Just entered B2B again. It was my first 100 mile ride last year so I'm looking forward to having another crack at it.

Any one else?

What's the date? I could be up for this. I've always meant to do it, just never have.

I'm very lucky, my wife loves an excuse to get out of town for a weekend.

Sounds good but can someone confirm, is it a race? Do you have to ride 162km like it is a race?

It's a timed event but it's not a race, so ride it how you like. There are shorter routes as well.

Did you note the word 'extreme' in the title of the 162k version Jo? Ordinary folk (me anyway) plan to do the regular 110 k. (My friend on the other hand ....) Don't ask Christian whether its a race - but I'd say it's worth giving it a fair effort.

What is the definition of 'extreme' in this case...? Anyone got any Strava data? I'm guessing Eleri will do 162? ;-)

I'm definitely doing the 162. It's extreme because they said it is. It's sort of mostly flattish except for a big hill at the end that we didn't do last year because of a crash and we all got diverted around it.

Eleri, after doing hill repeats on Mount Buffalo "Extreme" must take on a whole new meaning.

I did the most of the last hill before i got turned back. The "hill" is the pointy bit at 110km. As you can see it's not really
very "extreme" even by our mere mortal standards.

Definately out for this year due to the date. It is my wife's birthday (I just realised). Not a chance of hitting B2B this year. Sizing up my alternatives.

Perhaps the Orica Kermese?

I'd love to know how far and how steep.
Cheers.

Looking to enter the extreme

Did people use the bus transfer to the start before? How was it?

The event info says to turn hanlebars and remove pedals prior to loading in the truck.

Do they supply allen keys to re-attach pedals and torque wrenches to re-tighten stems on carbon steerers?

If not - I suppose I could always pick up a ritchey torque key. Not keen on riding with a stonking great allen key tho.

I could always ride to the start and make it a ~200 km day.....

I did it in 2011 and used the transport option. My memory was that it was well organised and care was taken with the bikes. I recall the 40K bus ride from Bathurst to Blaney were rolling hills. it's not an additional 1hour and half of saddle time i would be engaging in if i had a choice. The weather was seriously unpleasant that year. i would think in the dry it would have been nice. here are some ride reports.

Extreme course cancelled. Still holding the long course though. This year they are doing rolling closures. Interesting move!

Big shame, I was looking forward to doing the full course this year, after the accident closure last year.

While the organizers have decided the merge point between the long and extreme to be dangerous and I can see how it could be. Personally I liked it, gave me a fresh batch of riders to draft. ;)

I am VERY disappointed by this decision. I would have thought Rockley Mountain was a bigger risk than the merge point. Surely there must be a way to mitigate that.

Yeh I would of thought that Rockley Mountain was a bigger risk.

Last year I was injured (Tboned a car 6 days prior) and switched from Extreme to the back of 70k to ride with a beginner. I didn't see any merge issues at all, true I was at the back of the 70k. However I did the 110 a couple of years earlier and was well forward in that group. Sure we were overtaking 70k riders on the way back, but I don't see the issue.

Anyway separating the groups is just about increasing the difference it start times

Bump - Entries close this Sunday 7 April.

First time doing this ride or a ride that doesn't have the same Start/End point.
I have same concerns about removing and reattaching handlebar and pedals as mentioned by AndrewM with the Bus service- does anyone has definitive lowdown on that process ?

Another option is driving the car there are begging wife to drive back to Bathurst via Mid Western Highway... anticipating that could be a lot tougher then shelling out for 2 bikes.

The definitive low down is.......uncertain. They don’t expect to have to remove pedals and turn bars - they never have before. But if they do - we have been warned....

If they do - it will be chaos.

Very disappointing.
Hi Andrew,

I have been forwarded your query regarding packing bikes on the bus. At the end of the day its up to the rider to make own necessary arrangements to ensure there own bike is packed tightly and secure to ensure no damage is made to own or others equipment. Most riders carry a spanner or allen keys to assist with this but if riders wish to bring along tool kits to assemble bikes and have no wear to put there equipment when riding, riders can always leave bags and tools with the Cycling NSW Van (Big white transit van) which will be at the start line of the event and will be driven to the finish line in time for the first rider to cross the line.

If you have any other inquiry's please let me know.

This non answer got my goat. But I swallowed my goat. Call it a professional skill.
John,

Thanks for the response. I would like go be clear.

Must pedals be removed and handlebars turned prior to bikes going on bus? This is what it says on the website.

Gary told me they have not asked for this in the last eight years.

I don't know many cyclists that routinely ride with a pedal spanner and torque wrench. (You would want a torque wrench to tighten a stem on a carbon steerer).

