I''ll express an ummm expression of interest. Mainly on the strength of being marooned in Adelaide at that time this year, but having to work every day, and making a mental note that whatever happened I was going put in for leave for the corresponding week in 2014.
(And what else is there to do at that time of year? Hill repeats on Mt Buffalo anyone???)

Thanks for the heads up Dougie.

I should be in Adelaide again in 2014 for the TdU. Just need to sort leave from work for the week and then I will lock it in.

Is the bupa challenge only available for tour down under stage 4?
the website is such a pain to navigate around..
Also, what will be the best way to get back to the starting lane after finishing it?

Oh am I right in assuming the dhbc domestique thingy is for the bupa challenge? Or is the club arranging own trip to finish all the tour down under stages kind of thing?

Yes the Bupa Challenge is just for stage 4, you can get back using private car (that someone else has driven) or by Bus. (that the tour puts on for a fee) oh and you must go to the little island just off the coast of victor harbour, you can get there by jetty.

Most stages are easy to get to and back from town and Dougie usually has a plan for most stages so stay tunes here for more information.

Chris did the bus last year and I think it all went pretty smoothly.

I was lucky enough to have friends who picked me up (and I hope will do so again this year).

Or... You could ride home!

As Jo notes, you will need to arrange your transport back to Adelaide post ride. I have seen some riders do the trip back on the bike. They all share that haunted "I ride 250km at a time" look about them. They are clearly insane. Give the TDU people a call to discuss it. They are extraordinarily helpful and will give you all the options.

As Julio notes, In the past i have come up with an itinerary of what I plan to ride. I lived in Adelaide 20 years ago so i only get lost a few times. I also have a few local mates whom act as guides. I tend to ride out to see each stage incorporating strategically consumed coffee and cake along the way. Anyone is welcome to join me. Bare in mind Adelaide is very hilly and you should be fit before you arrive or else your days in the saddle are not fun. It's also bloody hot. Have a look at my TDU posts from previous years to get a flavour of the event. I will be posting more information over the coming months.

I'm all done. 154km option.

And the highlight of my registration is that the ride starts from Unley this year that just happens to be where I'm staying! So no 4am alarms and sleep-riding for me next year.

Righto!
Entered for the 154km, and signed up for the mighty Team DHBC Domestics.

Andrew

PS the little island off the coast of Victor is called "Granite Island". Worth a look. not sure if you can ride a bike over the jetty, though - but I haven't been there for ages.

Hidie Ho TDUers

If you have just had your leave pass signed off for the Tour Down Under there is time to join the Team as the mighty DHBC Domestiques ride again. See the note below from the TDU people. More news to come in the following weeks.

cheers

Dougie

Hi Douglas

Hope you have been well and the team’s training is on track. I just thought I’d pop you an email to let you know that DHBC DOMESTIQUE currently has 4 team members registered. They are as follows:

Andrew Belford
Charles Pickett
Douglas Kirkham
Skinner Joanna

Generally we only take teams of 5 or more so if there is anyone else who has registered as part of the team that perhaps hasn’t put in the team code in their booking, please provide their full name and booking reference number (BZ-xxxxxxxxx).

Team registrations don’t close until the 24th of October at this stage but I’m trying to get a head start on working with the teams to register anyone that may have already registered as an individual that may want to ride in a team.

If you have any questions, as always – please shoot me an email or give me a call.

I’ll be in touch again once team registrations have closed off.

Kind regards

Tamara

Sounds great! You have my mobile number.

Flights booked, I'm flying in on the Tuesday night and flying out on Monday night. I'm staying with my mates in Fullarton, next suburb from Unley. Dougie, you might remember Dave from last year? Staying with them and trying to convince him to come and do the ride.

I'll pm you my number Dougie. I'm flying in the Friday before the race and leaving the public holiday Monday arvo. I'm staying at West Lakes and I'll be sharing my riding time cruising with my Uncles Tri-club (Lakes) the store riders (Cheeky Velosport Riders) and you guys.

In regards to the Bupa Challenge I'd like the group to stay together for as long as possible...middies pace if we can and stopping for all punctures.

Hi Dougie & fellow TDUers,

pm sent to Dougie with with my phone number.

I'm keen to do miscellaneous rides with whoever during the week. Not sure of the timing, but intend to stay around the whole week, although likely flying back mid- Sunday.

