Johnny Warren Jamberoo Classic - 10 February 2013
After the Gong ride yesterday I thought, I wonder if registrations are open for the JWJC, and sure enough they are. Ride is on 10 February 2013 and early bird registrations are available until 15 December for $50. Registration is now online as opposed to print, scan and email for 2012.
DHBC had a large turnout in 2012 and it is a great ride. Link to the registration form below:

Thanks Todd,
This is a beautiful ride so I'm in. Thanks for the heads up on early bird entries.

I'm in too. I really enjoyed last year. I recall that it was hot, windy but mostly very scenic.
My only gripes were the lack of signage at times, the lack of tax deductible status for the entry fee, and the the bus and trailer to the station was a bit rough and ready with no ropes, straps or padding. My bike was a bit scratched but I wasn't bitter about it. I would suggest riding back from the pub to the station. You might need to leave a bit in the tank for that segment.
This time I might also meet my family at the pub this time and go on to the Jamberoo Recreation Park where you control the action. That makes it a win-win in the family relationships stakes. I think Colin did that last year too.

Leave A LOT left in the tank to get to the train station. That's what Jeremy and I did and it was easily the most difficult part of the day!!
Last year Mark L and I rode back to Wollongong and caught the train from there. It's flat, a bit longer than the other route but quite fast. We were averaging 40kph for a fair bit of it - only because Mark sat on the front and I sucked wheel. We were trying to beat the rain. We didn't and ended up drowned and cold. But we met up with everyone else on the train in any case so it wasn't any slower.
I'm in.
Has any one ever ridden home before?

Mark L and I contemplated it last year but in the end only got as far as Wollongong due to very heavy rain.
We were thinking we would ride as far as we felt like and probably would have ridden to Stanwell Park or somewhere and caught the train from there. Maybe Waterfall. Beer at the pub might have informed our bravado.

If anyone is feeling daft, me, Scott and a few mates are planning to try do the return journey (or at least a decent chunk of it( as well. Not 100% sure of the exact route we'll take
I'm thinking I'll give the return leg a crack too. Crazy, but there is always the train if it gets to hard.

I feel like I should say yes to the return leg. Maybe just to Wollongong and I'll catch the train from there...
I've registered and am looking forward to my first JWJC, especially since I pulled out due to illness last year.I'm in too. Registering as we speak.
This time I plan to take enough food and electrolyte to get me there without bonking and cramping!!
Last year was a horror!
I take it from the above quote that the ride is essentially self supported. Are there any rest stops with water available ?
Cheers

From my memories of last year, there's an official stop at Wollongong and that's about it. That said, there's plenty of service stations and the like along the length of the route.
Late getting round to registering - but done now. The ride (part) of the way back will depend on how I feel once there ...
I take it we're starting from Marrickville and riding down to Loftus to sign on to get the extra 25k in. Would that be a 6am start?

Riding back took on a whole new complexion - no trains south of Wollongong this weekend:

Re: the ride back. Any thoughts on the best route? One of my friends was advocating going up Mt Kiera @ Wollongong and getting on the old highway. That a good way? And what's the best way from Jamberoo to the 'gong

No bail out point always makes me nervous. Though it does say on the CityRail website that they are making additional stops at Sydenham.
I still think I'll pop on the train at Wollongong. Will be about 150km of riding...

Ride starts at 730. I agree with Adam a start time of 6 from Marrickville Rd Cafe? Let's start the ol' DHBC forum list for who will be at the cafe at 6am.

I'll be riding back as far as my legs will carry me. So the Gong at least, hopefully further, but I'm probably dreaming.

Here is the advice from the pub:
"City Rail will be conducting line maintenance on Sunday 10 February, and buses only are available from Kiama to Wollongong Train Stations. Therefore, two 22 seater buses (with trailers) have been arranged by the JWJC organisers to assist with rider transportion from Kevin Walsh Oval Jamberoo to Wollongong Train Station at 12.30pm and 1.45pm.You are encouraged to make your own transport arrangements from Jamberoo to Wollongong or Sydney to avoid any transportation problems."
I emailed Jaimie Warren at the pub asking him to provide more in the way of blankets and proper ropes for the trailer this year, but having said that I think I will be riding from Jamberoo to Wollongong - about 35kms. I might keep Philip company beyond Wollongong if my legs are up for it but I plan to go out there pretty hard. I've held off registering until now given the dodgy weather of late. You can register at Loftus on the day.

On the advice of Marc down the cafe post-LaPa ride, those mad enough to be mounting a full return mission are planning to do so via the same route as we go down. I think Marc, Philip, Scott and myself are giving this a bash, along with a couple of my desperado, non-DHBC, ride-an-assload-of-Km mates. Admittedly come Sunday I'll probably not make it out of the front bar of the Jamberoo, but it's Wednesday and I'm feeling limber.

Ill be settling for the return ride to Wollongong. I plan to ride to Jamberoo at pace an not leave much in reserve. For me it will be a matter of need to return to Wollongong for the train. If I feel fresh I'll make a late call to press on. Weather is looking questionable too....

If there's any luck we'll run down on the NorEaster, and come back on the Southerly Buster. If there's no luck we'll be busting our butts punching into 30 knots of southerly for the last 70ks south and get damn wet for out trouble. Time will tell.
BTW, I'll see everyone down at Loftus. Trying to keep the powder dry for the full return mission

Unsurprisingly Urban Dictionary may not be the best source on this one:

Pia and I will be coming on the ride. We'll get the train down to Sutherland. I need to get there early to register.
RE: return ride. I'm going to see how I'm felling but I'd be interested in riding back to Sutherland particularly if there's a good tail wind.

Up the front at Sea Cliff Bridge, in favourable conditions. I got my turn exactly when the southerly blasted us backwards around Shellharbour... timing...
Not quite Philip quality. (Did you post-produce that while you rode those lazy extra 100kms home?)
Processed on my phone at jamberoo. Love the iPhone. I'll be selling my studio cameras soon. Not quite Philip quality. (Did you post-produce that while you rode those lazy 100km home?)
PS. cool pic James, you're a brave man, shooting while bunch riding!
