hey changed a flat tyre on my touring bike, it blew when i put the pump on to see how pumped james Fowler had pumped it. I think he pumped it too much.

Sorry Glenno, I'm back on top. A flat at the omnium on Saturday - not the track bike, my commuter. I was blowing up the back tyre and the valve busted. Marion, keen to get on the board came to the rescue and Amy was not far behind. Figuring I had plenty of points to share I let them go at it, and quite a sight it was too! Especially Marion's hands at the end of it all ... I warned her I hadn't washed my bike in a while.

Do Marion and Amy get a point for being female?

I'll add Timyone to the board too.

This goes down as my equal worst month ever in terms of flats (did 6 last November as well). I was running late for the race on Saterday at Heffron, so I drove there. Started riding from my car to the shed to register and realised I was riding on the rim. Because I drove I didn't figure I need to take any spares, so with about 5 minutes before the start of the race I was in a mad rush to get a spare tube or any tools to change tube.

In case any of you are stuck in this predicament, here is the solution, Bucko will sell you a nice Michellin tube, there is a track pump in the canteen and there were some tyre leavers behind the desk where you register.

Now I have taken some drastic measures to ensure that February is puncture free. 2 new tyres on my race wheels that I am only going to use for racing. Vredstein fortezza comp (the one that you can pump to 160psi if your rims can cope with that pressure.)

2 new tyres for my training wheels, these are very thick 25mm tyres, I think that they are maxxis Detonator.

That should ensure a puncture free February.

Hi! I got another two flats on the tour, totalling five all up. I repaired them all, but learned that Lindsay doesn't since he's experienced patches melting off on long descents.

Can't really provide any more info except that Lindsay said either he (or George) had experienced patches melting off on long descents in Laos - brakes had heated up the rims and heat had transferred to the tyres and tubes.

But is a patch actually meltable?

I think the reference is to the glue.

I think the reference is to the glue.
But its supposed to have been vulcanized together.

Out of all the criticisms for patching, this is the first time I've heard of this mode of failure.

umm i changed tubes. Dont know for the last one, it was a slow leak. No idea for either of the last two, i think the first two were wrong sized tubes in the tyres.

Ok, first one for me for 2009. Small puncture hole caused by an unknown object whilst riding on Mona Vale Rd. Further up the road, there were at least 3 riders with their bunches carrying out roadside repairs.

Flat in Surry Hills this morning.

In a rare act of kindness a guy who lives on Bourke street offered to give me a tube when he saw me changing tyres out from of his house.

Flat on the way to heffron yesterday, result of dodgy Continental valve. Better to get a flat on the way than to be the poor guy in B grade who rolled his tubular off the rim with half a lap to go. Ruined my race but at least I didn't go down.

Good point, however the rules don't actually specify the type of vehicle. However if the flat was fixed by someone else.....

I beleive that the rules state it would only count if she was a member of DHBC.

So unfortunatly you will have to be stisfied with the already massive lead you have over the rest of the field :D

I'm on the board with a big shard of glass cutting straight through a brand new rear tyre on the way to Waterfall in the pouring rain this morning. What a fantastic memory that is. Matt

Last year I got 44 flats, so at half points I could still win this competition, but being the gentleman I am, I'll be more than happy to have you win it glenno.

First one in Newtown, a small hole, possibly caused by a bit of wire or the like, Second one in the CBD, cause unknown.

Well, I had a shocker today.

I headed off at about 5:30am for Wollongong, aiming to do a ride I hadn't done since Easter in 2007.

I got my first flat half way down the Waterfall hill, I hit something with the front wheel, and it cut through and gave me a flat. I changed it out and continued on my way.

Wollongong is currently hosting Uninats, the Australian Unicycling Convention, so I rode in and chatted to some of the unicyclists I knew, I also asked while I was there if the shop (unicycle.com) had any tubes for a road bike, no such luck.

So, set off up Mount Kiera, made it all the way to the top, and then turned around and headed for the F6 back to Sydney. Going down the second roller, and the shoulder basically turns to *censored*, the bike is bouncing and rattling, and it took me a while before I realised that I had a rear flat. It had gone down with a snakebite, and it went flat that quickly that I didn't even realise it. So Changed that one out with my emergency tube, and hoping that I didn't get any more flats, set off again.

Then on the old Princess Highway between Helensburgh and Waterfall, I had another front flat. Not looking forward to having to patch at the side of the road. Then luck finally struck. I had only seen about 10 cyclists all up to this point, and here were two of them going the other way. 1 transaction later, and I was the proud owner of a new tube. Swapped that one in, and again kept riding.

When I got home, I found that the rear tyre was soft. I haven't taken it off yet to find out if it really is flat, but I suspect that it is going to need repairing as well.

So 175km, 3 (possibly 4) flats.

Can anyone better that?

James

edit: confirmed the 4th flat. The coffee table now has 4 tubes under it's legs, I still have another 4 tubes to patch, and one of them is a pinch flat, so that is going to require two patches.

