Looks like I am going to have to have a knee athroscopy to fix the meniscal tear I've been carrying around for a number of years. It's flaring up at all the wrong times, which is mostly during times of overuse like in Tassie. There are some cysts clumped around it that are causing most of the pain which will need to be removed.

Wondering if anyone hear has had similar surgery before and how your recovery went. I'm pretty terrified of taking time off the bike right now, more due to the psychological and emotional effects than physical. I know I can build fitness back up once it's better but I always go into this depression and eat a crap load of chocolate if I have even a couple of days off. Need some ideas of good activities I can do while the knee is out of action!

Take up full time beer drinking and partying, perhaps? ;) Can't see that ending too well...

Oh the other thing is the timing of it. I was thinking of trying to make it so I'm out of action during the TDF and the really cold horrible weeks we usually get in July when getting on the bike in the morning is difficult.

You will be surprised on the recovery period. I had mine about 10 years ago now when i was playing football (soccer). It took me only 3 weeks to start full training again, 4 weeks to start playing. The stationary bicycle aided the recovery. Once the skin is healed and the swelling gone you can basically jump on the bike to rebuild muscle.

Wow, that pretty awesome news! With that time frame getting it done at the start of Le Tour makes perfect sense.

I had one, but it also involved an ACL repair which sounds bigger than what you are having done. Had the ACL end of November, ran the City to Surf in August the next year. Wasn't quite as fit as I would have liked and threw up in fact, but not because of my knee.

I hate swimming so much. Please help me to not hate it! Life would be so much easier if I enjoyed it.

How coincidental, i was just talking about this with a friend of mine like 30mins ago. He said it's key hole surgeory and you'd be back to 100% in 6 weeks at longest.

What does a meniscal tear feel like? Can you describe the pain?
