With the winter months now behind us, and some fabulous sportifs coming up, a few of us have been considering an appropriate practice ride.

This one's a beauty.

We'll ride across the Harbour Bridge; then up to Palm Beach via the Wakehurst Parkway. We'll pause for breakfast at The Boathouse Palm Beach (http://www.theboathousepb.com.au); then catch the 9am ferry across to the Central Coast. We'll ride out & back to Patonga (which includes a couple of tough climbs), and then make our way to Terrigal via Killcare, Bouddi National Park, Macmasters Beach and Avoca. From there, we'll swing back round to Woy Woy via Gosford; then climb up to Kariong. We'll ride back along the old Pacific Highway (including climbs at Mooney Mooney Creek and Brooklyn), and throw in a couple of gorges (Berowra + Galston) for good measure.

This is a full-day ride, but we'll aim to be home for dinner. With the clocks changing this weekend, daylight saving will work in our favour.

If you're concerned about the full distance and/or elevation gain, but still interested in participating, there are various options. For example:

- You could skip the steep pinch up Surf & Bynya Roads to Jonah's at Whale Beach and meet others at breakfast

- You could take a break at Ettalong or Umina while others ride out & back to Patonga

- You could ride straight up the Central Coast Highway from Gosford to Kariong, rather than the longer / more challenging loop from Gosford to Woy Woy and up Woy Woy Road

- You could skip the 2 gorges (Berowra + Galston) at the back end

- You could catch a train home from the Central Coast or along the Pacific Highway at any time; we're never too far from public transport

Further details as follows:

Ride: Central Coast via Palm Beach

Start: Corner of Wattle Street and Broadway (Ultimo) at 5:45am

Finish: Pyrmont bridge (western side) / home for dinner

Suitable for: Strong 28s / Middies. This will be a "no-drop" ride; no-one will be left behind. However, please refer to those who have expressed an interest in participating (see below) when considering your suitability to join

Route: https://www.strava.com/routes/3415059 (full ride)

Distance: +240km (full ride)

Elevation gain: +4,800m (full ride)

Notes: Please bring 2 x spare tubes, pump, water, snacks + money for food, beverages & ferry

List:

You know this means one hour less sleep?

Thank you but I'm not sure I'm a 'strong 28's/middies' just at the moment... But at least I'm back on the bike. :-)

Great that you're back on the bike :-)

Why don't you join to Palmy, have breakfast and then ride back? That can be at whatever speed/effort you want, as there's heaps of time before getting the 9am ferry

Good idea. I'll certainly think about it and might see if Christian will come along too.

Hi Neil, I may join you to palmy - would you be interested in West Head/Akuna on the way back?

I am tempted by the tip of the Insular Peninsular.
But I am also a sucker for a ferry ride.
Perhaps a ferry then a train home from Gosford.

I'm in for the non-harcore half version. Assuming I even get that far.

Will bail at Gosford Train, or earlier. Anthony, you can pull me along to Gosford.

Paul, thinking of joining to Palmy - I'm not a fast 28 though but given your message to Jo maybe that's ok. What do you think?

Hi Di,

Absolutely yes, please come along. You'll really enjoy the ride, and I can't think of too many better places for weekend brunch than The Boathouse at Palm Beach.

"Strong 28s" is just a guideline for the effort required for the full +200 km ride. We can ride at a nice, cruisey pace up to Palmy - at whatever pace you want really - because we've got heaps of time before getting the 9am ferry.

There'll be people who'll just ride up to Palmy, join for breakfast, and then ride back through somewhere up there. Others will catch the ferry across to the Central Coast, ride a bit more and get the train home. And others will try to do the whole loop. Whatever you choose to do, there should be someone to ride with.

Looking forward to seeing you there :-)

It's been a while since i've been able to make a ride, so I'm keen, although will also opt for the Palmy return option (and someone will have to guide me back!)

I saw 5:30 at the square mentioned above.. is this the plan? Seems like it might be tight to get to Wattle St by 5:45am

Hi Adam,

That's great

Recent experience suggests it takes ~15 min to get from the Marrickville post office square to the corner of Wattle & Broadway

We'll wait regardless. I know Cam is coming from the square at 5:30, and he's got my number if there's any delay / issues

Cheers
Paul

Thanks Paul.. I might actually head straight to meet you guys at Wattle/Broadway.. saves me a hill or two coming from Petersham!

But, don't wait for me if i'm late/not there.. I've still got a bit of jet lag in the system! :)