Just to update. Luckily mine wasn't in one of those mysterious back lanes we were riding through. Though i also had a 2nd one of those notorious Maxxis bulges.

Also updated jimmy's, including the possible 4th flat.

I'm claiming four:
1. Slow leak on track bike - self repair
2. The one that blew when I was preparing for the B2B - self repair
3. Puncture during the B2B, - helped by breakdown van then replaced with ...
4. Dud tube tried then discarded during the B2B

That's 3.5 points, right?

2-4, FWIW, all happened inside 24 hours.

i beleive that's 2.5 or 3 points for 3 punctures, according to this rule...
The bike must be ridden on between flats, ie if you change the tube and it goes down again, then were not going to award yah for bad changing, in fact you loose 1/2 a point.
Mike has to decide if the dud tube is bad changing....

The dud tube had a 3mm long split just near the valve weld. Even I would struggle to somehow create that during a tube change!
But I will accept the judges' decision without further argument.

Simon, wack on your detective hat. At the end of the year when you beat Glenno, you want to know that it was a fair fight.

Is it a faulty manufactured product? if so no 1/2 point deducted.

or was it caused by not holding the valve stem still while pumping. If so then 1/2 point deducted for dodgy technique

or was it caused by the quality of the rim tape around the stem? If so then 1/2 point deducted for lack of due care.

Now hold up your right hand and say "no drugs were used when changing this tube" The flat tyre competition is a clean competition, except for the crap you get on your arms, legs, wherever when ya changing it.

Rim tape is impeccable. Not a single loose thread. I'd invite inspections but then I would be messing around with tyres again and I'm over that right now.
Did I hold the valve stem still? Not consciously.
Was the product faulty? Well the last one out of the packet punctured after about 15kms.
Was I on drugs? No. Banana and Weet Bix for breakfast, all gels unopened after just 6km on the road so not even a skerrick of caffeine in the bloodstream.

That's my last word on the matter - Just have your way with me and be done with it!

LOL Simon, so is your verdict that it was a faulty tube, ie no not your fault? If so, then you don't loose 1/2 a point.

BTW, did you ride between flats? if not, you can't claim a additional point, but if you did then ya get your point

Have a good one :)

Another flat! In fact a few, but at least they weren't all mine. Riding from Lithgow to Mudgee with Lindsay on Friday we sustained one each - his far more spectacular than mine, with his tyre hissing for attention as we were stopped, busy fixing the loose bidon cage on my bike. When I got my flat I let Lindsay play the gentleman and fix it for me, so that's 2 points for him and 1 for me (just for being a girl, right Mike!).

I wonder just how many points Lindsay really has though.

Then on the Saturday ride Ted got a flat and I changed that for him. Does he goes to minus one for being a boy and not changing his own flat? Indeed perhaps he should go to minus 3: not changing his own flat, letting a girl change it, and boasting before the race that he's never had a flat on his new bike (thus bringing down the wrath of the muffin man).

I bought some new tyres.

I got a flat tyre at Bream Beach.

How aout having a broken spoke competition.

Jessica is winning with three broken spokes in two days of riding.

She broke a spoke a few weeks ago on her way back from Waterfall and she broke two spokes at Jervis Bay.

Thanks for pointing this out Bill, I've been wondering about this...

Maybe there could be a spoke bit in this competition? And if so, where would the points stand? So breaking a spoke in Sutherland and riding home with the wheel rubbing on the break pad, plus, trueing own wheel! (which would have to result in bonus points) Only to have 2 more spokes break in Jervis Bay!!! Also this would mean that Geoff M would have to have points also for loaning a spare wheel! Absolutely legendary weekend.

I thought that I had finished my patching last night, but while I was folding up one of my patched tubes (the one that I pinch flatted on my ride to Wollongong on Easter Sunday), I found two more holes.

Another Pinch Flat.

How's that for effort? A Double Pinch Flat (4 holes) in a single tube, no wonder it went down so fast.

Perhaps it was holding up with the pinch flat, by the tube sealing against the tyre ???

A flat on the road bike this morning, it was only a slow leak, so I only found it when I left the cafe this morning. I rode home and at first doubted if it was a real flat. I pumped it up and it has gone down during the day.

I was having a look at my other tube to be patched. The one with the double pinch flat. Well, I had a close look at it, so I may have missed some even now. There are a few spots on the tube where you can see that it was stressed, but it didn't seem to hole.

I ended up finding 2 holes, and a total of 13 pinches (including the 1 I had already fixed)

I think that I got 1 when I first hit the crap road, and the rest came about riding the tyre on the rim. Even so, that is a pretty impressive haul. If I'm no good at patching, it is going to be good practice to get that tube going again.

I just looked back and my last flat was 19th march, so it is 7 weeks since my last flat. The average is improving.

But I guess the Km's count is lower because of the Mont and Dirtworks taking up a fair bit of my time offroad.
