km and a massive hill to travel on our fixies.

The early morning was largely uneventful, though scenic, amazingly scenic, and we passed Patrick (mr Muscles) parents place, and he just happened to be there, and jumped out on his roadie and had a coffee with us at the pie shop. Leading up to the pie shop we did meet a nice moo cow, who took a liking to James Fowler, and jumped a fence to follow him! It was the cutest thing to ride along behind that moo cow which was galloping along behind James, I even got my Iphone out and took a pic, this seemed like a good idea, until it stopped, as it was frightened by a passing GSXR motor bike, and turned towards me. Luckily enough, the next bike had some amazingly loud pipes, so it galloped off over another fence, hopefully into the paddock it had come from (can cows normally jump barbwire fences?!).

This year Mac Pass lived up to expectation, though Alex Dirks was having a lovely time, stopping for photos, While Alex Chubb's (Chugg for any one that only knows him by his nickname) was having issues with flats while racing down the hill, Mike Clement went for a bit of a slide! It turns out that after four different people stopped him to point out they thought his chain was a bit loose, it snapped (possibly because it was too loose), and brought him down on his Iphone! He hurt his hip a bit, but was able to continue on to the brewery for lunch.

With all the breaks and late start we were running slightly behind schedule, so Brownie and Simon decided that it would be good to take an even more scenic route through the country, instead of the nice flat, but boring trip we had planned to our lunch break. And it just so happened, that the Ken Dinnerville course was not far from the bottom of Mac pass! so we jumped on in! This was great, I have always wanted to ride the Dinnerville, with its renowned hole patched roads, and long steep hill, that is used to split the men from the boys, and boys from girls, though I don't know which direction each goes in. It wasn't until we were at the bottom of the hill that it actually dawned on me that we were actually riding up this hill though, well in the end only about half of the field we had with us were actually riding up it, the rest walked!

Lunch was great, at a brewery in Wollongong next to the football stadium there, that it turns out was approved by Ian, when he was a councilman in Illawarra (seriously that lad has done every thing?! I wont go into the list, as he is not really one to tell everyone everything about himself, but he competed for Australia in Ninjitsu amongst other things?!). The Porter was the beer of choice, and the wedges were heaps good, and not deep fried!

After lunch is when the decimation of our field took its toll though, with four or so riders pulling out to jump on the train, Mark and Mike Injured, Toff totally sick (seriously I can’t believe how far he made it, it was looking hard from the start, where he swapped what he had planned for breakfast with Camilla for a can of some thing or other white?! the poor lad couldn't stomach anything), and I am not sure why Peter was jumping off, but it may have been because his tail light which he leaves on during the day was running out of batteries.

We then headed off down the bike path, in a paceline, which turned into two pacelines because the second paceline wasn't keeping up with the first, and this isn't a quiet bike path either, so the great train wreck which followed a nice couple pulling out in front of us should probably have been foreseen.. but oh well, it wasn't, and it happened, and Andrew and Alex (chugg), may never be the same again, Alex's hip now re injured (with the Grafton to Inverell on this weekend!), he chose to jump on the train alongside me, Jo 'the builder', and Andrew (the lad that drives the sweet MX5). This left a field of about 10 still on bikes, after 20 or so started! This wasn’t all bad though, as I did get a bottle of Coke, with Mikes name on it from the coke machine at the station.

Well this is about all I have to say about the whole ride, as I missed the massive hill, and didn’t see people until I had been home, caught up on facebook, recharged my phone, and caught a lift by car off Jo down to the velodrome, where Adrian was waiting, with stories of bike film festivals to tell us!. So yeah. I hear it was a tough ride that Nathan, Camilla, Lizanne and the rest all finished! Crazy!

#note; parts of this story my or may not have been edited by my memory in order to increase fond memories from this ride, and it is dually noted that there seems to be no reason for me not finishing other than general softness. This is a possible turn of events.

Great effort from everyone who rode!! It was great to be able to tag on for a few kms and hang out at the pie shop. Sorry to hear there were some injuries, I hope they're not too serious. Awesome 7

Great ride report Tim!

Not much to add about the remainder after Thirroul... there were no more mechanicals, flats or injuries, just a lot of weary legs and some good climbs.

The Stanwell Park hills tended to split us up a bit, I got a bit confused by who was in front and behind, but we all regrouped at the Stanwell Tops Wilidlife park. (Did anyone know they have tigers there?)

We had a nice tailwind all the way home past Waterfall and Sutherland. I've never come through there so late in the day - it was actually really nice. We only just made in it as the sun set, which was lucky as most of us didn't have lights. Christian led the way onto the track for a final lap, where we peeled off shoes and compared tan marks/road grime/leg cramps, and even managed a shower before dinner at the German Club. Very civilised.

Thanks again to the support team - Kevin, Jessica, the stationwagon and the lolly snakes, and Simon's great organisation. I'm glad everyone survived the various mishaps. This ride was pretty much the reason I joined the club, and I wasn't disappointed. Next year can we come back through the National Park, for a bit of added adventure?

A great day. Thanks very much to the organisers and support crew, and to everyone who took part.

Tim's report is fantastic - it pretty much covers it all.

It was a very scenic ride, but I found the hills quite hard (didn't have to walk, but I was not much faster riding on some of them). Macquarie pass was something else, and I won't be going down it fixed again until it's been wiped from my memory.

