Just back from a family camping trip to Central Australia. Which was an awful lot of fun.

There's an outfit called Outback Cycling (http://www.outbackcycling.com) that has bike hire stand at the Uluru Cultural Centre. And also does more adventurous MTB stuff.

Apparently lots of families are riding the rock now: it's easier on the kids in the heat. I certainly found a quick lap far more comfortable than my walking circuit the day before.

$30 per person gets you three hours on a beach cruiser - probably this http://www.electrabike.com/bikes/townie ... -7d?g=mens - and a helmet. BYO water: you'll need it.

I strapped my GoPro to the stem and shot this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OZmn0blKkg&edit=vdNot riveting, by any means, but illustrative. And of course it is on Strava: http://www.strava.com/activities/201235410

I'd still walk the Rock first, just to have the chance to see the details. But the ride was very nice.

We flew to Alice Springs to hire was the only way. If you chose to BYO, the roads in won't scare anyone or shake your bike to bits. Nicely paved all the way. I suspect most DHBCers will want something more challenging that the flat 12kms at the other end.
