I'm keen to be part of a team to compete in the Mont 24 but it's already sold out.

If we have a team and a spot opens up, please keep me in mind.

Alternatively, if anyone knows of another team looking to fill an open spot then please pass on my details.

Thanks,
Al

Jo (the builder) and I and 2 non-DHBC friends are in a team. No open spots at the moment...

If any females also missed out, it looks like Silent Revolution may have a few spots open.

Lizanne, I saw something in a Mont newsletter that anyone there on time who pays $5 can enter. So, if you're still support crew/moral support for our team and can get to Canberra that early...

I have a partial tear in my left rotator cuff and I think I am probably going to be wise to stay off the single track so I don't cause anymore damage :(

As such... If there are any females who are keen to join a team of single speeders looking to podium, let me know :/

If someone was able to do it and a short ass, they could use my bike. Not sure how keen my team would be with someone who hasn't been on a mountain bike yet, will ask them!

I reckon you would go alright on these tracks anyway, there really isn't anything overly technical! Even smoother than the Scott... I think entry was somewhere ~$175 including camping fees and day license (which I assume you would need). Do you have the dosh? :) What size shoe are you? In case I have some you can borrow...

i wear size 36 shimano (anywhere between a 4 and 6 depending on the brand)

do i need a day licence if i have a cycling aus race licence?

Teah mtba and CA are different

The guys are keen - but i want a little bit more time to think about it. I really, really want to race... Anyone know anything about rotator cuff tears? I raced a couple of weeks ago and just took lots of pain killers. Is that bad? :(

i tore mine a few years ago, and was told to keep off the bike. and this is when i was swimming and not cycling. my physio said flat bars were better than drops, but pulling up on the bars is bad.

get a physio band and do a few excercises. and rest(like nothing) for a week atleast (and when i say nothing i mean normal person, couch potato version of nothing). see a physio, and get an educated response

and i'll see you @ the mont!

Hmmmm when do I need to make a decision by?

Do you know anyone with a camping oven? Only way I could feel better about not racing is to bake cookies and cakes on site. That would be way rad!!

Well you can do nothing and hopefully get better, and be able to race the mont. or you can risk riding, agrivate the injury, and then watch me try not to wrap your bike around a tree... I know which one would be more fun to witness

Well I am out, need to rest this shoulder and figure out WTF to do so I can have it 100% for Whistler in July! Yikes.

Lizanne the boys found a replacement over the weekend, another team of friends lost a singlespeed rider to injury and they found a replacement but he would only race if his girl found a team to race in too... So it was kind of like a two for one deal. Are you bringing a bike? I might take my SS and cruise around some fire trails in the area to stop myself from going INSANE.

Well jealous. The DH in Whis is so much fun, wish i could go back and ride it all this summer again.

They are opening the trails of peak chair this year so make sure you check them out. Suppose to be like 2 hours of single track to get to the bottom.
Let me know when you are going and i will let the Lifties know to watch out for you.

Also have a look at the Joyride tracks, they come out under the Chair about 3/4s they way up.

Yeah I saw the announcement about Top of the World when it came out, it's going to be so rad! But to me, ALL the tracks will be new so I am going to be pretty stoked on it all.

I am there from the 5th July for three weeks. Direct flight to Vancouver, direct flight out, nothing but downhilling and recovering with beer drinking for 21 days! Hoping to come back with some rad skills, but am well aware they might not translate so well to our not-so-amazingly built runs like Thredbo. Was planning on doing heaps of DH in the lead up, but with my shoulder I have been forced to stay on the road for a while :( I guess the fitness will help to get fit more hours of riding into each day though!

Nice work Gentlemen! Congratulations...

Alex, is that a Dr. Chubb diagnosis? Or a real Dr. diagnosis? But is it really as impressive as my bruises though? ;-)

And thanks to Lizanne (and Alex) for being support crew for the night. Even if it was coupled with emotional blackmail to get us out riding in the middle of the night..

I think our team ended up in 25th position out of 50 teams which is not a bad effort! Go us. 8)

I guess someone should put up a race report, here is my account.

Alex, Glenn and myself arrived in sunny Canberra on Friday about midday, it may have been sunny but we feared our gazebo would end up in a different state due to the wind, we saw a few good examples of gazebo carnage. We headed out for a exploratory lap of the course, this is when things started to go wrong. Alex managed to break a chain, an inside plate had cracked and chain wouldn't stay on, it was a walk back to camp for him. Glenn and myself continued on out merry way. Later that night Alex and Glenn competed in the roller derby, Glenn winning his heat but not with a blazing time and Alex loosing his, but his time put him in third place at the point he decided to leave for the ill-fated ride back to camp. One crash in the mud later, concussed and slightly broken Alex shows back up at camp, not really recalling what had happened. It turns out he was out for the race, I believe the work 'useless' was thrown around quite a bit.