After lunch at Wollongong, we took the bike path up north. It was somewhat disconcerting to suddenly finding Alex sideways on the ground about 2ft in front of me, and being unable to avoid him (hope all is ok), then immediately cramping both legs. But with Jo's app(titude) for navigation we found the train station in good time, and on boarding the train found Pete, Chris, Mike and Mark also aboard.

I was intending to hop off at Waterfall and continue the ride from there, but once in the seductive embrace of the 1559 from Thirroul my willpower evaporated and I stayed on board until Wolli Creek. Thence to Tempe (Jo and I were the first back to the velodrome FWIW), then home in time for a shower & ride back to the German Club for dinner. All up for the day about 125km until I got home the first time, so my 2nd metric fixed century, but no imperial one yet. What date's next years? (I think it will take about a year to work through my current bout of "general softness".)

Thanks very much to Lizanne's Ben for driving my car back from Bundanoon. For the record, Kevin Ll has put in an early claim for that gig next time it's needed.

Congratulations to every one who did the full distance. Respect.

Andrew

PS Love the hats. Perhaps some long overdue recognition for legendary club members Bartholomew and Winifred Costal. Furry the dead elephant would be so proud.

Great day out!! Thank you to Simon for your fantastic organisation. To Kevin and Jess for the support car 'just in case'. To Tim for always keeping an eye out to make sure I was OK. To Camilla for being a 'non snoring' roomie. And to Pete for his encouragement. And to everyone else for a great days ride.

Top work team! You are all mad and I wish I had been on the ride. Oh well - we went to Waterfall. Absence of cows on that route.

I second the fact that you are all mad, although the photos do look like you all had a great day - and the weather was the icing on the cake.

Great report Tim!

Not too much happened after the group shrank. I managed to ride all the way up the Stanwell climb, i did stop once (i believe i must have been just taking in the view), and then got a small push from Ian to get going again. At the top Nathan called for a lift, but we quickly convinced him of the foolishness and he corrected his error to finish the ride well.

Next year i'm expecting more people to take on the challenge of "the fixie century pre-prologue prologue, prologue, and century, triple whammy epic adventure", but i'm contemplating day 1 going Costal!!

Fantastic day! I had the most glorious ride from Bundanoon to Robertson. Kevin was the greatest support vehicle and found the loveliest shoulder to pick me up on, thanks!

The sun was shining, the scenery was spectacular, the grass was so green and there were so many flowers. i saw the most incredible purple tulips I have ever seen in dear Robertson, amazing.

Great work to all who participated. Great report too, Tim!
Andrew, I'm glad you got your car back and I'm looking forward to more country adventures very soon.
Bring on summer!

You all look a bit too happy to be in the dire straights of needing a train ride!

This years century really was an entertaining event. We tried a few new things which some paid off for some and didn't for others. The addition of the morning cafe breakfast proved to be a big hit and compiling the quality of the food with the speed of the service and great auora which the cafe brought to the event was an amazing way to start the morning!

This year the major planning of ride included the prologue the day before, thank you Mr Browne. When the event first started we all used to catch the train out together and some fun socializing and annoying other passengers as our bikes took up most of the train and then get told off by the train guards. But in the past few years there has been an ongoing interest into riding out to Bundanoon. Though I opted to work in the morning it sounded like the shorter prologue was a big success with most people finding their body's backing up quite well. The longer prologue however for various reason ended in a one in four completion rate, maybe abit too harsh on the body.

On Sunday morning we had a plan that Jessica would ride the first 30kms, we would ride at a nice friendly pace and I would ride with her and then cut my break short at Robertson to reintegrate the bunch. As it turned out we picked up Mark and Nathan, followed the signs, cut out 7-10kms of riding and arrived at Robertson half an hour early with time to put our feet up. Maybe next year the whole bunch would benefit from this as it get the ride back to 170kms rather than 180kms.

The great fear of the change to the fixie century route was a mishap on the Macquarie pass descent. When I created it I don't remember one single person agreeing that the route was possible or that it could be user friendly. I told everybody that it was the route for 2010 and that was that. Everybody didn't so much agree as just simply said I want to do this ride so if that's the route we are taking then so be it. But at the same time everybody agreed that they would put on new brake pads and check their chain tension. But this year I feel that since the course was successfully achieved in 2010 with a high completion rate, people let their guards down on bike safety, which I myself was probably a perpetrator of. My worst fears came true when Mike's chain came off at 50km/hr, locked up his rear wheel and he went down, reportably not far from the cliff's edge. The other feed back is that Mike's loose chain was picked up by four different people independently and nothing was done to tighten it. The question lies on how we stop this from happening next year if the same route continues?? Compulsary bike checks? Fines for poor basic maintenance? a Peer checking system where if others pick up problems everybody agrees to communicate???

The other fantastic addition to the 2011 course was taking the Ken Dinnerville route. It started with a beautiful run through and a small river and the travelled up and down over a quiet and beautiful road. It proved to be a great way to transition on to wollongong and added a great new sector which was filled with lots of variety in terrain but at times felt like paris-roubaiux in the quality of road surface.

All in all in the 5 fixie centuries I have ridden this was a really great edition which produced lots of fun and enjoyment..

Any further feed back about the route? Was it abit tough?

So... weirdly enough it would appear I have picked up a kidney infection. Is this a common cycling affliction from dehydration or something?!
