Nov 2 - Sydney to 'Gong and an alternative Sunday ride

A question, or conversation starter, around this coming Sunday: given the Gong ride is on, will there be an alternative Sunday ride?
Usually the club does not ride Waterfall on the Gong Ride day and there are various other options proposed. I'm sure someone will organise an alternative ride somewhere. I might do an Eastern Hills loop the loop thing (Eastern Hills and reverse) or a drive / ride West Head / Akuna from Narrabeen or even starting at Forest Way in Frenchs Forest.
I'm up for A Westhead/Akuna adventure leaving the Cafe at 6am if anyone is keen?

I'd recommend a 5.30 start and down to Waterfall & then back through the RNP on a 'gong ride'day.
I did this ride last year and enjoyed closed left hand lanes for large parts of the journey south, and then the best part, which was the climb out from the bottom of waterfall toward the Garrie beach turn off with no traffic on the road at all due to a police road block at the top. In fact, the rest of the RNP, while open to traffic, was also very quite as the signs indicating road closures turned many drivers away. Unfortunately i cant do it this year as I'm heading away for the weekend.
my advice is based on my experience of last year, when a 6.00 am start was scheduled for the gong ride. you just need to check this year, then start 30 minutes earlier from Marrickville,
John

A few are keen to go North ( westhead/ akuna bay) on Sunday. Leaving the cafe at 6 am, I will start the thread, pace will be 28's, who else is up for a bit of northern exposure? Please note I will be stopping at Mosman on the way back through.

How far/ hard is it? I've been keen to explore north for a while, but have lacked the nuts to do it thus far... This weekend might well be it!

Hi Ben,
From memory it's somewhere between 100 and 120 km, depending on what we decide to do when we get to Westhead, someone have some strava details to share?

I haven't done this ride for a while.
Here is the Strava log: http://www.strava.com/activities/133902333
Last time it took nearly 7 hours, we got caught in absolutely torrential rain, we all left Liam in the toilets, at least three of us (including me) crashed on Kent Street, Paul broke his hip, we nearly froze as Liam got two flats ten kms from home.
Apart from that, it was an uneventful ride...

Anyone suggesting LaPa, Container terminal and any other agreed extensions with coffee at St Judes?

What pace are we planning for tomorrow? I've checked out a few of you on Strava, and I think I might get dropped like a hot potato within the first block.

Cameron is the ride organiser and he should probably answer but most of us can ride middies pace comfortably and all of us are experienced going up and down hills at a good pace.
I reckon this ride would be about equal to completing two Waterfall rides back to back.
Without wanting to discourage you if you think you would struggle then it might be better attempted with a slower bunch another time. If you bail out you really want to be in a bunch coming home on the highway.

I think Cameron said 28s speed in his initial post. Distance is about 120km.
I might join; on the fence right now (not literally).

What a beautiful morning for it. Thanks, everyone!
Seems like it was a popular route for DHBC yesterday. A familiar red jersey (though I didn't know the rider) greeted us at Church Point, Andrew Mattes spotted Andrew Harvey whizzing by minutes later, and Amy & Mark were about 45 minutes ahead of us heading up McCarrs too. "Spotted" fodder everywhere!

So it's that time of year again - so what are the alternative rides for this Sunday?
1. Suck it up and ride to Waterfall
2. La Pa
3. West head
4. Eastern Hills
5. Sleep in
I'd be keen for La Pa with Mons Ave on the way back. Maybe the container terminal as well.

Hi Tim,
Mind if I start a new thread? It's a different date this year.
