I have entered this years gong ride (Sun Nov 7th) and created a team for DHBC. It would be great if we got to the level of 2008 where we were the top fund raising bicycle club with $6000+ raised.

So get in there and register now for a great cause, give a donation and get your friends, work colleagues and family to sponsor you.

Here's the link to sign up and remember to join up to the Dulwich Hill Bicycle Club team as well by selecting to join a team as you register.

I'll be looking at a 6:00am sharp start from St Peters to avoid the crowds.

I'm in and hoping to do the return leg again.

Last year, 3 of us dawdled our way back to the inner west, stopping for caffeine breaks along the way. I recall we got back around 3pm.

The round trip qualifies it as a century ride!

Update: We now have 9 team members and have raised $470 which is not too bad as we are still 9 weeks away from the ride.

If you're planning on riding, sign up soon and help to push team DHBC up the sponsorship ladder - we're 217th at the moment!

I got an email from them saying something about coloured bibs and start times. Where did I nominate a start time does anyone know? How would I know what that start time is? I want to leave early too, so those pesky kiddies aren't in the way.

When you register, you nominate a ride time e.g. < 3 hours, 3-4 hours etc. Based on that they give you a start time with fastest riders starting first. Jo has received her pack and she's got a 06:00am start time as she nominated the fastest ride time (I really can't remember the times they gave but I nominated the fastest one too, based on the allocated start time I wanted!)

Normally we ignore allocated start times and start at 06:00 anyway but it seems this year they are moving the first "official" start time back to cope with numbers. We'll all meet in the car park on Princess Hwy opposite May St and then head off keeping in mind that it's really hard for more than 2-3 riders to try to stick together for any length of time.

I have no recollection at all of nominating a ride time! Was clearly multi-tasking at the time I was doing the entry. Oops. We will see what turns up I guess.

so wait...you have to raise $250, or you're not allowed to ride?

No that's not how it works. That is the suggested amount for you to raise. You can ride without raising a cent or even donating anything yourself beyond the entry fee although surely your mum can throw in $10 !

Great initiative Stuart.

I will be joining the gong ride team.

It is important to raise the $250. It only takes 10 friends at $25 each to meet that target.
I personally have a close family member suffering from MS. The symptoms alone are hard to comprehend.

At the moment the club has 12 participants if each member meets the $250 target that’s a total of $3000 for MS. The event is limited to 10,000 riders and at $250 per person that is well below the target.

So I wish you all the best with your fundraising and I believe we can smash the current $2000 target. See you on the day. :D

Update from MS Australia 23/09/2010:
We currently have 7,524 registered riders. Once we reach the 10,000 mark there will be strictly no more entries for this year's ride. It won't be long before registrations close.

So, if you've been thinking about riding this year but thought it's ages away, think again. Sign up today, bolster team DHBC and get to fund-raising.

Here's how many riders we had in 2008!

I have just entered. I hope to gain some fitness in a very short period of time and not humiliate myself. It really hurt me to observe, on today's attempted Waterfall ride, some "smarty pants" type club members riding so much faster than me...at least it has motivated me! Be warned Troutman... I is back!!

We can all just leave at the same time and ignore the allocated start time. I also suggest that we don't actually attempt to ride through the real start "gates". We'll just meet in the carpark and then ride out on to Princess Hwy.

Wed 13/10/10 Update:
Team Goal: $2,000
Amount Raised: $2,761

Yeah go team and congrats to Nathan Crowley who is a clear leader at this stage with Simon S catching up quick - lets see if we can get to $4000. If you haven't registered and started fund raising get into it - it's four weekends away!

Friday 22nd Oct Update:
Team Goal: $4,000 (I raised it)
Amount Raised: $3,196.00

Nathan is still out in front (on $956) of 18 registered riders which does not seem to include you Mr Hales or Wazza - come on lads !

Also great to see our junior track coach, mentor and all round great DHBCer Michelle getting Hugo on board for a family team.

So people, what are you doing on Sun 7th Nov? Get on board and get to raising some $$ for MS and have a fun ride as well.

BTW, there are plans by some riders to ride back as well ... I'm planning on riding back on the train but I may be convinced to ride back on the bike if there are enough incentives. Who's up for the ride back???

Hi Adventurers,

Due to work commitments, I can't do the Gong this year, unfortunately.

I notice that entries are closed now.

Would anyone like my bib?

Let me know.

