RAW starts this Friday! Woohoo!
The RAW forum is at http://www.rawtrack.com.au/ From there you can find links to general info explanations of the races, the points system etc.
Other possibly useful info for newbies.
You need a race licence to enter
You get 4 different races each week in your chosen division.
Arrive by 6pm to get signed in and to have a chance to warm up
If you've never raced on Dunc Gray or equivalent, you must? race in the novice division for at least the first week.
Last year, the juniors on restricted gearing mostly raced separate from the adults in division 5 (they had to split the field because of numbers)
Finishes around 9.30pm
There is a personal points tally over the 13 weeks
There is a club points competition which DHBC has won for the last few years
There's usually a big DHBC contingent and a great atmosphere!
The draft program is

Bring it!

There's only 2 short people in that picture so I can see where your calculation skills come from. lizannes now with Stg, but you've just declared war with all the DHBC shorties! Be careful out on the track BFV, midgets can be lethal. Be afraid...be very afraid!

Nah - only one novice last week but more are threatening to come. There's a few DHBC members who don't wear the DHBC jersey (or sit in the same area) so counting jerseys might not work. Then there was Sarah Zanzi and Ruby taking the trifecta in one race - that helps.

This week’s Program
• Round 1 warm up Scratch
• Round 2 no race (wheel-races run at best every second week pending sponsor)
• Round 3 Win’n’Out
• Round 4 Div 5 Scratch Race, Div 4-2 Madi-Lead Div 1 Madison

• Round 5 Combines + Time Blaster 8:45 for $50

Blue indicates Series Points scoring rounds

Explain these races
Win’N’ Out This is the opposite of a Miss’N’Out race. After a designated number of laps a whistle is blown for the first sprint. The winner of the first sprint is deemed the winner of the race and allowed to carefully withdraw from the race. Each proceeding lap sprint will produce the consecutive places from 2nd to 4th. Tip if you go for a sprint make sure you win it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28iqHThZ ... re=channel

Madilead- The pace in this race is set by a Madison team (see Madison). The bunch follows the Madison team for ??laps until, with 5 laps remaining the Madison leaders take off leaving the bunch to sought out the winner in scratch race style finish. The Idea of this race is to allow the lower grades to experience following a Madison change (which is a key skill in learning to ride a madison). The pace of this race can often change with the experienced leaders putting in a few hard attacks to stir up the bunch.

Madison- A high speed, two person continuous race relay. Think of tag team wrestling meets track cycling - while one partner is racing the other is resting at the top of the track. This race is named after Madison Square Garden in New York where the event was first held. Two man teams contest the event, which is typically an endurance event. Only one rider from each team is allowed in the race at a given time, meaning that teams must take it in turn each lap (or more) to have a rider in the race. Changeovers are quite dangerous, but impressive to watch when done well - one rider circles around waiting for his teammate, who joins hands and imparts his momentum to the slower rider. At RAW Track we usually ride this on a scratch race format reference http://www.cyclingnews.com
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XZ4_QbZ ... re=channel

Note $50 for time blaster. (No sponsor)
• The time blaster prize and jack-pot in 2014 is only $50
• In the past it has always been $100 but this year we have no sponsor.
• If a sponsor wants to pop in $300 we can go back to $100 per Time Blaster
• The (insert name) Time Blaster

Non Madison
• Div 1 riders who are not riding the madison are invited to ride the Div 2 Madi-Lead
• Whilst results will be recorded, only the top 4 div 2 riders will receive points towards the overall series.

Ok... So over the last two weeks 2 people have said the background music isn't up to scratch. Hence if two people say it that means 20 people are thinking it.
Music has always been a topic for discussion and abuse. So lets put it out there.

Step 1:Create a themed play list to last at least 2 1/2 hours
Step 2: email me pcraft@vtown.com.au by the Tuesday prior to the coming Friday.
Step 3: create a codename for your music: "DHBC Hipsters" or "Generation Y" so on, so on........ Your code name must identify with you somehow. That is you can not hide behind this codename.
Step 4: Put it on a device and "BRING IT" we will play it.

Each week in the "This Week" Post I will announce who is the guest DJ.

Image

Some basic rules
1. Minimal swearing (does not rule out isolated bad language)
2. No racist or hate based music (and the like)
3. Please be mindful of the broad spectrum of people RAW attracts
4. All other music is welcome unless it falls into the category of country or western, I hate that *censored*!

License will need to be sorted with Cycling NSW / Australia. You will at least need the receipt or license number as proof. If unsure give them a call.

Yes, you will need a gold license to be able to race. As Noel said you'll have to do that through the cycling Aus website. I believe 6 month licenses are now available for the remainder of this year, so it should cost you less than normal.

