Re: Bloody Interesting Article - Genetics and Drugs in Sport

I agree it's an incredibly slippery slope. But I'd been labouring under the thinking that the playing field was a lot more level. It was far simpler when I was able to believe the winning athlete had just trained harder or had been coached better or dug deeper. It bothers me that they may have beate...

Re: Bloody Interesting Article - Genetics and Drugs in Sport

Yes, if it's medically supervised then it's safe, but even if they allow EPO to be in sport, athletes will still die. Why? Because of the desire to win, it doesn't have to come from the athletes themselves, sport in today's world is business, and what drives business? The desire to make money, so h...

Re: Bloody Interesting Article - Genetics and Drugs in Sport

So we do allow doping as long as it is for reason to bring people to normal levels. Define normal in the context of this discussion? I quote from the article "shouldn’t we have to come up with a good reason that one man is allowed to have lots of red blood cells and another man is not" So...

Re: Bloody Interesting Article - Genetics and Drugs in Sport

But I don't think the fact someone has worked hard levels the playing field. That's kinda the problem. We like to think it's all about years of training, graft and discipline to reach the top. And this takes people a long way, but perhaps we pay too much homage to the training and graft and overlook...

Yes, genetics are random or "lucky", but for me that's not really the end of it. Why would we celebrate the accomplishments of rider x when rider x has simply been dealt a massive and measurable advantage over their peers. Accomplishments must lose some lustre if they turn out to be merely...

Phenomenal shift from Tony Martin - 174 km time trial and only missed getting the win by 20 meters. Cancellara was the driving force to shut Martin down in last half km - cant help but think he just wanted to spoil win for Martin. Would have been massive boost for Martin before worlds

Re: Johnny Warren Jamberoo Classic - 10 February 2013

If anyone is feeling daft, me, Scott and a few mates are planning to try do the return journey (or at least a decent chunk of it( as well. Not 100% sure of the exact route we'll take

Re: Nite of the Spring Classics - Tour of Flanders

Good call on York Lane. Had a chat to the owner, and he's happy to open up on the night (he'll also broadcast the event through his own channels). Looks like the venue holds about 30 or so, so there should be a bit of atmosphere. So the slightly more refined plan is: Belgian Beer Cafe in Harrington ...

Great article by Paul Kimmage on the Lance Armstrong interviews: http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2013/jan/19/lance-armstrong-cycling For those that don't know the backstory on Kimmage, he was has publically called Pharmstrong a doper for years - they had a pretty solid stoush at the Tour of Californ...

Oooo. Like the idea of the Ronde, though I don't know the whereabouts of much Sydney pave.

Venue ideas? Someone suggested the velo hall, but I don't know it nor what mod cons it has. I was thinking the highly exotic Wests Ashfield might do the job?

Nite of the Spring Classics - Tour of Flanders

Lo All I'm a bit of a fan of the Classics races (MSR, LBL, Roubaix, etc), and this year the Tour of Flanders falls on Easter Sunday (March 31), so we've all got the day off the next day (hurrah). As such I was wondering if anyone wanted to make a night of it? Rough plan would be: (1) Go to Belgian B...

Thanks Greg and Dougie. Let people know what you are doing seems fair enough. But drifting to the back from the front of the huge Kurnell bunch yesterday and then overtaking them would put a big dent energy-wise in a break away plan! ;-) Hey, it worked for Bjarne Riis (aka Mr 64%) Doping references...

Re: Easy paced Kurnell ride - January 20

Others more experienced than I might have a different opinion, but I think the key here is communication. If you are dropping off, let someone know so the group doesn't send out a search party 5 mins later. If people want to break off the front for a sprint, make sure the people around you know and ...

Thinking of lashing out on a Garmin (in spite of the issues mentioned above). Any thoughts as to what is the go to model (200 v 500 v 800), and as to whether you need to by local because of geo-locks, etc?

And a big thanks to Mike for being the ride leader. Quick ride report - had a crew of around 22. Re: Time Trial/Triathlon Bike

Well for the price difference on the Felt you could afford to get a bike fit done (the place in Milsons Pt was great BTW) and still come out ahead. Admittedly I'd prefer the full Ultegra of the Giant than the FSA crankset. YMMV. Also don't know much about how the wheels stack up. As to the hubbard t...
