In gearing up for the purchase of some new wheels I've been looking at tyres. Is it best to have a fully slick tyre or one with a little bit of tread. I'm looking at the Vittoria Pista Evo, which comes in both slick and slightly treaded. Will it make much of a difference? PBK doesn't have many, so I should probably act fast.

I've got a couple of those sitting on the floor of my room waiting to go on my pistas when my conti tempos wear out. I havn't yet used any of them so I don't know what they are like but I've been assured they're good. I got the one's with a little more tread rather than the full slicks for the outdoor tracks.

I noticed they have 10+ conti tempos but only in 19mm on PBK. I've always used 22mm tempos except on the disk which has a veloflex record which is 19 or 20mm. A Lot of people ride 19mm for everything, you just don't have as much surface area. The evo looks like a really nice tyre & at the end of the day if you get the wrong tyre they wear out anyway.

Are you looking for singles or clinchers ?

The Vittorias are 50g lighter, and I read somewhere that they got to 210 psi, which is 10psi higher then the contis. 50g doesn't sound like much, but it is on the outside of the wheel which is where its going to make the most difference. Although I doubt I'll notice it.

The spending never stops......

I think you will struggle to find a pump that will help you use that extra 10 psi! & really it's only a figure. But the evo are a nice tyre and a good choice...

I've been running 150psi at Canterbury. There doesn't seem to any noticeable benefit past 140 at Canterbury. Dunc Grey is smoother, so there should be some advantage in higher PSI there.

I aim at 160psi for opens at dunc. I think it is an attitude thing, pump the tyres up as hard as they will go, ride the bike as fast as it will go, no speed advantage is too little..

But then you need to invest in a good pump too. I have a silca super pista with the extra long barrel, not a paticularly cheap pump. THe costs just keep mounting...I guess a pump is something you can borrow, I always take one in the car to opens...

The Vittoria Pista Evo CS 22mm would be my pick mainly because they're in stock and good quality. I don't really like 19mm tyres too much, so for me it's 22mm, and the other instock option the Conti Sonderklasse cost too much. Basically, what simon said.

Offtopic- I just want PBK to get some more 49T Dura-Ace track chainrings, at $71 they can't be beat, any opinions on whether i should get a 48T to hold me over for a while? I need to put my order in so i can get my energy food supplies back up.

However the pump will last a long long time. I'm still using the floor pump I purchased in 2000 and I've haven't done anything to it.

Do metal floor pumps ever fail? I recall some a floor pump we had at home when I was small, it was at least 20 years old and full of rust.