Sat 6thNov Update:
Team Goal: $4,000
Amount Raised: $8,046

63rd overall top fund raising team and first bicycle club (that I can see anyway).

Fantastic work team DHBC!! Smashed our target and have overtaken our total from 2008 when we had twice as many riders. Great effort.

Here's the top 5.

1st Nathan Crowley $1,366
2nd Douglas Kirkham $1,030
3rd Liam & Seamus $895
4th Justin Buckland $805
5th Simon Sharwood $665

So, we'll be meeting in the Sydney Park car park entrance (opposite May St) on the Princes Hwy at 5:50am to get a photo for a 6:00am sharp start - if you're late, we'll be gone!

Also, if you haven't ridden the 'gong ride before it's very difficult for large bunches to stick together - most likely it will break up into smaller bunches of 3-5 riders who are around the same ability. At the finish we'll try to meet up (over on the left after you come through the finish line ) but once again this isn't always possible and some people may wish to go back straight away - certainly the trains get very packed the later you stay. Remember to bring some $$ for the train - its $10 and to buy a hamburger off of the scouts!

If you want my mobile number in case you want to call me just PM me.

See you all tomorrow morning, rain or shine!

Hey amazing clear weather and I was happy with my time - less than 3 hours and my road bike has now doubled the distance travelled this year. And first time meeting DHBC riders who ride on the road and not track.

Great day for a ride!

I started croakily with the DHBC team at 6am and soon got separated and rode with Nathan until the other side of Captain Cook when he decided to go off and chase everyone else and I couldn't be bothered. This turned out to be a good thing as my voice was getting severely challenged so I rode by myself up to Waterfall and then down into RNP.

No motorcycle escort! but that meant that some annoying chap sat off to the right of my back wheel and I had no idea what he was going to do on the right handers. The park was cool, damp and misty - although I realised at some point that part of the mist was me breathing on my glasses. With visibility compromised, a few idiots and a wet road it seemed sensible to take it slowly. My watch said I was doing 40 something down there. I passed Mark on the hill, fixing a flat but going to fast to yell out.

I rode with a couple of guys who were leapfrogging me and then having to wait for their mate who was struggling. I told them to feed him! They weren't very sympathetic. At Stanwell Tops I caught up with a bunch of DHBC people including Jess. We immediately attacked her hated hill and did it easily. On the descent into Stanwell Park we didn't see Colin who was on the side of the road fixing a flat. Trundling along through Thirroul or somewhere Jess met her bogan of choice if Simon decides to run away.

Gents, please don't model yourselves on the hirsute chap we saw riding in front of us somewhere along that coast road. Our advice is that it is best to pull your knicks up higher or invest in some wax. Too much information for us. :)

Coming through the finish line was a challenge! The wet bog method of slowing cycles was so effective it was hard to make it over the finish line. However, that out of the way, we easily found the DHBC crew standing out in red and set about organising breakfast.

Jess, me, Colin and Mark set off to find Towradgi and a cafe at the beach that came recommended from the Century Fixie ride. A slight detour saw us in a cul-de-sac that saw not one, but two locals rush out to give us directions (and some gratuitous advice) because they rightfully ascertained that we were "lost". As an aside, in that cul-de-sac we saw the world's biggest cat - the size of a small dog. Later, we saw an enormous dog, the size of a small pony.

Michelle and Andre joined us at the cafe and a good breakfast was had by all and for a very reasonable price! I had bread and butter pudding which had all the breakfast ingredients in it, just presented in a different form. I pretty much lost my voice at this stage - it kept coming back in fits and starts for the rest of the day.
Image
M&A left to drive back and the rest of us rode to Towradgi station to catch the next train to Waterfall. The chap in the ticket offfice was really friendly and helpful but didn't sell tickets on Sundays and told us the wrong time for the train (out by about 45 minutes!) and it turned up just as we had bought our tickets so we ran in our silly shoes down a slippery slope to jump on the mostly empty train. Mark decided not to keep going and to get off at Waterfall with us.

At Waterfall, Colin emerged from the men's with tales of various men in various states of undress (struggling out of their bibs no doubt). Nothing like that in the ladies - well not that I saw anyway. Apart from a bike falling over in front of me outside a cafe at Waterfall, we had an uneventful ride back to Sutherland. The bloke who owned the bike thought I knocked it over, but honestly sir - it just fell over by its own. I thought I was clever in staying upright and not running over his computer which jumped off the bike in a bid for freedom.

