I was disgusted with Kyle's low act about Magda. Now I've lost any respect for her and especially Julia Morris. Good News Week can get stuffed. Its no longer on my list of viewing.

If you are angry write to Good News Week, Channel 10 or as I have, Media Watch.

I wonder how Amy Gillett's or Ben Mikics' parents feel with their insensitive comments about 'taking out cyclists' by running them over, or opening the doors.

In Magda's defense, she has since apologised for her comments and has stated that she is going to take part in Ride to Work Day.

I am not trying to defend her comments, she was out of line. No one should ever tell people to physically injure someone else. However, all of the facts need to be pointed out before anyone flys off half cocked.

I'm wondering why Julia Morris gets off so lightly when it was actually her who started "Just drive and take them out!" in response to Magda saying "number plate and fine them!"

Like james I'm not defending her comments, but why does Julia Morris(one of the most unfunny comedians i've heard) get off scott free.

I think she has done what anyone in the public eye would do (except Kyle and Rex of course) - she's tried to reverse the damage. Its a reasonable outcome for public debate given how low this has gone. I agree with you there.

I won't however apologise for being outraged by anyone who laughs, promotes, and socialises the concept of killing cyclists by dooring them, and running them over. My feelings on this are after carefully considering the facts. Cyclists are humans. They are me, you, our fathers, our mothers, they are my 10 year old son, or cousins, our friends. They are us --- and they are the wider community.

I wonder how other cyclists feel about this. I do acknowledge others views may differ, and I respect those differences as well.

That was the most backhanded apology I've ever read - it basically says that all riders should only ever be on bike paths and should stay off roads. I've never watched this show as GNW was a only just show when it was on the ABC all of 10 years ago. McDermott is past his use by date and this show show be canned.

You can also complain direct to channel 10 here

and there's a forum on channel tens site

or download this form and fax it to channel Ten on 02 9650 1111
You'll need to copy / paste the entire URL as the bracket breaks the link

According to the ACMA guidelines, Channel 10 only has to respond to written complaints - email does not count.

See the second post on this page for the canned ACMA response-

Apology? Was there an apology? I must have missed it. I got this blurb from the Environment week web page I gather some people have been writing to them to get them to dump her. My comments are in brackets.

"I am so sorry that the skit on bikers has caused offence. There are so many safety issues surrounding cyclists. Motorists need to become much more aware of cyclists on the road. My belief is that responsible cycling is to use bike paths where possible and if it’s not possible, to be extra careful on the roads (Bike paths do not lead everywhere and are not available to all and are not allways safe for riders riding fast).

We all make mistakes and the point is that hopefully we learn from them. Clearly my joke has brought to light that there are frustrations amongst cyclists and motorists (Was it a joke? Could have fooled me!). Hopefully some good will come of this and it will help promote useful dialogue between the two groups where some of these frustrations can be worked through in a productive way (I wonder how?).

I am a bike rider from way back (I am sure you are!)and in fact have been planning to buy a new bike. As a gesture of solidarity I have offered to participate in Bicycle Victoria's sector of the National Ride to Work Day on 14th October. Apologies again. Magda. And, yes, I will be wearing lycra."

OK ....I don't usually write stuff on the forum so I have to feel really fired
up to do so. I missed the show when it was originally aired, heard about the Magda moment from friends whilst in Melbourne on hols (brrrrr) and then caught the re-run when back in Syd.
I was appalled to say the least. What stood out to me first was that she was being a "typical comedian" - always go for the cheap shot, the fastest laugh, degrade a sitting duck etc. I mean, that's her job .......of course a comedian will do that.....BUT.....the main thing that annoyed me was that she is such a "Melbourne personality" and EVERYONE seems to ride bikes in that city. They have bike lockers, bike lanes everywhere and (most ?) motorists down there don't seem to hate you for simply being a cyclist. It just seems more ingrained in the culture seeing it's a flat city and very Euro etc.
Anyway......I've kind of always respected Magda for being a fatty in the
thin world of TV....but not anymore !!!!! Grrrrr.
