Personally, I think that the reason they succeeded is because they offered a good service and "customer experience". Bike shops live and die by word of mouth. I know several bad and good shops, I'll slag off the bad ones and praise the good ones whenever anyone asks me. In some cases, I haven't set foot in the bad ones for years, and I'll still slag them off.
