Yep

I posted about this last week and heard nothing. I was going to do Waterfall, Helensburg, Stanwell Tops, then back through the RNP to Audley.

I'm in for a monday ride as I won't be able to go on Sunday.
The Stanwell Tops loop looks good, thought I peel off to the Gong.

I intended to, but as it is not a certainty that I will be riding, I thought I would hold off. If it all comes together nicely, I will latch on somewhere at Sutherland. What time approx. will you be going through Sutherland? and will you be doing the big dipper or not?

Depends on who else is coming.

If there are others, then I would expect a 6am depart from Mick Mazza's, so going past Sutherland at about 7am. If there are no other takers, then I would be leaving home earlier, and going past at about 6:40am or so.

In either case, I can see us going through the Big Dipper.

6am is a bit early for me. I was thinking 6.30am at least, maybe even 7am. The ride sounds alright, though i was considering going north as an option, but i'll have to think on it.

I would prefer to stick to an early departure. Monday is the last day of a long weekend, on top of the fact that School starts again next week. I think that the roads will be quite busy.

By having an earlier start means that we would finish earlier, so hopefully we can avoid more of the traffic.

I'm semi interested. It depends if there is any food involved & how casual the ride is? I"m riding the Sydney Cup on wheels Sunday Avo & plan to go to the track monday night, so a nice scenic ride could be tempting?

My fitness levels are pretty good minus my crash last weekend so a scenic ride could be a relatively solid pace?? No big mountains though minus the essentials of the national park???....

There's always an opportunity for food after the ride if not during.

I mainly want a nice easy ride, hills are just there to keep it interesting.

If i have to i'll do 6am, though i'm still tempted to head north if there was any interest.

OK, so shall we say 6am at Mick Mazza's, which means that we will be passing Loftus Oval at about 7am to pick up Fred.

Planned Route is Waterfall, Helensburg, Stanwell Tops and then back through the RNP, we can exit at either Waterfall or Audley.

My vote is for an Audley exit. The possibility exists for the group to split at the bottom of Waterfall and regroup at Sutherland. Off the top of my head, it is 22km from the bottom of Waterfall to Audley, which is about 40-50 minutes. From the bottom of Waterfall, I think that it would take you about 30 minutes to get to minimum to get to Sutherland.

I'll be waiting on the Princes Highway next to the Audley Entrance at around 7:00. See you then.

For those who may want an easier ride, there'll be some people just riding to waterfall, leaving Micks at 6:30am.

I went through the RNP clockwise today, and while I was at it, I did some timings.

Although I was doing some of it the wrong way, I suspect that the times would still be pretty close.

From the Entrance to the RNP to the bottom of Waterfall was about 45 minutes, so I would expect a return leg to be about the same.

From the bottom of Waterfall to Sutherland, it would be about 30 minutes, but that is for me, who takes about 11-12 minutes to climb up that hill. So, at a guess, I think that the idea of the group splitting at the bottom of Waterfall and regrouping at Sutherland isn't a stupid one for those who want to have an easier ride.

In either case, it is something that can be sorted out tomorrow.

I'm going to ride the declared route, but I'm going to leave home based on what time I actually wake up, so there's a good chance you won't see me unless you are fixing a flat or too.

Ride Report

There were 4 at the start at Mick Mazza's this morning. Simon (who got his road bike out of long term storage :-)), Eugen, Paul and I. Surprisingly, a strong Southerly had picked up at about 5:30am or so. Subsequently, the ride started off tough.

We picked up Fred, George and Eddie at Loftus Oval, and promptly put them on the front. We rode a fairly solid pace to Helensburg, but because of the wind, the speed wasn't that high.

From Helensburg, we headed down to Stanwell Tops and had a brief stop over at Bald Hill to refil our water bottles. We had a fantastic dash through the Park to the bottom of Waterfall. There, Simon, Paul and Eddie decided to take the easier option and rode up to Waterfall and then on to Sutherland. Meanwhile, Eugen, George, Fred and I kept on through the Park. By this stage, because we were heading north, we had a pretty solid tail wind, and as a result kept the speeds in the high 50's form just beyond the Garie Beach turnoff and Flat Rock Creek. Even the climb out of Flat Rock Creek was fast because of the wind assistance.

We all regrouped at Sutherland, and from there Fred, Eddie and George went their own way. There was some confusion from Eugen and Paul who originally followed Fred and Eddie and were going the wrong way, luckily there were corrected and soon caught up with Simon and I.

The way back was pretty speedy due to the tailwind again.

Overall I had a blast on this ride today. The run through the Park was just great fun today, I think I was grinning just about the whole time. I know that Fred was pretty shot by the time we got to Audley and he put in a good effort despite this.

This was the first time that Paul had been anywhere near the National Park, and from speaking to him he did enjoy it.

The wind was a Catch 22. It made it hard on the way to Helensburg, but it made it so much fun through the National Park.