Intend to stay with family near cnr Portrush/Glen Osmond Rds, so that should be reasonably convenient to get to rides.

Haven't yet figured out the logistics of getting back from Victor after the community ride, but as a plan B I have accommodation overnight there.

I'm up for that. It was super tough last year with just Dougie and I. We tried to hop onto groups which didn't work so well. The 430am start didn't help either! Still, Dougie and I had a grand old time together.

Anybody want their bike transported to Adelaide? I got an email from a chap today:

"Sorry to bother you but I was hoping you could pass on information to your members that might be going to the Tour Down Under (TDU).

I am a triathlete (please don't hold it against me) and cyclist and am driving to Adelaide for the tour down under. I have a few spots left in a truck transporting bikes that I am going in and I was thinking some of your members who might be going to the TDU would be interested."

PM or email me if you want his details and I'll pass them on.

So what are you planning to do to rid yourself of those pesky Christmas kilos? The Paleo Diet, nothing but water and fresh air for three days, or perhaps a dose of the squirts? Well that may work, but those remedies won’t be nearly as much fun as the Tour Down Under 2014.

After extensive research, many days spent in the wind tunnel and countless hours pouring over Strava segments, the TDU 2014 spectator rides have been decided upon. A heady concoction of distance and elevation, of light and shadow and of cheeky sauvignon blancs and pie floaters. The hardy riders of the DHBC Domestiques will be rewarded with pleasure and pain. Let the fun begin!

This is no training camp, this is rock and roll. What floats your boat 10km descents, 20% climbs or maybe jumping on the back of Ag2r La Mondiale bunch with their team car covering your lantern rouge? So far nine riders have registered for the DHBC Domestiques. With others coming along to swell the numbers

The Event commences with the Peoples Choice Classic on Sunday night. Twilight racing at its best. It’s a prologue stage of sorts determining who will wear the Ochre Jersey for stage 1 on Tuesday. The Classic has a new route this year along the Torrens River. Something new for those who arrive early ne pas?

I will probably arrive in time to see the race on the tele and wrestle the cork from neck of a sly bottle of South Aussie Savvy B. I will put the bike back together after its journey from Sydney and iron my knicks. A word to the wise. Don’t clean your bike the day before packing it to fly. If it smells remotely “degreasery” the check-in storm troopers will say beastly things to you and prevent you flying. Also carrying CO2 cartridges can have a negative effect on you scheduled departure. Buy them in the Adelaide.

Monday 20th of January heralds my first ride. No racing on today so there are plenty of options available. I will probably do a hills ride. 50KM and a 1000m of climbing. A nice little entrée into the famed Adelaide Hills covering Norton Summit, Mt Lofty lookout and Mt Osmond. A couple of solid climbs (627m), with some 12% hurty parts and a lovely descent to make it all worthwhile. Plenty of other options available also, with beaches and Glenelg being just a couple of popular ones.

Tuesday 21st of January is Stage 1. A Barossa Stage, too far to ride to so I will be driving up with the family in air conditioned comfort. We’ll have a little lunch and watch a little riding. I will probably do a short beaches coffee ride first thing in the morning. Riding north west to outer harbour, turn south for a run along the coast. A short stop in Glenelg for a coffee and zip back into town on Anzac Hwy. maybe 30 km if you’re lucky and a total of 25m of climbing!

Wednesday 22nd of January is Stage 2. The fun begins in earnest. Stirling is by far and away my favourite finish town. It sits atop the mythical Crafers Bike path climb which becomes a wonderful 10km descent later in the day. Today we will ride to Hahndorf in the Hills for lunch and the first viewing of the Peloton, we’ll take on Germantown Hill after they pass by and meet up with them again as they hammer through Aldgate. Our final viewing will be at the finish in Stirling. Once it’s all done we will climb out of Stirling via Ayres Hill Rd aka “The Bastard Hill” and enjoy the magic descent down to Adelaide. If we are lucky and so far I have been lucky every time, we will ride down the hill in the company of the pros as they ride back to the Hilton. Having a Team car guard your back as you do 60kph down Glen Osmond Rd is pretty cool. It’s not a big day in the saddle as far as distance goes however you will do some climbing. Enjoy your evening with a nice glass of the local tipple in a restaurant of your choice.