At Sutherland we saw Miguel who had tackled the ride up to Waterfall and hadn't taken our option. The usual servo is an IGA and they had free slushies so every teenager in Sutherland had turned up it appeared. We knew what was going on because Simon had smsed Jess to tell her! None of us partook of the free slushie though. Opportunity lost.

So we were 5 going back home and we picked up two blokes training for the Taupo ride in NZ. They were very grateful for a tow, especially along the Grand Parade into a headwind. I sat on the front, with Mark, exercising my legs and providing very little draft benefit for Miguel who had done all the hard work riding up through RNP. Finally got back home about 1.30pm having had a great day, no rain and 2 good rides.

Good effort team DHBC and especially to all those who did a sterling effort in fundraising. And thanks Stuart for organising.

great ride , excellent weather and very nice report Eleri. Sounds like breakfast was great fun and I'm glad the Michelle & Andre found you after somewhat of a f-up with directions and who was going where.

A big thank you to all who raised money - any amount helps and DHBC did very, very well this year. On a personal note I did the ride in my record time of 3:05 mins so pretty happy with that and I still like descending, even in the wet. I'm sure I was one of those "crazy guys" going down the wrong side of the road and overtaking 'cause when you can't climb you've gotta make time on the descents.

Here's the team at the start, minus the juniors and Simon S .....

I went to the wrong carpark - didn't read the thread closely enough  and my Dad came from the East and preferred the other one.
We queued at the start - he wanted to do the full palaver.
I did a 3:20, inc waiting at Otford to make sure the old man was okay/alive and to get the money shot for posterity.
FWIW, he did a 3:45 - pretty good going for a 70 yo. I guess that's where all the cycling talent in the family went ...
Saw Miguel, and the Jess/Eleri bunch on the way back, then passed Miguel (got a lift home) a couple of Kms before Heathcote. He looked strong and stoical, if you know what I mean.
Next year I'll get the right carpark.

Could have been you (except you were ahead of me) - it had that distinctive Campag freewheel noise. Would have been alright if he overtook but he just kept surging, coming up on my RHS and then ... didn't do anything and cramped my style. I think he wimped out actually.

Personally, I don't get that sort of an attitude, and I hope that it was in jest. I like descending, and I can descend quite quickly, but I have built that up over a few years of practice and I know most of the descents in the area well enough to know how hard I can push the bike around the corners.

I always say to people that I would prefer you to finish the descent last, than not finish at all. Also, I have had people descend quicker than me, who have taken maybe 10-15 seconds out of me. When you are doing 50-60km/hr 10-15 seconds is a reasonable sort of distance, but I have then taken a couple of minutes out of them on the climb. So was there any value in risking life and limb taking the corners at a stupid speed especially considering that there was a probably a reasonable amount of wet leaf litter on the Waterfall descent to gain a few seconds on someone?

It was half in jest, referring to Eleri's comments about idiots like the guy hanging on her back wheel  I overtook a couple of small bunches on the straights heading for the corners as I tended to brake much later than them (30 years of riding a motorbike in all weather conditions does wonders for your braking and cornering) but I was always alone going around the corners - no trying to slip up the inside or anything like in a race. As for being caught on the hills it's inevitable 'cause I can't climb at all but it does help to keep me in contact with my bunch for a while longer and no harm done.

Sounds promising. As a young man we used to have races (in cars, in neutral) down Black Mountain in Canberra to see who would hit their brakes first. Somewhere like this would be great for the event. A long downhill with some excellent corners + little traffic and no other entry points....

Black Mountain? A good spot to practice your Downhill? You're kidding right. The hill isn't too bad, it's the full stop sign at the bottom that terrifies me.

Personally, I think that the idea isn't a good one. People would be going faster than normal because it is competitive, and someone will come a cropper. Not pretty at the sort of speeds they would be hitting.

Fwiw, I've been wondering to myself about a hillclimb event for the club

+1

Would our club/CA insurance cover for such an event? I'd also classify it as an "extreme sport", and will sure be a job or two for the waiting ambo. Thinking of the major accidents/deaths in TdF, what were the circumstances again?

We could get some of the juniors to stand at the bottom and hold up a couple of mattresses, just in case.

If anyone has hi-res shots of the club on the day, the Cooks River Valley Times wants to run a story about us.
PM me and I'll let you know how to send the images its way.