At the end of the day, I ended up with about 120km on the clock, so I assume that Simon and Paul would have had about the same, Eugen ended up with about 150km I think.

Eugen was also giving his Oregon Scientific Camera a test run, so I look forward to seeing the results from that.

I woke up a bit too late, so took the easier option at 6:30 and just went to Waterfall.

We had 7 starters when Kieran found us just past tempe, and picked up one more on our way back.

You're right about the wind though, tough on the way out, but a wonderful ride on the return leg.

Quite tired by the time I reached home, 154km on the Comp.
My shootings are, put it mildly, crude but some downhill scenes are quite lively and closer shots than even the TdF motorcycle provides.
They are six files ranging in size from 24kB to 632kB. Has somebody an idea how I can quicksmart make these available to DHBC viewers? I might try Youtube but from there you cannot dowload it for editing.

Depends on the file format the videos are in and I suspect the files are significantly larger than 24 and 632kB respectively. YouTube is probably the best service for sharing but you can always edit before you upload.

Yes they are 24 to 632MB (Megabytes).
I'm currently uploading one (72MB) on Youtube. But this one is not really exciting, just introducing the riders along the Princess Highway. Uploading takes forever; Youtube is limited to 100MB. Thus I give up on Youtube.
The exciting shots, the two decents at maximum speed, are 231 and 632MB.
I have no editing software; Fuad said he will send me some help with this.
On the other hand editing, apart from taking time, I guess would also take out the 'real time feel' and would make it impossible for the viewer to know which rider the camera is chasing invisibly up the road.

231 and 632Mb files are pretty large even by internet standards. I am not familiar with video editing programs on Windows but I'd suggest that you should at least do a limited edit and/or resave into a smaller file for distribution.

I ended up choosing to do the 6.30am ride, based on my legs being not up to the full thing. Was intending to do a recovery style ride, but that tail wind on the mad mile was way too tempting. Did my PB in the sprint too.

For Windows Video Editing, best bet is VirtualDub.

It isn't the easiest to use, but there are plenty of guides on the web, and you can't beat the price... Free.

I sympathise your situation. Irrespective of the software used, playing around with video files has always been frustrating for me. One reason why the home video camera is now hardly used.

BTW, didn't find the clip you uploaded but did find Geoff's clip on a potential club song.

Here is a Direct Download Link for Virtual Dub.

See if that works for you.

Weiyun is right though, I have had fun and games trying to do video editing, it can be a frustrating and unrewarding experience at times.

As Google bought YouTube last year sometime, I suspect that there is no difference between using YouTube or Google Video.

You can do a lot with the video before converting it to flash. Logic dictates that the cleaner the video before it gets heavily compressed, the better it should look after being heavily compressed. Most of us are doing hand held, which means that a lot of bytes are wasted with a moving background, the deshaker filter will usually help considerably.

Not sure about that. For a start, Google Video's image size is larger. Better quality based on what I've seen. But I haven't explored those services much as I just don't particularly enjoy videos. Static photos are my preference.

Hey Eugene

I know I said I would, but James beat me to it. It even looks like I am a century late.

One other video editting software you could use is Windows Movie Maker. Its not fancy but does the job and comes on your Windows operating system.

It is accessible through Start>Programs>Accessories>Windows Movie maker.

Hey guys I"ve got to thank you for organizing that ride on Monday. It did me the world of good. I rode the track on Monday night & was still producing some real speed & now mid week the fatigue is beginning to clear... I'll be ready for Clarence st cup on Saturday night with some good form. It's always impossible to tell how the body will be on the night but you never know there could be a good result there....& I may ride the park a bit more in the future???

What do you guys normally do post ride after long rides? I used to think rest was the answer... But now I find I riding is the best answer...

used to think that too, but now I ride high on post-ride adrenaline and endorphins. But seriously, what you said makes sense: active recovery.

Having done a few Cycling Holidays, I have learnt (the hard way) that if you have more riding coming up, it is better to keep riding rather than take just a single day.

Look at the Tour de France (and other GT's), even on the rest days, the riders still go out for a ride, they just do lower intensity and distance.

I found that if I have a single day off in the middle of hard riding, then it isn't enough to get a good recovery, and your body slows down too much. Subsequently when you do get back on the bike, it bloody hurts.

Forgot to say that for the $160 you can film for only 3 minutes on internal memory! So I pinched the 1MB flash card out of my missus' digital camera and, bingo, was in business to do 32min in highest quality (VGA 640x480Pixels, 30 frames per s). I could do 400min in lowest quality 160x120,15fps). My ride to and from work (total 90min) just fills the flash card in medium quality (320x240, 15fps).

Also you need two AA rechargeables; the camera seems to be quite hungry

Bit off topic, but if anyone is after any solid state memory for cameras, digital video cameras etc, let me know and I will give you a price.

My company (Express Online) sells SanDisk products, and I am able to buy directly from them. Compared to RRP, I can often get it about 40% cheaper.