To console myself, I've been working on a playlist. Since it has to be representative of me, I was going to start with "Meat is Murder", but The Smiths are way too hipster for a suburban boy like me.

Image

So I thought I'd go for a complete slam poetry theme. Do you think I should start with this?

I'll work with anyone to beat a Dulwich Hill rider, even another Dulwich Hill rider.

"If you go (with a break), you can either win or not win. If you don't go for it, you definitely won't win."

—Jens Voigt's philosophy about breakaways.

http://www.rawtrack.com.au/index.php/topic,737.0.htmlTeams Night tonight! That means your race points go towards your team and the team points decide the draw for the Italian comp at the end of the night. Your team's italian pursuit placing determines the bonus points added to your TWE total. Confusing? Ah well, it's a chance to get to know riders from other clubs.

C'mon you LACC mob! Don't give up now - there's still 4 weeks to go.

Get 25 extra people to turn up each night and you'll be in with a chance. Even if they don't actually win anything.

Not happening. We have several people out with the flu, including me. I may miss my first night of RAW for 5 years. I'm not happy about it.

That video is hilarious!
In the past few years we've won the club championships at RAW purely due to weight of numbers

I just got back from my trip to the Apple Store:
Image

I had a nice chat with the Genius(TM) there about the finer points of beard grooming, and he showed me how to crunch some numbers on my brand new MacBook Air.

Anxious to try my newfound skillz (and not a moment before I put a mustache sticker on the Apple logo), I downloaded the RAW points spreadsheet and did some crunching just like the Genius(TM) taught me, which I am now able to upload thanks to this unprotected WiFi network I found near my cardboard box in St. Peters.

They show that even if a metric was used that didn't advantage the club due to attendance, we would still be sitting well ahead of LACC. Once you take the attendance points out, our average number of points won per rider (17.5) is a fair bit higher than theirs (13.182):

Code: Select all

Pos Club Riders Pts Avg Pts no base Avg no base 1 Penrith 8 773 96.625 213 26.625 7 Dulwich Hill 40 3770 94.250 700 17.500 11 Lidcombe 33 2625 79.545 435 13.182

Here's the whole table:

An interesting analysis. Please re-analyse to rank clubs by average weight and see where you are then.

(Actually, a couple of guys from SUVelo and Parra were talking to me about the club points and suggested that this sort of analysis should determine the club championships. It's obviously not going to work though, since very small clubs can skew the results in the same way that very big clubs skew the current point system.)

Trying to choke back the tears as the spoon goes back into the tub of ice cream for the last of the melted dregs.

You're absolutely right, I hadn't considered that. You can see exactly what you describe up the top of the table. There would be a perverse penalty for getting more riders along to have a go, which seems like it would be contrary to the spirit of the whole occasion.

I don't really think it should be done by average points per rider anyway, it was just a stupid metric specifically crafted to convey a smug sense of hipster superiority. I had a bit of a pow wow with the data scientist at work trying to find some really clever ways to (mis)represent the data to further the DHBC cause, but unfortunately everything else that we came up with just made LACC look good. Naturally, that spreadsheet was promptly deleted ;)

Nice work with tonight's video too, that was a total cack!

Great job throughout the series BFV!
I'm surprised Rockhold or Bisping haven't hired you to do their fight promotion yet.
See you RAW 2015!

Thanks blah, whoever you are. I encourage you to have a good look at the data and a think about a model for a better points system. I've got it on the back burner in my head and I suspect something will pop up while I'm on my morning commute. The model needs to encourage participation and attendance, but it also needs to give smaller clubs some recognition without making a mockery of the club concept by allowing "clubs" of 1 or 2 gun riders to win the championships. The ride off at the end, a great spectacle I'm sure you'll agree, is a good moderating mechanism and encourages broad participation from a club in the RAW season, but LACC is the biggest club in the state and we have difficulty in putting up the breadth of riders required! We also saw last night how even that moderating mechanism can be "gamed" with your 4 div 1 riders against our predominantly div 4 and 3 riders. The first few riders in the Italian were having a close race, then it became lopsided very quickly.

It's an interesting problem and something worth having a good think about. I might write it up and set it as an assignment in my critical thinking lecture for semester 1 next year. Maybe I can crowd source an answer. Anyway, thinking hat off, hipster suck etc. Happy to have a chat about this one day over a soy latte.

Yes, I would really like to mock people who have no sense of humour and who do professional violent things to people. Moreover, I don' t think that "satire" is a word that fans of this particular "sport" understand outside of describing parts of a car.

Thanks for the props. See you next year. I love that I can insult you guys every week for two season and you thank me for it at the end.
