I'm in the market for a new HRM. I haven't seen my last one for several months now, so I'm giving it up as lost. Curious what devices people have used and liked. I think it would be nice to be able to download data for analysis, but it's not a deal breaker. Also, my last HRM only provided energy information in calories, not kJ. This was really annoying, so I don't want to get a device that doesn't allow me to get information in meaningful units.

Let's hear your recommendations...

+1 for the Garmin Edge 500.

I use sports track to log all my training. It gives you a good indication of just how fatigued you are and that you really should take a day off.

I've got 2 Garmins - with different hrm. The Edge 800 has the best, most comfortable one but I think they are interchangeable anyway.

The data comes as calories not KJs but in any case, the underlying formula produces rubbish so it doesn't matter what the unit of measurement is, it's wrong.

0.0
i bought one for 80 bucks that tells me just my heart rate. I use it to tell john to slow down, and to make my self go harder on the rollers. I dont know if it does any thing else, do you need to know any thing else?

Heart rate monitors calculate energy burn based on a series of assumptions and calculate it against your settings and the heart rate. The actual figure is highly inaccurate, however, when using the same heart rate monitor the different values on different days display increase or decrease in effort. BUT not for short interval activities of less than 4 minutes per interval, due to heart rate latency.

If your primary reason for using a heart rate monitor is to measure burn, I suggest you do some research on how the monitors calculate the energy burn and select one that calculates it the way you want it calculated

From memory 1 calorie is 4.2Kj. Though as has been mentioned the calculated amounts by HRM arevery inaccurate, so you really need a Power Meter.

+1 from Garmin 500, although I would be tempted to get an 800 now but it would depend on your budget.

I have had problem after problem with the lower end Polar HRM's, so don't even bother. I've been through a CS100 and a CS200. I know people using the higher end ones (like CS600) and they have lasted for years, however.

You can download your data from the Garmin 500 into Garmin Connect and get a nice graph of the route and all that crap. Not really something you are going to study but nice to send on to someone and go "this is a cool ride, go and do it! here's the map" kinda thing.

The fact that it tracks by GPS is awesome, because it means when you have multiple bikes (and I am pretty sure you do...) you don't need a sensor on all of them. In fact, IMO you only really need a sensor on bikes you are more likely to use on rollers/trainer or on a mountain bike because GPS does not track well through switch backs etc.

A lot of the gym equipment has Polar electronics and is designed to work with Polar heart rate monitors.
