My bike is running 2003 Campagnolo Chorus.

I can get Chorus 2013 for $1,300 AUD through Bike Bug.

Why shouldn't I? (Besides the obvious answer of I can't afford it).

First question would be is your rear wheel compatible with an 11 speed cassette?

That's a good deal!
11 speed will work on a 9 or 10 speed hub.
If it ain't broke etc.
Have a great ride,

11 speed will work with most 9 or 10 speed hubs but certainly not all. Also other things to consider is that you will likely need a new chain breaker or have to borrow one.

As far as I understand, Campy 9/10 hubs from 2002 on work with 11sp ok; earlier hubs may have a lock-ring/clearance issue (I've never encountered one).

The 11sp chain breaker is able to peen the chain pin (like a rivet), which you must do for a Campy 11sp chain. You can get third-party Campy-specific 11sp quick links so you don't have to do this. Otherwise, there are a whole lot of cheaper 11sp compatible chain breakers out there – I have one, it cost $20 and works well.

A new groupset is cheaper than a new bike, but it makes your old bike feel like a new bike. And in six months (or sensible financial reconstruction time), you can build a really new bike with your old group set. Win-win.

So yes, it is a really bad idea.

Apparently, You don't need a chain breaker to break the 11 speed chain , 10 speed chain breakers are ok.
To join the chain, however you need them or go with kmc chain with tool free one use quick links.

Not a good idea, once you use the new ergo shaped levers it is hard, maybe impossible, to accept using others.

The wheels are 2009 or so Campagnolo Euros 2-Way Fit.

The Frame is a 2011 Cervelo S3.

Is it still a bad idea?

OK, they've got 2014 Chorus in stock now for the same price, so I'm going to finally upgrade the components.

I've got a 10-speed Campagnolo chain tool, is that still usable for the 11 speed chain? Or should I get an 11-speed tool as well? What about BB Wrench, I seem to remember hearing that the Campagnolo and Shimano tool are interchangable, is that the case? I also seem to remember hearing that the 11-speed Campagnolo chains weren't the best and that there was another one that was a better choice, does anyone have any comments about that?

I've got a chain whip, cassette tool, cable cutters etc so apart from the BB tool, and a possibly new chain breaker, are there any other specialist tools that I'd need to be able to do this change over?

Never had a problem with a Campagnolo 11 speed chain, I use the Lezyne 11 speed chain tool which costs much less than the Campag version. You can break an 11 speed chain with a 10 speed tool, you could also use KMC missing links - the 11 speed ones are not reusable. The BB tool for the external cups is the same as the Shimano, also 10mm? allen wrench for the big bolt that connects the cranks.
Have fun,
Peter

To install the 11 speed chain, you'll need a compatible chain tool. Old Campag 10 speed chain tool will not work, at least not be able to reliably engage the pin. A safety issue, not worth thinking about it. The BB tool I have should you need to borrow it. Not sure if it's compatible with Shimano but you may be right.

I am quite impressed how long your gruppo has lasted with all the riding you do. How many times have you had to replace and service the G-spring over this period?

I ended up purchasing a peening tool. So I'll use the 10 speed tool that I have to install the pin, and the new tool to peen it. That's the difference between the 10 and 11 speed tool. I actually found a post by Geoff on another site that mentions that.

I've changed the G-Springs in my levers 3 or 4 times, and I did pretty much all of the springs at least once.

I did about 60,000km on it all up between 3 different frames.

Not bad going for a groupset! Now, when will I be able to wear mine out to justify an upgrade? Probably by the time 12 speed comes along. ;)

Well, I'll add to the list of things where I'm overly ambitious.

I stripped the bike down yesterday, started the install, and got very stuck at installing the cranks, I can't get the left crank to fit into the BB Cup, it will go in fine without the spring washer and seal, but with them, I can't get it to fit. It's going to the bike shop tomorrow for them to finish.

Plus, my mood didn't improve when I realised that I'd lost one of the internal frame routing inserts. I suspect that it's at the bottom of a wheelie bin.

The irony is that I spent money on tools so that I could do everything myself, and the end result is that I should have just saved my money and given it to a shop.

You are not the first. I think many of us have done similar. ;)

On the BB. Did you measure the width on your Cervelo? Is that within spec? Otherwise the cups on both sided are wound up pretty tightly IIRC.

Didn't even think of that, but given that the frame is 2010, I'd be surprised if it isn't within spec.

On a side note, I saw another one of the limited editions. I got a Thor Husvold Green Jersey Edition, they made 222 of them (the number of points he got in the Green Jersey in 2009), I got number 29, and I saw a guy on the weekend on 119.

You beat the other "guy"! ;)

What's different with the special edition? Where did they decorate?

Basically it's green highlights instead of red.

Very nice! Could be argued for the Australian green too.

Suddenly I don't feel so bad about not being able to do this build myself.

I was supplied with the wrong BB Cups.