Thursday 23rd of January is Stage 3. Gorge Rd and Corkscrew Hill Rd are on the menu today. Who cares how we get there. Plenty of options available to us. One thing is for certain. Bring your Elephant Onesie or wear your DHBC Mankini because we will be on the roadside on Corkscrew Hill as the Peloton climb past us. Our 15 seconds of fame awaits, along with some chaffing that I would rather not get into. Rest up tonight. Get some carbs into you. Tomorrow is the BIG ONE!

Friday 24th of January. Fire up for stage four. 154.5KM of fun. You will be climbing 400 vertical metres in the first 12KM or so. There are some 12% hurty parts before you get to some downhill respite. Then a pleasant 15 KM climb up Mt Compass and all that is before we hit the King of the Mountain at about Kilometre 100. Did I mention that this climb hits 17% at one point? The last time I rode this stage in this area it was 44 degrees and the organisers were dumping water bladders on the roadside every 5KM. Oh and the cross winds are so fierce that I have seen riders blown off their bikes. I’m behind you all the way…….

Once you arrive enjoy the mist tent, eat your lunch, eat someone else’s lunch and then go and buy another lunch. Find a shady spot and enjoy the sprint finish as the peloton rolls into town. Enjoy dinner if you can stay awake that long.
Saturday 25th of January. Stage five is held in the McLaren Vale. Drive down if you want or ride down if you can. There’s a great bike path that travels parallel to the expressway. If you plan to ride back, a word to the wise don’t listen if anyone tells you thay know a short cut through the hills to get home. Just ask Jo Skinner, she’s still having counselling in an effort to get over last year’s ride home. The mythical Willunga Hill is on the cards and there’s a beer tent at the top!

Sunday 26th of January and the final Stage. Like the prologue this is a new route and it looks pretty good to me. If you are still around then lap up the Tour Village and find a nice spot for the final stage.

Whatever you do enjoy yourself and I’ll see you on the road

Hi Dougie,
As mentioned today the Bolton and Hocknell families are going to be there Friday to Friday. Tom and Zanzi are taking part in the national junior track racing on Friday / Saturday and then we are staying on for some fun at TDU. (I thin Alan and Ruby may be there too...). We are staying at Flinders Uni, which is about 7 Km's south of the city.
Thanks for all the info in this thread. We look forward to some riding with you.
We have a challenge we haven't yet sorted... We are flying and need to get both a road and a track bike there for Tom. Does anyone have space for an extra bike? I note that Eleri has had contact from someone with possible transport and will message her.
Cheers

Hi Simon
We are flying also and my bike is flying with me. My bike fits in with our baggage limits. Is flying not an option? Feel free to call me on

Cheers

Hi Doug,
We are flying Virgin so that we can each take a bike. Issue with Tom is that he is riding the National Junior Track Series event Fri / Sat and then riding around Adelaide on a road bike with the rest of us for the following week - so we need to transport 5 bikes but can only take 4 on the plane. We don't have time to drive.
The Eleri contact doesn't have space, but is checking with mates. I'm sure we'll find a way. If you get any ideas let me know.
Thanks,
Simon

Hidey Ho TDUers

Two wonderful support acts are being staged this coming weekend and into early next week prior to the TDU starting

The National Junior Track Series is being staged this weekend. Our Club is being well represented by Tom Bolton, Ruby Reidy-Miller and Zanzi Hocknell. If you are in Adelaide I am sure they would benefit from your support. Make sure you wear your Jersey!
Friday 17th and Saturday 18th of January 2014 at the Super Drome

The Santos Women's Cup is being staged Sunday to Tuesday inclusive. Our Club is being represented by Lizanne Wilmott. As a strong track cyclist whom only knows how to turn left, I am hoping the course runs in an anti clockwise direction.
Get your jersey out and scream your support.

Sunday 19 January Time: 5.45 – 6.25pm approx. Location: Victoria Drive, Adelaide (this is within the city)
Monday 20 January Time: 12midday – 3.00pm approx. Location: Murray St. near Middle St, Angaston (start and finish) This is out of town in the Barossa Valley
Tuesday 21 January Time: 7.00 – 7.45pm approx. Location: Prospect Rd, Prospect This is a five kilometres from the Tour Village in the centre of town.

Good luck and safe riding to all our competitors.
