Road Bike Wheel Advice Please...

Hi All,

Just a bit of advice please...

Most of you would know my beautiful Avanti Questa Road Bike 8) . It came with Mavic Kyyrium Equipe wheels and the bike has served me well for the last 12 months.

However, some of you may remember recently I brought my wheel to the track as it was making a funny clicking sound. With the combined brain mass of the club there that night, we deduced that the noise was coming from a reinforcing lug that had come loose from the weld of the rim and was shaking between two spoke nipples. However, due to the size of the lug there was no way to get it out without pulling the rim apart.

Interestingly enough, just after I discovered what it was, I got chatting to a guy on the harbour bridge who was riding the same bike as mine with the same wheels (and I had not seen another one in Sydney until then) and the same thing had happened to his.

So, off I toddled to Burwood Cycleworld where they lent me a spare wheel (with a bald tyre) while they sent the wheel back to the manufacturer. They replaced the wheel with no argument (thankfully) and off I went. However, the wheel is only 6-8 weeks old and the same thing has happened again. The lug has come loose. Annoying!

So my questions are:
1. Do I go back to Burwood Cycleworld again (which I think I will as the wheel is under warranty)?
2. Has this happened to anyone else?
3. Am I better off just cutting my losses and getting new wheels?
4. If so, what wheels would you suggest?

Any help would be great!

if it's the same thing, take it back and ask for a wheel of equal value but different style. argue it's under waranty, and you don't want to have this issue every 6-8 weeks.
i did this with a fork for my fixie, i broke it 3 times (3 different forks) before i just said i want somehting new. no worries and no issues since.

Yep, take it back and see what the proprietor/Avanti can do for you. It may be better than you expect, or you can always turn on the heat later if the proposal isn't up to par. Let them absorb the cost, not you.

Update.

Burwood Cycleworld agree it is an issue and agree it is under warranty and needs to go back to Mavic. However, they can't guarantee they can give me a spare wheel with which to continue riding with. And the last time they sent my wheel back it took 3-4 weeks to be replaced.

Unfortunately, I don't have a spare. I'm trying to argue the point with them but they've said that it is not their issue, it's Mavic's. My response was that they have chosen to sell Mavic's and therefore have chosen to sell a faulty product. So far this argument has not worked and I am waiting for them to call me back.

In the meantime, if I don't get a spare wheel, is there anyone who might have one that I can rent/borrow please? I would be most appreciative and am happy to compensate you accordingly.

My other option is to simply buy a new set of wheels...
