A few of us are planning to go down to Geelong to see the World Championships in late September.

Any recommendations for camping in the area within a bike ride from Geelong? I dont know that area at all.

We'd be there but have to be practical re allocating those 4 precious weeks a year of holidays. I'll just have to settle for TV.

I'll be there camping on a mate's floor. His house is about two blocks from the course.

There's heaps of great camping and riding aroung Geelong. Just 20ks south you have towns like Torquay (close to the famous Bells Beach), Anglesea, Ocean Grove etc. etc. - heaps of alternative all on the coast. Can be windy and a little chilly that time of year. The Great Ocean Road is a fantastic ride - you may see some of the pro's training there. Heaps of holiday accommodation - in caravan parks, hotels and also national parks.

You can still get cheap flights into Avalon (the closest airport to Geelong) as well.

It was my old stomping ground, so when we get closer to the time we can arrange appropriate beer stops.

Due to the fact that we have left booking accommodation till way too late it looks like we will be camping, probably near Barwon Heads (cadels hometown) which is a easy ride to geelong. At the moment there are three going down.

The cost is 30 per night for a camping site so pretty cheap and across the road fom the pub. I am pretty broke at the moment after a big trip so cheap'n'cheerful is the only was I can afford to go.

If you are interested in joining the DHBC southern expedition let me know.

We are planning to drive down with the box trailer loaded with bikes and camping gear in time to see the Swiss beast in the ITT and leave either late Sunday or Monday morning after the mens road race.

Are there any DHBC riders representing Ireland this time!!!

I have booked a campsite at Queenscliff which is 31K east of Geelong. There are presently 4 of us going down in one car.

We are leaving on Wednesday 29 in time to see the mens ITT on the Thursday and staying until the mens road race on the Sunday. They still had plenty of camp sites available.

I rate Phillipe Gilbert, Kolobnev, Friere and O'Grady as contenders.

If anyone ends up down in Geelong we are all staying in the B4 Camping & Caravan park in Queenscliff. There is a rail trail from Queenscliff all the way to Geelong.

Weller - any recommendations for rides and more importantly oubs for afterwards?

Bookies favourites - Gilbert, Friere

Dark horses for the race - Kolobnev, Cancellera and if he is riding Vino

My local choice who will be highly motivated by carrying a grudge from being booted unfairly from the Vuelta - O'Grady

Cocky bastard who could actually win - Cavendish

from the Cycling Tips blog

***On a side note, I was asked to spread the message that the Ride The Worlds event where you can ride for 2hrs on the circuit during the morning of the men’s race has been reduced to $165 (down from $300). All the facilities (showers, bike storage, etc) are provided to make it easy for a memorable day of cycling.

Not sure if I can be bothered to pay $165 to ride what are essentially public roads.

We are leaving this afternoon for Geelong.

1 trailer, 2 cases wine, 3 bikes......what more could you ask for?

Any rides or pub recommendations in the area?

Arrived in Geeelong today less my luggae as Jet Star could notget it on the plan. Have to stop my self acting like a silly groupie and remember I am actually 52. On arriving in Geelong I saw two of the Italians out for a training ride and then later I saw the Polish and Serbian teams. The next 5 days should be great.

I watched the last hour of the women's road race. Talk about an exciting race with lots of teams' tactical plays falling in the gutter and no clear winner right until the end. Much better than the AFL Grand Final which I was also watching and then abandoned when the race got exciting. Looked like a tough course and I was impressed to see Jeannie Longo (a woman in my age group) up there in the high placings. Commentating was rubbish though.

It was indeed a very exciting race and I was holding out hope for Vos but it wasn't to be. The protest by the Swedish rider may alter the final result though.

Looks like there'll be some good sparks tomorrow!

Yeah really the Swedish girl got pushed into the barrier big time. The Aussie girls again failed to fire with our protected rider being dropped on the big climb on the last lap. She also missed the ITT places - seems CA might be a bit off in the selections.

Looks like the protest was rejected and the determination was that the barrier wasn't straight. Reminded me that Theo Bos crash in Turkey and the poor barrier setup there.

The rider who won looked eerily close to being male.

The only good thing about being sick this week is that I've been couch-ridden so caught just about every second of every race. Exciting stuff! I was particularly taken with Vos's hissy fit after coming 2nd for the 4th time running. You have to feel for her though: that Georgia girl (boy?) came from nowhere! After the excellent performance of our boys, I am uber pumped for today. You will be pleased to hear Jo, that even I am going for Cadel. Although I'd love to see Gerrans make something of it too.

Im pretty sure the girl that won the sprint is the one that was at the worlds we raced, and she won the scratch racecomfortably, then helped her friend from the italy team to win the points, by continually riding her to the front, she only got one warning too!!
(i just checked facebook, yeah its her, mr and simon had breakfast next to her once :P

Theres an irish guy in the break :D i wish i had some of those irish gloves :(

Looks to me from the pattern of the spokes like the sensor on the camera is a scanning sensor, it does not take the wole picture at once, just a line at at time. Hence the top of the image would be taken a fraction of a second before the bottom. (aren't the camera's going at 1000 frames per second? Probably in the order of 10,000ths of a second).

See this post from cycling news - this local lad wasn't too keen on the roads being closed off and decided to remove the barriers to attempt to drive down the closed roads.