Cheers

Andrew
Hi Andrew,

It is more of a precaution then anything, from my understanding bikes are loaded in fully assembled (to limit as much disruption as possible), its mentioned on the website just encase room is a little tight when packing the bikes and to alert riders so they can make appropriate measures. As Garry mentioned there has been very few cases where this was an issue over the last 8 years. At the end of the day if you are stuck and need some assistance the Cycling NSW Van should have appropriate equipment / tools to assist any riders who needs help.

Hope you have a good weekend.

It is definitively bureaucratic butt covering. I get the strong feeling John Davis does not undertsand his members/customers. For some reason I expected better of Cycling NSW.

FWIW - I am just going to turn up and expect my bike to be safely transported by bus with no pedal removal or bar turning. If there is any stuffing around - I go for a ride to Oberon or something. And never enter anything like B2B again.

Chances are it will be fine - just an over cautious bureaucrat .

Just a reminder, entries for the NSW Hill Climb Championships - Bathurst close this Sunday.
I see a few of the young guns are doing it, any more old timers up for it?
While sitting on the couch watching the rain I bit the bullet and entered. I feel I may regret my rashness.
All cycling decisions made while sitting on the couch should really have a legislated cooling off period.
I see James is also doing it which pretty much assures my position as slowest of the DHBC contenders. ;(

Not to worry Philip, I entered with the same bravado as any internet purchase - a click, momentary confusion, followed by that universal, heartfelt utterance, "whoops". I'll be heading to Bathurst next Sunday to drop off Taku, and will take the opportunity to do a recce of the hill. You're welcome to hitch a ride and scope it too, if you like, or you can just laugh at my attempt on Strava.

Tempting offer but I don't think I could manage a leave pass for a whole Sunday. I look forward to seeing the segment on strava though. I managed to find it on Garmin but not Strava. Every variation of the panorama circuit you can imagine but not the actual hill climb route.

I wonder how many of the great wars have been really started by a bloke sitting on a couch somewhere sipping a glass of wine thinking, 'Oh yeah, all right, I'm feeling good, I'm feeling strong... think I'll invade ______.'

Well his father hit 11 hole in ones the first time he ever played golf, so I think its fair to say that he will be the first person to break the 60 second mark...

Here's an update from CNSW due to record entries for B2B. http://nsw.cycling.org.au/site/cycling/ ... thurst.pdf

Good news, you have to go on the overbridge to get to the registration area on Saturday afternoon rather than across the crit track. This is a good safety initiative.

A bunch of us will be around on Saturday afternoon watching the crits. We haven't planned to watch he hill climbs sadly so will expect to get SMS updates if Kim Jong-Un actually turns up. That would have to be newsworthy and worth a change of plan.

Or just SMS me (my number is in every member email update).

Please pack warm cycling gear - in previous years participants have described this as the coldest, wettest ride they have ever done. Some have never recovered from the ride a couple of years ago.

Last year it was overcast, slightly damp and about 14 degrees from memory. Expect it to be cold.

I'm trying to figure out if the hill climbers will need to carry their bikes over the bridge for the start of the time trial. I'm thinking yes we will and make sure you take everything with you for the start!!!

It's looking like it will be a chilly start on Saturday and Sunday (3-16 on Sat; 0-19 on Sun), but not wet. Or semi-wet like last year.

I went for a ride in Bathurst last Sunday, and thought that was uncomfortably cold early on (base layer, arm warmers, gilet) – despite seeing a jogger wearing only a singlet, shorts, and a beanie.

It did warm up quickly when the sun got some traction, and I ended up mildly cooked going up Mt Panorama (see what I did there?). The relatively late start to the event should miss the really cold part of the day. Glad I'm not camping this year.

I also found some Kim Jong-un graffiti (no joke!). This has freaked Philip out, apparently. It says: "You have caught me at a strange time in my life."

Image

I'll be in Bathurst on Friday, mid-morning, as will a few others, picking up juniors from the road camp.

The Hill Climbs on Sat kick off at 8:30am, before the gun club gets shooting at 12pm (again, I am not joking). Sign on is at Harris Park, adjacent to Pit Straight - which shouldn't involve any stairs, if I have read CNSW's map properly... I'm probably wrong, though.

Zero means winter gloves, 19 means summer gloves, what do I do!!?

And 19 is going to be too hot for a winter jersey too.

As long as it doesn't rain or snow again I'm happy.

The Hill Climb start times are up.

I've got exactly 53 minutes to get up and off the hill before the shooting starts. It's what the country folk call "motivation".