Race day, after a very cold night of not nearly enough sleep, John being our designated runner has the honour of the first lap (parking lot), he misses where we are holding his bike and runs right past us, I didn't even see him. The flag we were using as a marker was not our own, and they had decided to move. Even with that it probably only cost us 5 minutes. Next was Glenn then myself taking lap turns until around midnight when the super fun (read painful) double laps occur. The course was very good, not all that much climbing and only really one part that was hard on a single speed, again, who's idea was it to ride single speed? The whole SS thing was better then I thought it would be, for one its quieter, less chain slap and you don't need to think about changing gear, because as much as you try to find the lever, its just not there. It was sooooo cold at night, got down to about 4 degrees, having to get up at 4.30am, put on a damp thermal, arm warmers and gloves and stepping out into the cold is far from fun. Its a goods thing it only takes about 5km to warm up.

During the race we suffered two flats, one for John and one for myself, I managed to go over the bars once by mistiming a small flick to get around something. I rode 7 laps, John was meant to ride 8 but his back was hurting allegedly so Glenn got to do another double lap. We finished on 23 laps which put us in 2nd place, not bad for a three man team in a four man category. First place had a lap on us and third was 30 minutes behind on the same number of laps as us.

There were lots of "I'm never doing this again" and "Why are we doing this" comments coming from me, but this is normal. I may be done with 24hr events.

Many thanks to Lizanne who cooked for us and supplied some support and I guess Alex supplied some moral support and did manage to lube a few chains.

Really fun weekend - a nice track for the more cowardly riders like me - lots of places for passing, designed so dangerous speeds couldn't be reached and soft dirt to land on for my crash (though Jo wasn't as lucky...). Lizanne and Alex were great moral support at 1 o'clock in the morning and Lizanne, with 2 working shoulders, was also great practical support. Lizanne also got a second place - in the track stand comp. She seemed to have won it, but a decision was made (not clear why) to re-run it. The commentator was quite surprised to see a fixie in the middle of the paddock. It's a nice event - relatively easy track and relaxed atmosphere.

In case anyone is interested below is my Bernard riders report.

The Mont 24 was this year attacked from a different angle when a team of Bernard’s road and track riders competed in the hotly contested single speed category. Taking place in Kowen Forest in Canberra, the 18km course is a mix of flowing single trail interspersed with short blast (normally uphill) on fire trail. The team consisted of Glenn King (Bernard), John Nguyen (Bernard), Christian Lees (DHBC) and myself.

Whilst the rain stayed away, we were greeted with high winds and icy cold nights, the perfect combination for high cadence mountain biking. The weekend started off badly after I crashed the day before the race, injuring my left shoulder badly and effectively eliminating myself from the race. My team mates decided to continue the race regardless, this mean they were on the back foot from the beginning, having only three riders.

The Mont features a Le Mans style running start, designed to spread the 600 odd riders out slightly before the single track commences. John was elected as our runner, a choice that he later regretted as he was running on gravel in his brand new Specialized Carbon MTB shoes. Unfortunately in the pandemonium of the start he ran past his bike holder and was forced to double back to retrieve it. This placed us further back in the field and dramatically slowed our first lap, costed us approximately 5 minutes and by the three hour point we were in second place, 8 or so minutes down on first place.
For the first six hours of the race, our lap times were similar if not faster than the first place team and for a brief period we were even leading the category. Mean while Glenn King was giving the pros in six man teams on geared bikes something to think about, whipping out 53 minute laps. Sadly three punctures in short succession, cost us fifteen minutes and as we ended the night leg we were in second place.

As the night wore onwards, the added fatigue of only having three riders began to take its toll on the boys. The shorter rest periods compounded with me consuming all their food in frustration at not being able to ride meant that there were some tired faces around the camp. A mistake with one of our transitions resulted in the third place team briefly sneaking into second place. An irritated Glenn chased them down and greeted the other rider, asking “how his race was going?” “Really good mate, we just moved into second place I think”, was the reply. Glenn then politely asked if he could get past, the other riders obliged unaware of who was behind him. “Thanks mate, your now back in second”, said a grinning Glenn as he speed off up the track.
The positions on the leader board remained the same from that point onwards. John did his final lap, mumbling something about ‘bloody hardtails’ and ‘sore backs’, he’s since been sighted staring longingly at an S-works dually. Christian reluctantly completed his last lap before sending Glenn out to complete the final two laps of the race. A shattered Glenn was greeted by the team and presented two pieces of pizza and a cold Bernard Dark beer to wash away the dust, as he crossed the finish line.

Bernard riders finished 2nd overall in the single speed category, which is a seriously good result considering the circumstances. Whilst there were some comments along the line of ‘never doing a 24 again’, I’m certain that when the next one rolls around we will be back, with our eye on the single speed win. On a personal level I’d like to say just how proud I am of the guys for the effort they put in, I really wanted to be out there on the bike helping.
